Mom Wakes up from Coma Hearing Her Recently Mute Son Sing – Story of the Day
Victoria worried about her son, Ed, who had randomly stopped talking years ago. However, when Victoria found herself in a coma after an accident, her son's voice would save her life.
Victoria worried greatly about her son, Ed. He had completely stopped talking about two years ago. The doctors were convinced that it wasn't anything physical, but rather it was psychological.
Since then, Victoria has come to accept Ed's condition as their new normal. She tried taking him to therapy, but he still wouldn't speak. One day, Victoria was coming back from work and got into an accident.

Victoria went into a coma, and her family was greatly saddened by her condition. Victoria's husband, Oliver, struggled to keep their family strong and hopeful. Things were already difficult with Ed not speaking, but now Victoria was in a coma.
The doctors weren't sure what it would take to bring Victoria out of the coma. They just suggested that the family all talk to Victoria whenever they got the chance. They believed that Victoria hearing their voices might trigger something that could bring her back to consciousness.
"Doctor! She moved her hand! She moved her hand. I saw it!" Oliver yelled.

Over the next number of weeks, Victoria's family would visit her and talk to her, although she never responded. Victoria's doctors said that even though Victoria was not conscious, her brain was working, and talking with her family could help her get over her condition as soon as possible.
While the family would come to talk to her every day, her condition did not improve. Ed used to sit with Victoria for hours, squeezing her and crying at her bedside. Ed missed his mother dearly, and he prayed for her to get better each day.
One day when Oliver and Ed were visiting Victoria, Oliver left the room to answer a call from work, leaving Ed and Victoria alone. In desperation, Ed cleared his throat and tried something he hadn't done for the longest time.
With tears in his eyes, he softly sang one of the nursery rhymes his mother used to sing him as a child.

Then, suddenly, Ed felt a light squeeze in his palm.
Victoria began to respond, gripping Ed's hand tighter. Oliver stepped in to see Victoria's hand movement and couldn't believe what he was witnessing. He instantly rushed out of the room, looking for the doctor.
"I had struggled to find something to say anymore. I didn't think my voice was of any further service, so I guess I kind of shut down."
"Doctor! She moved her hand! She moved her hand. I saw it!" Oliver yelled.
The doctor finally came in to check on Victoria, and she was indeed coming out of her coma. Oliver was utterly in awe. Not only had his son finally spoken after all of these years, but his first time speaking had brought his mother out of the coma.

The doctors were excited about Victoria's recovery. They said they had never seen a case quite like hers. Over the next couple of days, Victoria began to recover and regain her speech. She was glad to see her family and missed them dearly.
"Thank you for all the love you gave me. Thank you for singing to me, Ed. When I heard you sing, I had this unrelenting desire to burst into tears of joy and hug my baby boy."
"You woke me up with your voice, Ed. Your beautiful sweet voice, I've missed it so much," Victoria said in tears.
"I had struggled to find something to say anymore. I didn't think my voice was of any further service, so I guess I kind of shut down. It doesn't really make sense. But when I saw you on that bed, I figured if there was any time to be heard, it was then," Ed explained, hugging his mother.

And so Ed started speaking again. He started going to therapy which helped him uncover some of the things that had pushed him to become silent. Ed had had trouble with the feeling of rejection and had begun to see his voice as not having a place in the world.
The deeper Ed got into therapy, the more he was able to uncover some of the reasons for his recent episode. Oliver, Victoria, and Ed also started to have family therapy sessions that helped them get closer as a family.
They began to understand each other in more depth, and it allowed them to get closer. Ed's therapy also helped him in school. He wasn't talking or engaging at school, which made him lose friends and struggle in his studies.

Victoria understood that her condition had brought a lot of pain to her loved ones. But she was grateful that even though her coma was a struggle for all of them, in the end, it brought them closer as a family.
What can we learn from this story?
- Don't lose hope. Victoria's coma and Ed's silence both seemed like hopeless situations. However, both parties kept their hope alive when necessary, and they were able to rise above the circumstances.
- Actions have consequences. While we don't know the exact reasons for Ed's silence, we can see how his therapy pointed to a traumatic experience that led to him disengaging with society. We all do things that can impact each other negatively or positively.
