Although Barbara Eden found widespread fame with her role in "I Dream of Jeannie," the actress' career took a while to get off the ground. Before she landed the iconic role, she made ends meet by working at a bank. Barbara opened up about her life before she became famous, saying she had difficulty breaking into show business.

Barbara blamed her inexperience for her failure to find a role outright. She confessed that she was young when she started out, and with no one to guide her and mentor her about life in the entertainment industry, she didn't know how to go about finding work. So, the actress opted for a day job at a bank while she found her feet.

Eventually, Barbara landed a few minor roles, and in 1965, she started starring in the TV show that made her famous. After "I Dream of Jeannie" ended, she starred in a few other roles, including two films, "Harper Valley P.T.A." and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," and a few appearances and Aunt Irma on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch."

Although Barbara found success as an actress, tragedy also plagued her for a long time. She endured two painful divorces between 1958 and 1983. The actress also suffered the loss of two sons. She had her first son with fellow actor Michael Ansara in 1965. The couple named the boy Matthew Ansara, and he grew up to be an actor like his parents.

Barbara and Michael expected to have another baby crawling around the house, but by the time the actress was eight months pregnant, doctors informed her that the baby had died in her womb. On top of that, Matthew passed away years later at the age of 35 after carving out a successful acting career for himself.

Fans couldn't believe what they were seeing as the nonagenarian strutted comfortably in her impressive outfit. Others reciprocated the thought, verbalizing their disbelief at seeing Barbara waltz around like she was half her age. One user commented, "This is a recent photo?? Barbara Eden is 91 years old? She looks barely 60." Some merely expressed how beautiful she looked, saying, "Wow. She looks great."

Many wondered how she managed to stay so healthy and look so young despite her advanced age. Luckily, Barbara's secret to aging beautifully isn't a secret. The actress has opened up about her diet and workout on multiple occasions, saying she prefers to keep things simple and stick to what she knows works.

The actress shared that her diet mainly consists of meat. Instead of promoting the vegetable-based diets so commonly found among Hollywood big-shots, Barbara's diet is much more "carnivorous." She enjoys pork, chicken, and steak, although she admitted to mixing in vegetables now and again.

Besides following a strict high-protein diet, Barbara also said exercise is imperative to her well-being. She makes sure to break a good sweat at least three times a week, mainly by lifting weights and doing spins. Barbara added that this routine allows her to splurge on desserts without feeling guilty.

What Is Her Secret to a "Happy" Love Life of 30 Years?

After two failed marriages, Barbara finally settled down with Jon Eicholtz in 1991. Since they said their vows, the couple has been happily married for more than 30 years. Although they've had rough patches over the years, they've always managed to put their love before the conflict, remembering why they got together in the first place.

In 2020, Barbara opened up about what made her marriage to Jon so successful. The actress confessed that they share a special bond and genuinely enjoy each other's company. She also mentioned that they often put the other before themselves, and Barbara often does things with Jon merely to spend time together. She shared:

"I think you have to like each other a lot. No, you really do. You don't necessarily have to like the same things. I don't play golf. I don't like to watch baseball … and he loves to watch the Angels. But I do because I love him. And I like him. So I'll watch with him."

Meanwhile, Jon doesn't mind when Barbara has to work long hours and at irregular intervals. Barbara confessed that her husband is glad she has a job she enjoys and encourages her to keep working. She also noted that she's "lucky" to have such a "happy" marriage.

The actress also said they adopted a dog during the lockdown. She mentioned that the dog brought a new spark to the household while they were cooped up in the house. Although Jon isn't the biggest fan of dogs, they've both warmed to the pup considerably, and their lockdown wouldn't have been the same without it.

Barbara also shared that they try to handle conflict by putting themselves in the other person's shoes. Although she admitted that seeing a situation from someone else's perspective isn't always as easy as it sounds, she advised fans that it can often work wonders.

Barbara can't stress the benefits that being friends with her significant other has brought over the years. The actress also swears by the maxim of unconditional love, saying she and Jon have been there for each other no matter what. Barbara shared, "What I know about marriage is that you have to have patience and be friends."
