Mississippi Teacher Who Lost 2 Babies Cannot Believe When She Learns She’s Expecting Quintuplets
A Mississippi couple wanted to start a family soon after their wedding, but fate had other plans. After two miscarriages, they tried fertility treatment, unaware that the results would shock them.
After tying the knot in 2019, Shawn and Haylee Ladner wished to have a big family. They tried to have children, but two pregnancies ended up in miscarriages.
Haylee worked as a teacher at Oak Grove Middle School, interacting with children daily. Children would surround her at work, but she had no idea that her house would soon be full of babies.
They Couldn't Have Babies
After the couple suffered two miscarriages, doctors told them Haylee had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), significantly lowering her chances of conceiving naturally.
The diagnosis broke Haylee and Shawn's dream of having a big family, but they did not lose hope. They opted for a fertility treatment called intrauterine insemination (IUI) to help them conceive.
The couple knew this treatment would help, but they had no idea it would yield shocking results. Soon after the treatment, doctors told them they were pregnant with high numbers.
The Shocking Results
When Haylee learned she had conceived more than one baby, she and her husband expected them to be twins because they had used two eggs for the treatment. However, the results showed something they weren't expecting. Haylee recalled:
"He said, 'There's five,' and I immediately was like, 'How is this possible?'"
Shawn said he asked the medical staff to count the babies in the ultrasound again. After counting multiple times, the staff confirmed Haylee had conceived five babies.
Dream Come True
The couple always wanted a big family but never thought their wish would come true instantly. They thought they would have four babies over the years, but fate gave them five in a single pregnancy.
While the couple was delighted to hear the news, they also faced challenges during the pregnancy.
The Ladners weren't prepared to care for five babies at once. While they were excited to learn about their surprise pregnancy, they didn't know how they would gather the supplies and buy five bassinets instead of one.
Preparing for the Babies
The couple tried their best to do everything in their capacity to welcome four girls and one boy. Months ago, they were trying to have one baby, but now fate had blessed them with five.
They had decided their babies' names―Adalyn Elizabeth, Magnolia Mae, Malley Kate, Everleigh Rose, and Jake Easton. Shawn said he would buy a lot of Barbie dolls and doll houses for his daughters, adding:
"I’m going to have a whole real estate company of Barbie dream houses in my house."
The Additional Costs
While the couple was delighted to hear the news, they also faced challenges during the pregnancy. Shawn had to take Haylee to the hospital for regular checkups, and her treatment was quite expensive.
To cover the costs, Shawn set up a GoFundMe page where he shared their journey and how surprised he felt after learning his wife had conceived three more babies than their expectations.
Since the hospital was two hours away from the couple's home, Shawn had to take time off from work to accompany Haylee for checkups, and he revealed:
"This commute causes missed work days and less money on my paycheck."
Requesting for Help
With the paycheck cuts, and Haylee having to take a break from teaching because doctors told her to stay home, the couple needed help with their expenses.
Thus, Shawn requested donations on his GoFundMe page to help them cover the additional costs that came with the unexpected pregnancy. He set a goal of collecting $5,000 but only managed to raise $445.
Giving Hope to Other Women
Feeling blessed to be carrying five babies instead of one, the pregnancy gave Haylee a lot of hope, and she had a message for other couples struggling to have kids.
While women had to face many more challenges conceiving a baby through fertility treatments, she felt lucky she had quintuplets at the beginning of the treatment.
She advised other women to keep trying and hoping for the best results. "Just don't give up because your miracle is still out there, just like mine was," she said.
Their Future Plans
During an interview with a local news outlet, the couple shared their thoughts about having more babies, and Shawn said five was enough; they had no plans to welcome more kids.
Meanwhile, the couple shared their pregnancy journey on their social media accounts. On January 4, 2023, Haylee updated her friends and family after her appointment with the doctor. She stated:
"Everything with babies is great; they are all growing well and have no sign of any heart defects."
According to her Facebook post, she expected to be admitted to the hospital on January 11 because doctors wanted to keep her under observation, and she requested everyone for prayers.
We wish the couple all the best and hope Haylee delivers her babies safely. We pray that she recovers quickly and raises her quintuplets with Shawn without any difficulties.
