Shania Twain has spent decades in the spotlight, but some of the most meaningful chapters of her life have unfolded far away from the stage. While fans know her as one of country music's biggest stars, her journey to finding lasting love took an unexpected path that few could have predicted.

Long before her personal life made headlines, Twain's professional partnership with music producer Robert "Mutt" Lange helped launch her into global superstardom.

According to The Guardian, after releasing her first album, Twain began working with Lange, and together they created the sound that would make her one of country-pop's biggest crossover stars.

Before the Heartbreak, Twain and Lange Had a Career-Defining Partnership

Twain later reflected on how much influence he had on her music while making it clear that her public image came from her own vision.

"Extremely influential on the music. As a producer, he is very much a director as well; very hands-on and very talented. So, he was driving the direction of the sound. He didn't drive the direction of my voice and never tried to change me."

She continued, "That was me, not Mutt. He was never part of the creative development in that sense. He drove the instrument choices, the sound, the groove. He was a bass player as a musician, and he was very driven by the rhythm."

Lange, who was born in Mufulira, Zambia, on November 11, 1948, is also known for his work on films including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Don Juan DeMarco, and The Three Musketeers, according to his IMDb profile.

Twain's Marriage That Ended in One of Country Music's Biggest Shocks

Twain and Lange were married for 14 years and welcomed their son, Eja D'Angelo, before announcing their separation in 2008. A PEOPLE report at the time said multiple sources alleged that Lange had become involved with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, who had worked for the couple and whom Twain considered one of her closest friends.

The outlet reported that Marie-Anne's husband was Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud.

Lange denied that an affair caused the breakup, telling PEOPLE that the split was "absolutely not the reason [for the breakup]… It's literally just a growing apart, that's all." He also denied being in a relationship with Marie-Anne.

How Twain Learned the Truth About the Affair

Years later, Twain revealed that Thiébaud himself told her what had happened. Speaking during a 2011 interview on The Marilyn Denis Show, Twain recalled first sensing that something was wrong before eventually learning the truth.

"Fred actually uh told me about it himself directly. Although I'd suspected not an affair, but I'd suspected something was sus you know, that something was suspicious." She added, "Something was off, and I was trying to get to the bottom of it. I did speak to Mary Ann a lot about it."

Twain explained that Thiébaud eventually reached out and asked to meet her in person rather than discuss the matter over the phone. "Fred reached out to me, and he said, you know, I just would like to speak to you in person about Mary Ann, and I don't want to explain it over the phone. So, he came over and explained everything, and that was it, really."

She explained that the two barely knew one another beyond being married to each other's friends. "Fred and I had a very formal relationship. We didn't know each other one-on-one very well at all. He was my friend's husband, and that was it."

When he finally told her the truth in person, she initially refused to accept it. "No, I didn't. I didn't believe him at all. I thought he was — I said, 'Oh, you're, you know, you're crazy. I mean, you know, you're exaggerating, or you're being dramatic.'"

She said she tried to rationalize what she had been told instead of accepting it. "I'm sure they were, you know, they've just been together a lot lately because she need[s] maybe she needs support. I don't know. I made up every excuse you can imagine."

But Thiébaud stood by what he had told her. "Well, you know, uh, I've got as much proof as I need to be sure, and if you're not going to believe me, then I'll just have to, you know, leave you with that."

Twain Later Admitted Just How Dark That Period Became

The emotional fallout affected nearly every part of Twain's life. According to The Guardian, Twain later revealed in her memoir From This Moment On that there had been times when "she wanted to die."

In the same 2011 television interview, she also explained that caring for her son, Eja, helped keep her grounded during her darkest moments as she worked through the pain and slowly rebuilt her life.

How Shared Heartbreak Turned Into Lasting Love For Twain and Thiébaud

What began as mutual support gradually became something neither of them expected. According to PEOPLE, after both of their marriages collapsed, Thiébaud became a source of comfort for both Twain and her son.

In a letter announcing their engagement in December 2010, Twain wrote:

"I’m in love! Frédéric Nicolas Thiébaud has been a true gift to me as a compassionate, understanding friend and over time, an amazing love has blossomed from this precious friendship."

She also said she had found a "renewed faith in love and commitment." Later, while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Twain explained how their relationship developed. As detailed in PEOPLE's relationship timeline, she said, "We slowly became very, very good friends." She added:

"We had many months of just trying to make sense of everything, holding each other up. It was a very difficult time emotionally for both of us."

Twain continued, "I would say he was probably stronger than I was. He was a tremendous support — we were a support to each other — and really found something beautiful in the end and unexpected."

The Wedding That Marked a New Beginning

Just one month after announcing their engagement, Twain and Thiébaud married on New Year's Day 2011 during a sunset ceremony in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

According to Rolling Stone, the intimate ceremony was attended by around 40 family members and close friends, and Twain's son, Eja, walked her down the aisle.

A PEOPLE report on the couple’s relationship timeline quoted one bridesmaid as saying, "After [the officiant] said, 'You can now kiss the bride,' Fred picked her up and kissed her. He was just jumping for joy. It was tearful, beautiful."

Thiébaud Revealed How He Won Twain's Heart

Just a few months after their wedding, Thiébaud also reflected on the unexpected romance that grew out of one of the hardest periods of both their lives.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the Swiss businessman said he expressed his feelings through thoughtful surprises, including flying Twain to a Swiss glacier and renting out an entire movie theater so they could enjoy dinner together.

"To express my love, words are not enough," he said. Thiébaud added, "I'm more in love with her every day. What happened between us really came as a complete surprise. We never, ever expected anything like this. It's just really a beautiful love story."

Who Is Frédéric Thiébaud?

Unlike his famous wife, Thiébaud has largely remained outside the entertainment spotlight. According to his LinkedIn profile, the Swiss businessman earned a degree in economics in Geneva before working on international projects for Nestlé and later leading operations for Nestlé Nespresso across multiple regions worldwide.

Since 2010, he has operated his own consultancy and business management companies while remaining active in finance, real estate, and entertainment projects. Country Living previously reported that the couple split their time between the Bahamas and Switzerland.

Why Twain Says Thiébaud Is Her 'Forever True Love'

As the years passed, Twain continued speaking openly about the role Thiébaud plays in her life. Speaking in 2012, she said, "I cannot live without him. I need that support. I just need what we have. It grounds me every day and reminds me that there are a lot of important things going on in the world. He keeps it all in perspective."

According to The Boot, Twain also credited her husband with helping keep her calm ahead of the launch of her Las Vegas residency. Most recently, Twain reflected on their marriage during a 2026 interview with PEOPLE, calling Thiébaud her "forever true love."

"This is the love I'm going to grow old with," she said. Twain added, "I'm sure we'll always have romance, but there's a depth and a gratitude that I have about having this love."

She also reflected on how differently life might have unfolded had they met years earlier, saying, "And if I [had] met Fred as a teenager, I do believe that he would have been my lifelong love even from then. It just takes sometimes years to find that person."

She also praised his communication skills, adding:

"He's really good at reminding both of us that we have to keep communication open."

While Twain described herself as a good communicator, she admitted she'd often rather "meditate over the issue, take a walk or be alone with my guitar" when facing a marital disagreement. She said Thiébaud, however, prefers to work through problems together.

"Fred wants to talk about it. He wants to talk it through, and he wants to fix it," she said. "And that's the best advice. I mean, he's not wrong."

Rare Glimpses of Twain and Her Son Sparked Fan Reactions

While Twain rarely shares personal family moments, one Instagram post from May 2023 quickly caught fans' attention. Sharing a photo from the Hollywood Bowl, she wrote, "Nothing better than love & support from friends at the @hollywoodbowl ❤️❤️❤️ #QueenOfMeTour."

The gallery featured a smiling photo of Shania Twain and Thiébaud together with some other people, but eagle-eyed fans were especially excited by something else. The same post also included a rare group photo featuring her son, Eja, who has largely stayed out of the public eye despite pursuing music as an artist whose Instagram describes his style as "fantasy soul punk alt rock."
