I Took Care of My Disabled Husband for 9 Years, One Day I Came Home Early & Saw Him Standing – My Story

I cared for my wheelchair-bound husband day and night for nine years, only to return home early from work one day and see him standing on his feet. Much to my shock, more surprises were on their way.

My marriage was like a dream come true. When Christian and I exchanged our wedding vows and rings, we were excited to start a beautiful chapter together.

We lived the best days of our lives, and a year later, our daughter, Hope, was born. I could not have asked for a life better than this. How happy we were together and how all my friends envied me!

"Jill, you've got the best life partner on earth!" They often pulled my legs during kitty parties. Everything was perfect, smooth, name it, and I was living it.

My life was becoming better and more beautiful each day. I didn't realize how twelve years passed with Christian, Hope, and me laughing at silly jokes, throwing BBQs in our backyard, and taking turns cooking. Wow! I was so happy, and before I could find new reasons to smile, one phone call from the hospital just two days after Christian's 37th birthday turned our lives from heaven into hell...

"What? N—N—No, I think you're mistaken. My husband must be on the flight to Miami now," I shuddered at the thought of him being carried to the hospital from an accident scene near the airport.

"Mrs. Leeds, we found your number saved as 'My Wife' on his last call history. Your husband has met with an accident. Please come to the hospital."

I collapsed on the couch, unable to believe what was true and what was not.

No, Christian, I'll not let anything happen to you, I kept crying. Hope came running to me, and we rushed to the hospital. Christian said he was meeting someone in Miami regarding the new business he wanted to start. I remember he was so excited the morning he left for the airport.

My heart began pounding faster as I marched inside the ward, only to be told by the doctor that Christian had lost his ability to walk due to a spinal cord injury.

"What's happening here, and who is this??" I stormed in, tears endlessly flowing from my eyes.

"Does he know?" I asked the doctor, tears streaming down my eyes.

"Mrs. Leeds, please stay strong," was all she said, and she walked away, not answering my question.

I could not believe my perfect life had just ended. My husband, who loved running about doing things for me and our daughter, could not walk again. He could not feel his legs. He could not move. He became dependent on us for everything, and I know how heavy his heart would've felt every time he asked me to help him with even the basic things like washing up and using the restroom.

Oh, Christian, I can't bear to see you struggle like this! My heart screamed in pain.

A few days later, Christian was discharged from the hospital, and we went home. I could not muster the courage to drive, but I did it, checking on my husband in the mirror. He looked lost and in pain, and I knew he hated his wheelchair. It was a solid reminder of his disability, but he may not get a chance to get rid of it, I worried.

My life changed from the day he came back home. I decided to go back to work. I used to be a clerk in a private company and I had quit my job after marriage. But now, I needed a stable source of income to keep our household running smoothly. I didn't want Christian to feel he was a burden. He wasn't. Not at all. He was and will always be the man of our lives.

I kept looking for a suitable job for weeks. I knew Christian was upset but did not want to strain him. I then found a job in an export company and started earning money to care for my daughter and husband. I was the only breadwinner of the house. There were no more kitty parties or fun hangouts with my friends. No more shopping and movie nights. No more vacations and no more soccer. I even hid the ball as I didn't want anything to remind Christian of his disability. I only wanted him to feel normal and accept himself.

Gradually, I got held up with work, too much of it, but it calmed my heart that I was able to remain my husband's primal support.

Another five years passed. I started looking older for my age. Work had gotten the better of me. One day, I saw Christian waiting for me at the doorstep in his wheelchair. I saw him waving, and suddenly, the gesturing stopped. He retreated into the house after seeing my boss help me carry heavy grocery packages from his car trunk into the house.

I sold our car a few months ago to pay for Christian's treatment. I took a bus to my office daily, but that evening, my boss, Victor, a middle-aged man married with three kids, offered to drop me home from the store as it was past sundown.

From that day onward, I noticed a weird change in Christian.

My husband, who used to laugh even at my silliest joke that did not sound like one, refused to smile. He stopped dining with me. Our romantic talks by the patio on rainy evenings were reduced to nothing.

I knew he was not angry or suspicious. But something seemed to bother him and kept him constrained and unhappy. But what? I kept asking myself and found no clue until one fine day.

You must keep in mind, I dedicated my heart, soul, and time to keep my family strong. Christian and Hope were like little baby birds in my hands. I took care of them day and night. I forgot I had started getting older. I failed to notice my daughter was now 21 and in love with a boy. She dreamed of a destination wedding, and I had to start working more to save money for it. Her dream was my reality.

I started working overtime, and then, one day, Christian handed me his card.

"What is it, honey?" I asked him, curious.

"I borrowed some money from my friends. Take it and get things ready for our daughter's wedding," he said.

"What? You took money from your friends again?" I was dumbstruck.

Christian uttered no more and wheeled away. Then, he started bringing in more money every month, saying he had borrowed from his friends I'd never seen or known before. He'd been doing it for over two years, and sometimes, I wondered how his friends could give him so much money every month.

How will we repay them? Several doubts haunted me, but I was too busy to conclude anything. At the time, all that mattered to me was my daughter's wedding. It was her dream, and I was ready to go to any extent to make it come true.

One day, I returned home from work earlier than usual and found my husband standing in the kitchen. I rubbed my eyes and... Oh my God!

MY HUSBAND WAS STANDING ON HIS FEET!

I was shocked, and as I ran closer, I saw a beautiful young woman there.

"What's happening here, and who is this??" I stormed in, tears endlessly flowing from my eyes.

I wanted to be happy that Christian was able to stand, move, and walk. But seeing him with a young lady annoyed me. Several suspicions bombarded my mind, but my heart refused to listen.

"Christian, were you cheating on me??" I cried to him without knowing the truth he had been keeping from me.

"Honey, welcome home. Look... I'm standing! Isn't that amazing? Aren't you happy now?" Christian limped to me as if nothing had happened. As though he was clean. I was hurt, but was I the kind of wife who looked for lipstick stains and sniffed for a new perfume scent on him? No, I was not so cruel or paranoid.

"But why did you cheat on me?" I asked him, only to learn that the woman, Esther, was a rehabilitation nurse.

"She WHAT??" I was stunned.

"Honey, calm down. She's just my nurse, and she's our daughter's age. Esther is no different from Hope!"

I still needed clarification. I had no clue what was going on. That's when Christian confessed something he'd been doing behind my back all these years.

"I was crushed when I saw you were taking help from your boss," he began.

"I started sending applications to remote jobs and landed a great position to work from home. I didn't borrow any money from my friends. I worked for it, but I didn't want you to know!"

Now I realized why Christian was always occupied with his laptop all the time. Whenever I asked him, he said he was playing games. But he had worked hard to prove he was not a burden on our shoulders... that he was disabled but not incapable.

"That's when I made a promise to myself," he continued. "I wanted to lead our daughter down the aisle on my feet. I secretly worked out with my nurse every afternoon until the evening before you guys returned home from work. I wanted to surprise you both at Hope's wedding."

Endless tears flowed down my eyes as I threw myself in Christian's arms and kissed him all over his face. Esther blushed and left, respecting our private space.

Christian and I hugged for a long time, and he asked me to promise not to disclose anything to our daughter. We waited until her wedding and the big day finally arrived. Poor Hope had no idea about the sweet, tear-jerking surprise Christian had devised for her that day.

Finally, at our daughter's wedding...

The guests flocked to the church as the priest began the wedding mass. Peter, my daughter's fiancé, and the rest eagerly waited for her to appear in that dream fairytale wedding gown.

"Mom, I'll take dad from here," she painfully said, hiding her tears, as she walked behind Christian's wheelchair and started pushing it.

Then suddenly, "Sweetie, stop for a second!" Christian chimed in. I knew this would be an explosion of emotions and tears for both daughter and dad. I just took a corner and kept the tissues ready.

As Hope looked puzzled and the guests turned around, Christian rose from the wheelchair and tucked Hope's arm under his.

"Shall we walk, darling?!" he said as Hope gaped in awe. She could not fathom the biggest surprise of her life.

"DADDY?! OH MY GOD... DADDY, YOU ARE ON YOUR FEET... DADDY!!"

Hope cried out so loud that everybody was moved to tears. How could I hold my tears back? I cried in the corner until Christian called out to me and hugged us.

The priest resumed the mass, and Christian led our daughter down the aisle. It was the most precious moment of our lives. The dad who taught his daughter to take her first steps took the biggest steps with her toward her new life. I cried and soaked at least a dozen tissues, but those tears wouldn't stop flowing. Rightly said, you can never hold back tears of joy, can you?
