Kevin Costner, the face of John Dutton from the show "Yellowstone," turns 68 today. Over the years, he has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the acting community. Kevin was even awarded an Oscar for his directing skills, and besides "Yellowstone," he starred in many critically acclaimed films.
Besides being an A-list actor, Kevin also excels as a family man. Throughout his life, he married twice, first to Cindy Silva, with whom he shares Anni Costner, Lily Costner, and Joe Costner. Later, he dated Bridget Rooney, and the pair had a son together named Liam Costner.

In 2004, Kevin married his second and current wife, Christine Baumgartner. Kevin and Christine share three children of their own, Cayden Wyatt, Logan Hayes, and Grace Avery. Although he's the proudest dad, and he adores all seven of his kids, the road to fatherhood was not without obstacles.
By being involved in their lives and building comfortable relationships, he believes parents can impart crucial life lessons to their kids.
After things didn't work out with his first wife, the actor had some reservations about having more children. He and Cindy divorced in 1994, and he had a relatively brief relationship afterward, which didn't work out either. By the time he met Christine, Kevin was approaching his 50s, and he wasn't sure about having more kids.

At the time, Kevin had doubts about himself and his parenting abilities. His age made things even worse, since he didn't know whether he would be a good dad. That said, Christine did want children, and if Kevin didn't agree to have kids, things might not have worked between them. He remembered:
"[One day] I woke up and thought, 'Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child?' That's all it took."
Luckily the actor came to his senses, and everything turned out all right in the end. Christine was overjoyed when he proposed and told her he would have children with her, and the two said their vows in 2004.

Kevin and Christine welcomed their first child, Cayden, in 2007, when the actor was 52. By the time Caydon came along, Kevin had worked out most of his anxiety over having more kids, and all he wanted was to be as good a dad as possible.
What Kind of Father Is Kevin Costner in Real Life?
Kevin adjusted to the role of father easily, despite his earlier misgivings. As soon as his kids came along, he realized he enjoyed being a dad, and he ensured that his three young ones were his priority.
That said, with Kevin's busy schedule working as an actor, musician, and director, it's easy to imagine he doesn't get much time for his family. He noted that any time he has when he's not working, he spends with his beloved family.
He shared his approach to parenting, saying it's essential to spend time with your kids. By being involved in their lives and building comfortable relationships, he believes parents can impart crucial life lessons to their kids.

Despite his fame and acclaim, Kevin shared that his kids are just like any other "normal" child. He laughingly said he can tell when they try to circumvent their mom's authority by coming to him whenever she says no to something.
These days, Kevin's highly comfortable living a family-oriented life. He loves spending time with his kids, and being a dad has helped him develop his view of the world and of his role in it. He shared candidly:
"I work as a provider. I'm a father and I'm a husband, but the world doesn't revolve around me."
Kevin and Christine said they generally share the parental duties. Although Kevin admits he isn't the greatest cook in the world, he has been mastering breakfast. And while he handles the morning meals, Christine takes responsibility for their children's education. She ensures Cayden, Hayes, and Grace's homeschooling goes well.
