Becky's husband, Frank, never supported her dreams and wanted her to be a stay-at-home mother. One day, everything changed for Frank when the only person he could turn to for help was Becky.

Becky met Frank when she had just finished her marketing degree at college. Frank played college football at the time and was hoping to play professionally. Unfortunately, Frank's football dream didn't work out, and he ended up working as a mechanic in his father's old shop.

Even though Frank was a bit rough around the edges, he also had a softer side which he only showed his loved ones. But Becky also knew Frank was old-fashioned and stuck in his ways. Becky came from a poor background but always knew how to hustle for a buck.

She paid her way through college by selling homemade cakes and biscuits on campus. She always dreamed of opening her own bakery franchise. "I want to call it BBs. It stands for Becky Bakes," Becky told Frank. At first, he had no problem with the idea and was also a fan of Becky's cakes.

Everything changed when Becky fell pregnant with a baby girl. She had to pause her plans during her pregnancy and relied on Frank to be the breadwinner. After Becky gave birth to a beautiful girl named Lisa, they decided to have a son named Joey. After her maternity leave was over, Becky decided to chase her dreams again.

"It looks like Frank has a lung infection from inhaling fumes on the job. There is a treatment for it, but your medical insurance doesn't cover it."

She taught herself how to create a business plan and apply for funding to get off the ground. She presented her idea to Frank, but he responded rudely. "I already work hard to provide for you, Lisa and Joey. If you're going to be busy, then how would this even work?" He asked angrily.

"We can work together as a team so we can do our part equally," she replied. "I hate these feminist things! Who's going to look after the kids and clean the house? The kitchen is a woman's office!" he replied. Becky was left disappointed. All she wanted was to have the support of her husband and try something new.

She always knew that her husband was quite conservative, but she just wanted to make some extra money to provide for her children. I can still make this work, Becky thought. Secretly, she began selling baking and selling cakes to some of their neighbors while Frank was at work.

She began to make healthy profits and opened a savings account. Her neighbor, Julia, insisted that she start a legitimate business and even offered to help her bring in clients. "Well, unfortunately, Frank sees me more of a stay-at-home mom, so I'm not sure he'd be happy with that," Becky admitted to Julia.

"What is this? The 1940s? Trust me, Becky, those will sell like hotcakes. Excuse the pun," Julia replied.

Becky knew that Julia was right. As a family, Becky, Frank, and the kids were already living cheque-to-cheque. Frank didn't want to admit it, but the extra money would help the situation.

One day, Becky received a call from Frank's dad, Leon. "Becky, Frank's in the hospital. He was coughing and struggling to breathe earlier. Come as soon as you can," Leon told her. Becky took the kids and went to see Frank at the hospital immediately. Frank was okay but was struggling to breathe properly.

Struggling to speak clearly, Frank told Becky, "I'll figure something out." The doctor then asked to speak with Becky privately as she was listed as Frank's next of kin.

"It looks like Frank has a lung infection from inhaling fumes on the job. There is a treatment for it, but your medical insurance doesn't cover it. We can keep him here for observation for a while if you want to try and arrange funds," the doctor told Becky.

Becky was left highly stressed. Lisa would be starting school soon, and without Frank earning money, the family would struggle to pay for his treatment and the children's needs.

Becky also didn't want Frank to take out unnecessary loans. She decided to do what she does best, bake. After getting home, she called Julia straight away.

"I was wondering if I could take you up on your offer of helping to get my baking business started," Becky said.

"It's funny that you should ask. My best friend from high school is getting married and just told me she's looking for someone to make a wedding cake for her," Julia said. Becky took the job and got to work in the kitchen straight away. She even had a helping hand from Lisa.

That weekend, Becky presented her cake, which was such a massive hit with the newlyweds that they paid her a bonus for her work. Between the money from the wedding cake and the cash she had saved by selling cakes to her neighbors, Becky had enough to pay for Frank's treatment.

She took the kids to the hospital to deliver the news to Frank, who was deeply moved when he heard what Becky had done for him. "I'm sorry that I didn't believe in you. I promise I'll never shut down your dreams again," Frank told her as he began to cry.

"You know, I hate to say I told you so, so I'll say this instead. That's what these "feminist things" are for," Becky replied.

A month later, Frank completed his treatment and returned home. Becky asked if he would return to his dad's shop now that his health had improved.

"If I do that, I'll probably end up at the doctor in another month. Maybe I'll stay home, watch the kids and do a little cleaning. We both know you have a business to run," Frank said while smiling from ear to ear.

With a new perspective, Frank was more than happy to support his wife's dreams. It was those same dreams that saved his life.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Be open to change. Frank judged Becky's abilities to provide for their family just because of his conservative upbringing and the fact that she is a woman. In the end, Becky saves his life by pursuing her dreams.
  • Always believe in yourself. Even when her own husband doubted her, Becky made sure to chase her own ambitions, and in the end, she became the main breadwinner.
