Hollywood legend Whoopi Goldberg recently stood up for herself on the set of the talk show "The View." The "Sarafina" star had just taken her seat with her four cohosts when a heckler from the crowd decided to make their voice heard with an impudent and unexpected comment.
Goldberg's coworkers, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Joy Behar, and Alyssa Farah Griffin, barely managed to contain their laughter, and the live studio audience didn't even try as Goldberg interrupted her own introductory speech and turned to the woman in the crowd with a frown and a smile on her face.
The daring audience member had reportedly blurted out, "You old broad," while the show aired live, to which Goldberg responded, "Did you just call me an 'old broad'?" Doubling down on the surprising outburst, the audience member answered, "Yeah," and the studio rang with the laughs of the other spectators. Goldberg recalled:
"She said, 'You old broad,' and I was like, 'Hey, it's Wednesday, and I am an old broad, and happy about it!"'
Goldberg continued with the show but commented in response to the cocky heckler that old age shouldn't be something to be scoffed at. She stated, "The alternative is not attractive to any of us. We all want to be old broads and old dudes, you know?"
What Did Goldberg Say about Aging?
Goldberg is no stranger to the trials and stigma surrounding aging. The "Sister Act" star has spoken out about growing older on multiple occasions in the past. She's always been vocal about her stance on aging and has never been shy to point out that it's a natural process and an essential experience in and of itself.
Goldberg said she had dated men much younger than her in the past but admitted that these relationships weren't always straightforward.
The 67-year-old actress shared that she has never been afraid of growing older. Goldberg knew what was lying ahead for her, and instead of fighting the inevitable, she learned to embrace her age. She also admitted that her unique sense of style helped her in Hollywood, often discouraging critics from picking on her. She shared:
"I didn't have the same problems a beautiful actress has. I don't have to worry about it. My stuff's going to sag and fall and I will be fine. My chest is gonna do what it does. I can age the way I age."
Goldberg decided to address the topic of growing older in a new book. She teamed up with the exceptional late hip surgeon M.E. Hecht to discuss some of the problems and misconceptions about life after 60. The book, titled "Two Old Broads," advocates for "pro-aging" and asks, "Why can't we treat 60 as 60 and be proud of it?"
What Does Goldberg Do at Her Age?
Now that she has seen more sides of life, Goldberg has largely withdrawn from films, choosing to mainly be a cohost on "The View." But she has by no means resigned to a life lacking excitement. On an episode of her hit talk show, Goldberg spoke about her dating habits. She opened up about age gaps and said her preference often depended on the other person.
Goldberg said she had dated men much younger than her in the past but admitted that these relationships weren't always straightforward. She shared one instance when she dated a man who had no idea who the iconic band The Beatles were. To her, this seemed almost bizarre, and she used the anecdote to illustrate how complex these relationships could be.
Considering the difference in experiences that comes with dating down in terms of age, the actress now gives younger men a bit of a berth. She expressed that she's happy on her own, and after her three failed marriages, she has no intention of settling down with anyone again. Besides, her family is enough to keep her busy.
Goldberg is a proud mother, grandmother, and even a great-grandmother. The "Ghost" star had one child with Alvin Martin in 1973, a daughter named Alexandrea Dean (formerly Martin). Dean has three children of her own, Amarah Dean, Jerzey Dean, and Mason Dean.
Besides her three grandkids, Goldberg welcomed her very first great-grandchild, Charli Rose, in 2014. The famous matriarch can be unbelievably proud of her brood. Her offspring have all made an impression in their own way, and her grandson has followed her into the entertainment industry, making a name for himself as a musician.
