Cindy and her husband, Bill, have been steadfast for almost forty years. Even after tying the knot two decades ago, Cindy has remained an unwavering support for her beloved spouse.
In a 2014 interview with KU Sports, Bill talked about a time when he was under a lot of pressure on the court to make sure his team won, and Cindy's text messages helped calm him down and remind him to enjoy the process.
Cindy, who had experienced being an athlete herself, understood the challenges that her husband faced and thus became a compassionate and empathetic partner to him.
Cindy Was Athletic in High School and College
Cindy was born in Oklahoma City and grew up in Yukon, Oklahoma. Her father was an Oklahoma County comptroller, and her mother was a housewife and a former secretary. Cindy's parents have both retired from their professions at this point.
When she was young, Cindy was fond of sports and participated in gymnastics, softball, and track. It was during high school that she was able to pursue her interest in track.
Cindy was a cheerleader as well as a track athlete in high school. She continued her cheerleading career when she enrolled at Oklahoma State University. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from the university in 1986.
Cindy Wasn't a Bill Self Fan at First
It's interesting to note that Cindy was not a fan of Bill at first, and they only became acquainted with each other in 1984. Subsequently, four years later, on August 12, 1988, the couple tied the knot.
The couple has had ups and downs in their marriage. Cindy stated in 2007 that the required high level of dedication and the numerous requests from various people were the most challenging aspects of Bill's work.
Cindy has helped numerous charitable foundations while also supporting her husband's professional endeavors.
She stated that Bill is dedicated to his job but struggles with declining requests. As a result, whenever they have the chance to meet him, they try to maximize their time with him.
Together, the longtime couple has two children: a son named Tyler and a daughter named Lauren. Cindy had faced occasional challenges in raising their children alone.
She once admitted that the unexpected attention she and her children received from the media and public made them uncomfortable, except for Bill, who has been accustomed to being in the spotlight.
Bill and Cindy, a couple known for their comedic moments, shared how they spent their typical days together. They prefer to watch sports and hang out at home instead of going to the movies.
Bill said he likes to rewatch game replays after a win but goes straight to sleep after a loss. Cindy has learned a thing or two about dealing with wins and losses. She explained in 2010:
"Over the years I've learned you can't get too high or too low, because it's going to change."
Meanwhile, Bill does not pay attention to fans' reactions, whereas his wife has been paying more attention to fan comments and media coverage than he does. She listens to the radio and reads papers, he added.
At that time, Bill said they only had dinner as a family once a week during the season because their daughter attended KU and their son was at Free State High.
Cindy Brings a Lot of Things to the Team
Cindy's contributions to the team have been multifaceted. She offers emotional support to players and shows a deep understanding of their experiences, homesickness, and other challenges.
Cindy's consistency reassured everyone. Her presence, according to Bill, was important for the boys because she provided them with something that could not be replaced: consistency. Bill remarked:
"If there was such a thing as a perfect coach's wife, Cindy would be her. She is unselfish of my time, she is independent but always there to focus on the team and our family."
