D'nette Bassett is the younger sister of Hollywood star Angela Bassett. While both the Bassett sisters pursued tertiary education, D'nette decided an acting career wasn't in her cards. She led a private life outside the spotlight, only rarely appearing with her famous sister in public.

Angela Bassett may be one of Hollywood's most prominent actresses, but the "Black Panther" star has a younger sibling, D'nette Bassett, who has guarded herself against the limelight. Despite her sister's fame, D'nette prefers to lead a private life.

The same has gone for her career, as she's had no affiliations with the entertainment industry. Still, despite these differences, D'nette maintains a loving relationship with Angela and her family. The two regularly spend time together, whether they're having fun or attending high-profile events.

D'nette Bassett Was Raised by a Single Mother

After their parents separated, D'nette and Angela relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida, with their mom, Betty Jane Bassett, where they spent their formative years. The sisters rarely saw their dad afterward, and Betty became their sole provider.

It was challenging, but Betty persevered for her daughters. She enrolled in night school to qualify for a secretarial job and eventually found work at the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services.

D'nette and Angela would help her study for her assessments, quizzing her with flashcards. And in the same way she made those efforts, putting herself through school to ensure her daughters didn't have a difficult life, Betty also expected them to go through college.

Despite being under "a great deal of stress" from raising two girls, as Angela explained, she wanted D'nette and her older sister to reach their highest potential by educating themselves and becoming independent women who could take good care of themselves.

Sadly, Betty passed away in June 2014. The cause of her death is unknown, but in lieu of sending flowers, close friends and family who found her obituary online were urged to donate to the American Heart or Lung Association in her name and honor.

D'nette Bassett Was a History Teacher

Just as her mother wished, D'nette graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Relations and History at William Penn College in 1982. She worked as a History teacher at Walter Williams High School from October of that year until August 1983.

She then moved to Winston-Salem State University, where she worked as a Tutorial Coordinator for eleven months. From June 1984 to date, according to her Facebook bio, D'nette has held the position of Customer Manager at U.S. Airways in Charlotte, North Carolina.

D'nette's personal life is little known, as she has yet to expose much of it on her socials. She's listed among her mother's children in her obituary; however, only her niece and nephew appear as Betty's grandchildren. There's also no mention of a husband for D'nette.

D'nette and Angela Bassett's Relationship

D'nette has a close relationship with Angela. Although she's the younger sister, she advised the "American Horror Story" star when she first married Courtney B. Vance that her husband came first. And although that advice was meant for Angela, Courtney also internalized it, as he explained:

"And so that stuck in my mind that, throughout all the problems we go through in terms of having children, she's first. And I wanted her to know, it's not about the babies for me, it's about her."

Through the lens that D'nette provided, Courtney learned that when he put his wife first, it positively informed the decisions they made about their children. And it seems the actor has an endearing relationship with his sister-in-law, as the two accompanied each other to the opening of the Soul Of A Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963-1983 Art Exhibition in 2019.

D'nette also spent the 2022 New Year's Eve with her sister's family, including her twins, Slater Vance and Bronwyn Vance. She was due to fly to meet Angela earlier this month, as the actress revealed during her recent interview with the Washington Post. Angela said D'nette, her family, and her work were the main things that kept her grounded.
