A birthday trip turned tragic after influencer Ashlee Jenae died suddenly in Zanzibar. As her family searches for answers, conflicting accounts, missing details, and a chilling timeline are raising serious concerns.

What started as a milestone birthday celebration quickly turned into a tragedy no one saw coming. And as new details emerge, the story only grows more unsettling.

A Dream Getaway Filled With Love and Big Plans
Ashly Robinson — known online as Ashlee Jenae — was living what many would call a dream. According to her family's official statement uploaded on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Robinson had traveled to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar on April 5, 2026, to celebrate her 31st birthday, embarking on a trip filled with "beauty, love, and wildlife."
During a safari, that dream reached a new high. Her boyfriend, Joe McCann, proposed — an unforgettable moment that, as her family shared, marked "the start of a future she was so excited to build."

"Ashly Robinson, was on what should have been one of the happiest trips of her life, a birthday celebration in Zanzibar, Africa. Ashly's birthday was April 5th, she just turned 31. Surrounded by beauty, love, and wildlife, she became engaged during a safari, an unforgettable moment that marked the start of a future she was so excited to build," the statement read.
The couple stayed at the upscale Zuri Zanzibar, where the celebration continued in a private villa. "She had just gotten engaged to the love of her life, her happiness was evident, and she had many good things ahead of her," the family said, as quoted in a report.

From Celebration to Catastrophe
Then, suddenly, everything changed. According to the deceased's family's statement on Instagram, Robinson was found unconscious in her villa and rushed to a local hospital.
She was pronounced dead just hours later. Her family said in their statement, "But just days later [...] Ashly was found unconscious in her villa and was rushed to a local hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later."
The loss, they added, felt surreal — "the suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home" making the tragedy even more overwhelming:
"Nothing about this loss feels real. One moment she was celebrating love and life in truly Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone. The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family."

A fundraiser created by her parents echoed that pain, calling the trip "our family's worst nightmare" and noting the challenges of navigating an investigation from thousands of miles away. "What was meant to be a dream became our family's worst nightmare."
"This fund is in response to those asking how to help and will support travel costs, arrangements, and unexpected expenses during this time. Thank you for standing with our family," the campaign added.
What Authorities Say Happened
As grief spread online, authorities in Zanzibar began piecing together their version of events. According to local police reports, Robinson allegedly fainted after inhaling fumes from a clothing item inside a wardrobe.
The North Unguja Regional Police Commander, Benedict Mapujira, in an interview, said the incident occurred on April 9, 2026, and that she had been "ill" prior to the event.

"The woman had been ill, her boyfriend said she came here as a tourist. She was still alive when police were informed. She was taken to hospital, where she passed away the following day (Friday, April 10)," he said.
Police also noted that Robinson and her boyfriend McCann, were staying in separate rooms. "As per the rules, they were not legally married, and therefore hotel management decided to separate them, giving the woman her own room and the man his own," Mapujira explained.
Authorities emphasized that, based on initial findings, there was no basis to accuse McCann, though he continues to be questioned. "We cannot take legal action or accuse him under these circumstances," the regional police commander said.
A Second Narrative Emerges
But another account soon surfaced — and it painted a different picture. According to a BBC report, the Zanzibar police told the publication that Robinson had attempted to take her own life. But McCann has not commented on this. Police also confirmed that McCann's passport has been withheld and that he is cooperating as a witness. No arrests have been made.
The same report revealed that the couple had a "misunderstanding" before the incident — one that reportedly led hotel management to place them in separate rooms. However, in a statement to the BBC, the hotel did not confirm details of the case provided by police.
Meanwhile, Robinson's parents described her as "a light" and "a beautiful person" who was "supposed to be happy."
"Everything that we knew was that she was supposed to be happy. She was engaged, she celebrated her birthday thereafter, and then she's just gone," her mother, Yolanda Endres, told CBS News. "We are confused about how that could change so drastically."
A Timeline That Doesn't Sit Right
Then came the detail that left her family deeply unsettled. In an interview with CBS News, Robinson's parents revealed they first learned something was wrong through McCann — but the timing raised concerns.
"I asked him when it happened and where it happened, and he told me that something had occurred 11 hours prior to when he was reaching out to me," Endres said in the CBS News interview.

Eleven hours had passed before they were informed. And then, communication stopped. Robinson's parents learned of her death from the hotel, rather than from their daughter's fiancé.
"The fiancé did not reach out to us at all. We found out from the hotel," her father, Harry Robinson, said in the same CBS News interview. "That's devastating when your daughter's halfway around the world. We just wanted to know where she was at, who she was with, and that she was OK. Just give us something."
That moment — learning of her death from hotel staff rather than her fiancé — has become one of the most troubling aspects of the case.
A Family Left With Questions, Not Answers
Robinson's parents say the pieces still don't fit together. "She's always smiling. She loved being in front of the camera," her father said in the same interview. "Nothing about it makes sense. It just doesn't add up."
Her mother echoed that confusion.
"They were in a gorgeous place in Africa and happy," Endres told CBS News. "Everything that we knew was that she was supposed to be happy. She was engaged, she celebrated her birthday thereafter, and then she's just gone."
When asked directly whether they believe McCann was involved, Endres told CBS News, "We don't know what went on."

Public Reaction and Growing Concern
As the investigation continues, public reaction has been intense. Some online readers have questioned the explanation involving fumes, while others point to the timing — just days after an engagement — as unusual.
A close friend of the deceased, Savannah Britt, also raised concerns. "It is worrying that an American woman has died in a foreign country days after getting engaged and before her first wedding anniversary plans," Britt said, as quoted in the Mwananchi report.
Still, the family has urged caution, asking that any information not directly provided by them be treated as unverified in their Instagram statement. "We respectfully ask that any information not directly provided by our family be treated as unverified and not considered factual at this time."
An Investigation Still Unfolding
Authorities say the case remains under investigation, with medical reports still pending. Robinson's family says they are cooperating fully.
"At this time, there is an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ashly’s suspicious passing. Although we have many questions, we are placing our trust in the officials in Zanzibar and are working closely with them as we seek clarity and answers."
They also continue to push for transparency, including access to surveillance footage. "There's cameras everywhere at a resort and that will match the timeline," the deceased's father said in the CBS News interview. "Just do the investigation and let us know."
For now, the story remains filled with gaps. A joyful beginning. A devastating ending. And a timeline that leaves behind more questions than answers. As her family waits, one truth lingers — this mystery is far from over.
