A mother of one was excited to discover she was pregnant again. She wanted an at-home water birth, but things didn't work out as planned, and a big surprise was coming!

Lyndsey Altice didn't have an easy pregnancy. The Tacoma, Washington mother experienced terrible morning sickness and a month of severe migraines.

No healthcare professionals, including her chiropractor, could alleviate her pain, but she pushed through, aware that the birth of her child would be worth it. She had no idea what was waiting around the corner.

She Wanted a Home Birth

Altice wanted a water birth as she had with her first child. Consequently, she never did any ultrasounds and kept track of the baby using other means, including the Doppler, a heartbeat monitor.

Toward the end of her pregnancy, Altice's midwife thought the baby was breech. The mom immediately went to her chiropractor for assistance because she needed her baby to change positions if a homebirth was possible.

A second ultrasound revealed that the infant had moved, and on July 12, 2019, the mother's water broke. Altice's midwife gave 16 hours for active labor to begin—or else the home birth would be dropped.

To Altice's surprise, the hospital had a giant birthing bathtub. When the medical assistants monitored the unborn baby's heartbeat, nothing gave away the big shock that was coming.

Many Little Miracles

Eventually, the mother went into the hospital on July 13. Thirty hours after her water ruptured, Altice had her first contraction. Her sister miraculously made it to the hospital in time, which meant the world to the mother. She expressed:

"I really needed her, she felt she needed to be here."

By a twist of fate, the kind nurse who was present when Altice got stitches following her son's home birth two years before was in the hospital when she arrived. It was a different medical facility 40 minutes away, and her presence comforted Altice.

The Shocking Double Birth

To Altice's surprise, the hospital had a giant birthing bathtub. When the medical assistants monitored the unborn baby's heartbeat, nothing gave away the big shock that was coming.

Altice's contractions didn't take long to intensify, and by early afternoon, she got into the birthing bathtub. A tiny baby girl was born after two pushes, but the mother wasn't finished yet.

She had another significant contraction, and two minutes later, another baby girl was born. The mother was in disbelief, adding:

"I was just in shock, the staff was shocked and I wish I had someone taking pictures of my husband because I’m blind and couldn’t see his expression."

It Was Meant to Be

The mother had a "Surprise! You just had twins!" experience. The likelihood of a second baby hiding in the womb almost never happens, but Altice wouldn't change the events for anything.

Her precious girls, Ada Maze and Billie June were healthy and passed their medical assessments with flying colors. They didn't have to spend any time in the intensive care unit, and an added surprise was their weight and height were the same.

The beautiful experience was life-changing for Altice, who added that she wasn't even upset she couldn't have a home birth. She knows everything worked out perfectly and was thrilled with her unexpected extra blessing.
