After mentioning her late parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, the actress shared her shock at winning, saying, "I just won an Oscar." Addressing her Hollywood star parents on "Today," Jamie Lee said they had been her "beautiful shadow" throughout her life.

The award-winner shared that her parents always symbolically walked into a room before her whenever she went anywhere, and she tried to accept and understand it "with grace." She revealed how her parents had been nominated for Oscars when they were alive but never won.

She also thanked her friends who'd wanted the win for her more than she'd ever dreamt of wanting it. The actress jokingly admitted that she was "a little weepy," but thankful for getting validation from her peers after spending over 40 years in Hollywood.

Christopher's wife noted how longing for appreciation and attention was a universal thing. The mother of two said one always hoped someone appreciated them no matter what job one did, and winning the award was a "shiny' and "lovely" gesture of that.

The first-time Academy Award-winner also specifically mentioned one of her daughters in her acceptance speech. However, what the "Halloween Ends" star didn't anticipate was that social media users would troll her for speaking about her child.

Jamie Lee also mentioned to the "Today" hosts that her Oscar award wouldn't be referred to in any specific pronoun in tribute to her daughter, Ruby Guest, then 26, who was non-binary. Instead, the statue would be called a they/them, with her adding:

A day after the actress featured on the "Today" show, CNN shared a Facebook article noting how the star had honored her daughter with her Oscar statue. Some Facebook users were bothered by her supporting her child with one person writing:

"So sad for her. If she is publically (sic) showing support for her son's confusion then she is just as confused as he is."

Someone else felt being transgender was a "delusion" and couldn't be supported. The critic urged people to tell those suffering from the delusion the truth so that they could be set free by it. A netizen simply called Jamie Lee "insane."

Another person thought it a strange coincidence that many celebrities had transgender children. However, coming to the realization that they were transgender wasn't an easy or overnight thing that Ruby did, as it came with its own trials and tribulations.

What to Know about Jamie Lee’s Transgender Daughter

In 2020, Ruby called for a meeting with her parents to tell them something very important. During their backyard meeting in their Los Angeles home, Jamie Lee's daughter revealed how they were going to come out as transgender, but couldn't.

The following year, Ruby confessed in an interview about how that moment had been scary for them. The mere act of telling their parents something about them that they didn't know was daunting, before admitting that they felt intimidated about the situation, noting:

The comedy director's daughter left after the revelation and then texted their mother. Jamie Lee recalled calling Ruby back immediately to discuss the matter and the pair shed some tears.

During the interview, the star [Jamie Lee Curtis] admitted to messing up twice already because she was human.

At age 25, Christopher's daughter was working as a video editor for a gaming personality on YouTube. By then, they were more at ease around their mother, and spoke about their journey publicly for the first time in October 2021.

The actress admitted that she struggled with some fears, but was always there to listen to her daughter. Jamie Lee explained how it felt like she was learning to speak another language with all the new words and terminology.

Like most parents, Ruby's mother confessed to being new at it, and that she wasn't pretending to know a lot when she didn't. However, the actress wasn't being hard on herself as she acknowledged how she was still going to make mistakes, but tried to avoid making big ones.

Christopher's wife was learning how to slow her speech down and becoming more mindful about what and how she was saying things. During the interview, the star admitted to messing up twice already because she was human.

Despite that, what she hoped was that people who read the People article and saw the photo of her and her daughter would have a positive takeaway. The actress hoped it would make others feel free to openly embrace who they were, because if that happened, than the interview was worth it.

When Ruby was 16, they had a chance to come out as transgender but didn't because of a negative experience. However, seven years later, while still being Tom, they confessed the truth to the person who became their fiancé (and later they married), and their reaction was that they loved Ruby for who they were.
