'The Green Mile' Guard David Morse Sacrificed Career for Wife of 40 Years & Their 3 Kids Including Twins

Actor David Morse who played Brutus' Brutal' Howell in the world-famous classic "The Green Mile," is not like his character in real life.

That may be so, but the Massachusetts native had a stellar performance in the 1999 film and admitted that the writing for the production touched everyone involved.

"That script was a script that everyone who read it wanted to be a part of. Everybody who read it wept; it was just wonderfully moving," said Morse. He was the second individual to be cast in the movie and received the script from the director, Frank Darabont.

Morse revealed that during their first interaction, Darabont expressed concerns about him wishing to "improvise" for the script, but he assured him that it would not come to that because that was not his intention. Once he got the script, he did not hesitate to join the team.

Morse worked as a stage performer for ten decades before breaking into the film industry. He made a name for himself as a renowned supporting character actor and second lead.

The "St. Elsewhere" alum studied acting at the William Esper studio and began his acting career in 1971, having appeared in more than 30 productions between 1971 to 1977. The award-winning star made his big screen debut in 1980 in the movie, "Inside Moves."

Besides acting, Morse is a family man married to actress Susan Wheeler Duff. The couple wed in 1982 and have been married for 40 years. They welcomed three kids, two twin sons, and a daughter.

In 1994, a Northridge earthquake destroyed Morse's home in Sherman Oaks. After that, he moved from Los Angeles to Philadelphia with his wife and kids. He now lives in Duff's hometown.

Apart from being known as Morse's wife and the mother of his children, Duff is known for films including 1985's "The Twilight Zone," 1986's "Miracles" and "Personal Foul" (1987).

What Does Morse Say about His Wife after 40 Years of Marriage?

In December 2022, Morse spoke lovingly of his beloved spouse of four decades. "My wife is many things," said the singer. He praised Duff's writing skills, mentioned that she loves reading, is devoted to their brood, is an outstanding actor, and his "love" for the past four decades. Morse added:

"Any day with Susan is a cultural essential."

Not only does Morse adore his wife, but he also listens to her. In 1997, he had been part of a Broadway production and had to be "away from home for six months." Duff stayed home with their young kids Sam and Ben, then five, and Eliza, then eight.

Although the father of three enjoyed being part of the show, his family found it hard without him close by. Ultimately, Duff pleaded with him to take a break from work because they still had young children to look after. Morse agreed and decided to go on a 25-year hiatus from acting for the sake of his brood.

What Relationship Does Morse Have with His Three Children?

After sacrificing his career to be with his family more often, Morse developed a great bond with his children. Even today, as they are all grown up, he still has good relations with them.

The "16 Blocks" star once revealed that he had always wanted to travel with his loved ones. That said, Duff suggested they purchase "an R.V. to travel in."

The family of five made that happen amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and bought "an extended Mercedes Sprinter" and custom-built it to their preference. They later traveled with it throughout different states, and Morse said the experience was memorable as it gave him a sense of freedom:

"It was glorious."

Apart from going on trips with dad, Morse's daughter Eliza is now a unit still photographer, per her Instagram bio. She works between Atlanta and Los Angeles, according to her website.

However, little is known about her twin brothers, Sam and Ben, because the family leads a private life. Her Instagram account, with over 1,000 followers, is set to private mode.
