Grieving Widow Wears Her Wedding Dress Again to Honor Memory of Husband Who Died in Front of Her
A woman was overcome with a whirlpool of emotions after she lost her husband in a tragic kayaking accident. One day, she was cleaning the house when she stumbled upon her wedding gown. After putting it on, she sobbed uncontrollably and came up with an idea to honor her husband's memory.
Katie and Brett Swantek, from Genoa, Central Nebraska, were a lovely couple and parents to a little boy. In May 2019, they embarked on a vacation, hoping to have a wonderful time while indulging in an array of exciting activities. Little did they know that an unlikely happening would change their lives forever.
They were kayaking in the Loup River over Memorial Day weekend when Brett's kayak was stuck in an undertow. Consequently, he was swept away by the raging water waves, and his body was found ten days later. His sudden death shattered Katie to the core, and she was left reeling from the soul-crushing pain.
A Life-Changing Loss
The last time she saw her husband, he still had his wedding ring on—a profoundly heartbreaking sight for Katie, whose world changed most unexpectedly. The heartbroken woman had to gather herself and be strong for her three-year-old son, who was left without a father and needed her now more than ever.
The photoshoot also had some emotional moments, such as when the single mom wrapped herself in the flag presented at her firefighter husband's funeral.
Missing Her Beloved & Struggling with the Pain
Although it wasn't easy, Katie tried her best not to fall apart, but no matter what she did, she was reminded of Brett and all the lovely moments they shared. She said her husband had always maintained a positive outlook and never hesitated to help people in challenging times.
The Nebraska woman recalled how she and Brett loved having fun and made the most of every moment. As time passed, a lot changed around Katie, but deep down, she still missed her husband and wanted nothing more than to see and hold him one last time. She expressed:
"I will never be the same; we undoubtedly loved each other so much. And he told me that [every day]."
Finding Her Wedding Dress & Putting It On
Unbeknownst to Katie, her grief and trauma would soon become a catalyst for something special—constituting a sweet memory that would forever be etched in her mind.
Three months after the life-changing accident, the Genoa resident was cleaning her house when she discovered a box. When she opened it, she was baffled to see that it contained her wedding dress.
As she held the gown in her arms and hugged it, she couldn't keep her tears from falling. Wanting to relive the day it all started, she donned her bridal dress, sat down, and watched her wedding video.
The young widow's emotions were all over the place as she saw herself and Brett exchange their wedding vows in the video. She didn't want to take her dress off and spent most of her day crying her heart out and reminiscing on how beautiful things were once upon a time.
Drawing Inspiration
While she sat drenched in grief and deep nostalgia, Katie had an idea inspired by the popular TV show, "Friends." In one of the episodes called "The One With All The Wedding Dresses," Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe sat on the couch in their wedding gowns and downed beers to uplift Rachel's spirits.
Inspired by that episode, Katie turned to Facebook and created a group chat titled "Brides and Beers." Seven friends showed up in response to her call and brought along their wedding dresses. While some women's gowns were a perfect fit, others struggled but managed to make it work.
Posing with Her Girl Gang
Katie also called her friend and photographer, Miranda Helmuth, to capture the moment. With her girl gang, she put her wedding dress on and went to her backyard at dusk, where she and Brett had shared many heartwarming moments. She recounted:
"It was the most gorgeous night. We felt like Brett painted the perfect sky for us for pictures."
In addition to drinking beer and posing in their wedding gowns, Katie and her friends laughed, cried, and exchanged exciting stories from their big day. The photoshoot also had some emotional moments, such as when the single mom wrapped herself in the flag presented at her firefighter husband's funeral.
Thinking Of Her Husband
Katie said she wished to create brand new and happy memories in her wedding dress—something she knew her husband would have approved of. "Had he not passed away, I know he would have said, '[Go] do it," she assured.
Seeing herself having fun in her bridal gown, Katie couldn't help but feel a bittersweet comfort, knowing that her husband was there in spirit. "I can definitely still feel [Brett] holding me in this," said the young widow.

The Dog's Cameo & Her Son's Reaction
To make the photoshoot even more special, the couple's dog also made an appearance, which shocked Katie because he was usually shy and steered clear of people.
Her little boy, who was out with a friend of hers, returned later and was awestruck when he saw his mom. The young mother was reduced to tears as her son complimented her—something that reminded her of Brett.
While the Swanteks might never fully come to terms with their irreparable loss, we're glad Katie could share her grief with her friends and feel some semblance of normalcy.
