Liza Minnelli Did Not Want Children Although She Tried to Conceive

After Liza Minnelli unsuccessfully tried to have children, the famous actress and singer admitted that she regretted not becoming a mother. However, she later realized she was "meant to do something else" with her life.

Minnelli has enjoyed years in Hollywood as an award-winning singer, dancer, choreographer, and actress. And as accomplished as she is, Minnelli revealed that for a moment in time, she was saddened by the fact that she never became a mother.

It is unclear during which of her marriages Minnelli tried to have a child as she has been married multiple times. However, now Minnelli lives a fulfilled life by helping other children in need.

Liza Minnelli Shunned Marriages after Four Failed Unions

Minnelli said "I do" for the first time on March 3, 1967, to Peter Allen. And when her first marriage ended on June 24, 1974, she married for the second time on September 15 of that same year to Jack Haley Jr.

Haley and Minnelli's marriage lasted five years before they went their separate ways in April 1979. By December 1979, Minnelli was walked down the aisle for the third time and married Mark Gero. However, they divorced in January 1992.

Minnelli gave marriage one last shot in 2002 when she and David Gest tied the knot on March 16, but by April 2007, their marriage ended as well. In 2012, Minnelli revealed that she was done with marriage and said:

"If you even hear I'm getting married, hit me over the head and take me outta there!"

She explained that, in her experience, marriages never worked. She tried to accommodate her ex-husbands because she loved them, but the actress explained that marriage was a dying concept anyway.

Although her relationships did not last, Minnelli shared that she had married "wonderful people" and remained on good terms with all of them. And while marriage was no longer in the cards for her, Minnelli said she wouldn't mind a whirlwind romance with an older man and a younger guy.

Minnelli said that a handsome doctor with a lot of money was what she was looking for, as well as a 19-year-old who she jokingly said she would forget his name from time to time.

Liza Minnelli Couldn't Have Children but Said She's Meant for Something Else

In 2008, Minnelli revealed that she had gotten a hiatal hernia while she was pregnant. Medical professionals tried to help save her baby, but she suffered a miscarriage and was left with pain every time she sang or ate.

Years prior, the "New York, New York" actress admitted that she regretted not becoming a mother after experiencing three miscarriages.

But over the years, Minnelli did not allow her personal experience with conceiving to stop her from helping other children in need. The singer worked with children with brain damage and AIDS globally and explained:

"That's how I've rationalized [not having kids]. I was meant to do something else."

Liza Minnelli Made the Headlines after Appearing at the Oscars in a Wheelchair

As Liza Minnelli has seldom made public appearances over the years, she sparked a discussion when she presented at the 2022 Oscars in a wheelchair.

Michael Feinstein, a singer and a close friend of Minnelli, said she only agreed to present at the Oscars if she was given the director's chair due to her back problems.

She did not want to worry fans if they saw her limping out on stage, but it is unclear whether the original plan was for Minnelli to be wheeled onto the stage and then transferred into the director's chair or if she was meant to walk with aid to the chair.

However, Feinstein said a stage manager notified Minnelli that she would be in a wheelchair and not in a director's chair moments before she was due to go on stage and present the best picture award with Lady Gaga. Feinstein added:

"She was nervous, and it made her look like she was out of it. Can you imagine being suddenly forced to be seen by millions of people the way you don't want to be seen? That's what happened to her."

According to The Guardian, Oscars organizers were "shaken" following Will Smith and Chris Rock's infamous altercation on the award show stage and changed the plan with Minnelli at a moment's notice.

However, the audience and critics praised Minnelli and Lady Gaga for providing a calming close to the award show. According to Minnelli's publicist, Lady Gaga requested to share the stage with Minnelli as the pair have been friends for over a decade.

Liza Minnelli Now Lives Privately after Selling Her Luxurious Home & Leaving Her Flashy Life Behind

After "Cabaret" turned her into a superstar, Liza Minnelli spent a large portion of her life in the public eye. So, in 2015, she sold her home in the Upper East Side of New York, worth over $ 8 million, and moved to the West Coast for some privacy. Her publicist said:

"Liza is living her best life, not having to be in front of the cameras. She's been under tremendous pressure her entire life to perform for audiences. The past couple of years have allowed her to relax and enjoy another phase of her life."

However, he was one of many people close to Minnelli who worried about her health and well-being when it was revealed she had lost contact with many people in her life following her move.

But Minnelli appeared on CBS with Feinstein and said she was in good hands in his care. The pair met in 1980 in a bar in New York City and have been inseparable ever since.

And although her health took a turn for the worst over the years, Liza Minnelli looked like her usual fabulous self in a picture alongside Jane Seymour and Jennifer Coolidge in early December.
