Nicks and Buckingham have come a long way, their work and love journey stretching back to the days before global fame. During the three-and-a-half years they spent in the band Fritz, there was an unspoken pact among the all-male members to keep their distance from Nicks, an agreement that included Buckingham, with whom she shared lead vocals.

"I think there was always something between me and Lindsey, but nobody in that band really wanted me as their girlfriend because I was just too ambitious for them," shared Nicks.

Stevie Nicks added that while her bandmates were not interested in pursuing a relationship with her, they were equally determined to ensure no one else did. Anyone in the group who grew closer to her would quickly face intense scrutiny from the others, to the point of being completely driven away.

Furthermore, despite her talent, her bandmates thought she was doing music for the attention. Nicks noted that they saw her as "just a girl singer" and struggled with the attention she received.

For a while, the bandmates upheld their pact of not dating the lone woman in the group. However, in a twist that would shape Fleetwood Mac's history, Nicks and Buckingham entered into a relationship. Their romance was already on shaky ground when they joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974.

"We were breaking up when we joined Fleetwood Mac. So we just put our relationship kind of back together, because I was smart enough to know that, if we had broken up the second month of being in Fleetwood Mac, it would have blown the whole thing," she admitted.

Nicks explained that she carefully navigated the situation, making every effort to be considerate and kind toward Buckingham, who was also unhappy. Eventually, their relationship reached a natural conclusion, and both recognized that it was time to end things.

"And the band was solid, by that time, so I could walk away knowing that he was safe. And that the band was safe. And that we could work it out," she added.

Tensions resurfaced in 2018 when Buckingham was dismissed from Fleetwood Mac, then consisting of himself, Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, and Christine and John McVie. The split followed a disagreement after a performance at MusiCares.

Some people speculated that Buckingham's conduct at the event caused the fallout. However, Buckingham has maintained that his request for three months to promote his solo album before the group's tour was the real issue.

Whatever the reason, Lindsey Buckingham attributed his removal from the group to Nicks, insisting that she was responsible for the decision. "Stevie basically gave the band an ultimatum that either I had to go or she would go. It would be like [Mick] Jagger saying, 'Well, either Keith [Richards] has to go or I'm going to go,'" he opened up.

Nicks disputed the guitarist's version of events regarding his departure, describing it as a revisionist account. She emphasized that she did not demand his firing, instead choosing to step away from the band. Nicks said she removed herself from a situation she found detrimental to her well-being.
