As a bride prepared to walk down the aisle with her stepfather, a man approached them and asked them to stop. "I will walk her down the aisle," he said. "But who are you?" the young bride asked.

While sitting at the dinner table with her half-siblings and stepfather, Grace wanted to enjoy every moment of her pre-marriage life. She was the eldest of her siblings and had always looked after them since her mother had passed away.

Only a week was left until Grace would marry the love of her life. Since she wanted everything to be perfect on her big day, she had planned all of it in detail; except who would walk her down the aisle.

Grace began thinking about her past while having dinner. She had never seen her biological father but had only heard her mother tell her that he had gone missing soon after Grace's mother told him she was pregnant.

When Grace was still a child, her mother married her stepfather, Arthur, and the two began living with him. However, Grace didn't like Arthur in the beginning. She even refused to call him "Daddy."

Despite Grace refusing to acknowledge his efforts, Arthur never stopped showering his stepdaughter with love. He always cared for her and gave her everything she needed.

Grace lost her mother a few years ago, and since then, Arthur had tried his best to ensure she never felt alone. He always stood by her side, and thinking about his selfless affection made Grace realize he should walk her down the aisle.

Grace was in the preparation room with Arthur and was telling him how to hold her hand while walking when suddenly, a man interrupted their conversation.

"Hey, Arthur!" Grace said, "I have a great idea for my wedding." Arthur looked at her with a raised eyebrow since she had never initiated a conversation with him, especially at the dinner table.

"Would you mind if I asked you to walk me down the aisle?" Grace looked into her stepfather's eyes. "Since Mom isn't here, I thought you could―"

"Yes, why not!" Arthur interrupted. "I would be more than happy to walk my little girl down the aisle."

Arthur stood up from his seat and kissed Grace on the forehead. "I am so happy you asked me to do it, Grace. All I ever wanted was for you to consider me your father."

"Thank you, Arthur," Grace said, holding his hand. "You're the only parent I have after Mom left us."

A week later, Grace was in the preparation room with Arthur and was showing him how to hold her hand while walking when suddenly, a man interrupted their conversation.

"I will walk her down the aisle," the unknown man said while looking at Arthur.

"Excuse me? Who are you?" Grace asked sternly.

"I'm George, your father, Grace," he replied.

"My father? I'm sorry, but that can't be true," Grace said. "My father left my mother decades ago. Why would he suddenly show up at my wedding?"

Grace turned around and checked her outfit one last time because it was time for her to appear before the guests. "Arthur and I are getting late," she told George.

"But he's not your father. How can he walk you down the aisle?" George objected. "I will do that, Grace. I'm your biological father."

Grace rubbed her forehead and looked at Arthur, who had no clue what George was saying. "I don't understand what's happening," she said and sat down on a chair.

"Let me explain, please. It will all make sense to you," George opened the button of his oversized black coat and sat on a chair beside Grace.

"Look, your mother didn't tell you the truth. After your birth, she never let me come near you or see you," George looked into Grace's eyes. "She forced me to lose contact with you, Grace."

"I always insisted she let me meet you, but she never agreed," he continued. "Then, she married Arthur, and I never got to talk to your mother."

"Is that true, Arthur?" Grace asked her stepfather.

"I have no idea. Your mother never liked talking about George," he replied.

"It's true, Grace. Trust me," George insisted. "If you are wondering how I learned about your wedding, let me explain."

"I found you through social media, and after seeing your photos, I realized that your boyfriend was the son of a rich businessman."

Grace's forehead creased, but she kept listening to George's story.

"When I went through your social media posts, I realized your mother had passed away a few years ago. Am I right?" George asked.

"Yes. She left us about four years ago," Grace replied.

"Well, I decided to come here after learning you were getting married and your mother wasn't around. I wanted to lead you to the altar since I am your father, Grace," George said.

Grace looked at George's torn shoes and unwashed coat before confessing her feelings. "You know I am marrying a rich businessman's son, but you don't care about my feelings, do you?" she asked.

"What do you mean, Grace?" George asked.

"If you really wanted to be my father, why didn't you contact me before?" Grace yelled. "All you want is money! You came here running as soon as you discovered who my boyfriend was."

"It's not like that, Grace. Trust me," George held Grace's hand.

"Leave me alone. I won't walk with you down the aisle," Grace pulled her hand away. "I'm not a kid anymore. I can clearly see your motive."

George felt his cheeks heat up as he looked away from Grace. "Let's go, Arthur. We're getting late," Grace said to her stepfather.

A few minutes later, Arthur was walking down the aisle holding Grace's arm while the guests in the church looked at the pair and couldn't help but smile. Then, Arthur helped Grace stand beside her future husband on the altar and whispered, "Thank you for choosing me, Grace!"

"Oh, Daddy!" Grace hugged him. "I will always choose you, no matter what."

This was the first time Arthur heard "Daddy" from Grace's mouth. Tears welled from his eyes as he witnessed his stepdaughter start a new chapter of her life.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Parents are not always those who gave birth to you. Grace soon realized that George was her biological father, but Arthur was the person who really deserved to be called a father. Knowing he never cared for her, she couldn't let George lead her to the altar.
  • Never give up on your family. Despite knowing Grace never called him "Daddy" or spent time with him, Arthur never gave up on her. He kept trying to build a relationship with her and succeeded in the end.
