Jamie Lee Curtis Cried after Oscar Win Yet Was Told She Doesn't Deserve It - Husband Embraced Her during Rare Sighting
- Jamie Lee Curtis won her first Academy Award at 64 on March 12, 2023, for the film "Everything Everywhere All at Once."
- The actress couldn't help but laugh, cry, and celebrate her win emotionally, and her husband, Christopher Guest, was by her side. Unfortunately, she was blasted for winning over another major actress.
- She has been with Guest since 1984, and although it's rare to see them together so publicly, their love story is the definition of "relationship goals."
Jamie Lee Curtis is a big name in Hollywood, so it's hard to believe that she won her first Oscar at the age of 64 thanks to her supporting role in the highly-praised film, "Everything Everywhere All at Once."
The movie and the rest of the cast also swept the rest of the ceremony, taking home the most awards, except for Best Actor, which went to Brenda Fraser for "The Whale." However, it was a tearful and wonderful night for all the winners and fans alike.

Curtis famously made her film debut in John Carpenter's "Halloween," a franchise still running today. The actress is still the main leading lady in all those movies. She's also the daughter of Janet Leigh, the star of "Psycho" and Tony Curtis.
She has also been part of many other great films such as "Trading Places," a role that transitioned her from a teen horror star to an adult woman, "Knives Out," "A Fish Called," "Blue Steel," "Prom Night," and countless others. However, her penchant for horror movies dubbed her "Scream Queen."
She also worked on television with roles in "Anything But Love," for which she won a Golden Globe. Audiences might also remember her in "Nicholas' Gift." Curtis was nominated for an Emmy back then but ultimately didn't win.

The actress also managed to nab the Screen Actors Guild for best supporting actress and was nominated for BAFTA and Golden Globes. During her Oscar acceptance speech, Curtis said that this moment was for the "hundreds of people" who had supported her until then.
She thanked the cast and crew of "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and her family, including her husband, Christopher Guest, and their daughters, Annie and Ruby. She also included her sister, Kelly. Curtis finished by dedicating the award to:
"All of the people who have supported the genre movies I have made all these years, the hundreds and thousands of people: we just won an Oscar! Together! I just won an Oscar!"

It's easy to believe that Jamie Lee Curtis' life was privileged and straightforward because of her famous parents, but that's not exactly right. The actress was born after her sister Kelly Lee, and she has called herself the "save the marriage baby."
However, her birth didn't save Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis' relationship. The actress added:
"My parents divorced when I was three. It was horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible. I was also raised by my mom, who came from nothing and treated this industry like, with big wide eyes. I don't have big wide eyes about it. I understand the industry. But I have the same gratitude for it."

Curtis said that people should listen to Janis Ian's son "At Seventeen" to understand her life. It's still her favorite song, and she listens to it every week. She explained:
"It's so beautiful, and it's such a heartfelt struggle of self-hood, of looking in the mirror and trying to understand who we are. It's a particularly poignant time for me, adolescence—I hated it."
After over four decades in the business, Curtis has accumulated a net worth of $35 million.

"You Don't Deserve It"
The Oscars award the best in film, but there are so many great nominees that people are bound to be disappointed when their favorite doesn't earn the top prize. However, Jamie Lee Curtis received severe backlash over her win on March 12, 2023.
Some Twitter users mocked her for crying on stage and said she didn't deserve the award. One user, @bubblyxin wrote, "Oh Jamie Lee Curtis, the amount of dislike you'll get. I'm sorry, granny, but you don't deserve that award…."
Another online netizen, @Dr7gns, added, "You're telling me that corny ass Performance from Jamie Lee Curtis was better than this piece of Art Angela Bassett delivered?"
Another Twitter user wrote, "I don't like Jamie Lee Curtis, and if she wins tonight, I'm going to be annoyed. She did nothing in EEAAO and doesn't even deserve her nomination."
Meanwhile, user @BirdonaTrip took to the platform and said, "I don't understand how u can be Jamie Lee Curtis and not feel awful getting that award like ain't no way she don't know who she robbed, ain't no way she don't know she didn't deserve that over Angela and Stephanie."
Meanwhile, @Katieb121 was not pleased about Curtis' win either. She added, "She should return the Oscar! Not deserved at all."
These comments are usual after most award shows, but an Insider article by JP Mangalindan repeated the same sentiment. The headline reads, "It shouldn't have been Jamie Lee Curtis' year to win an Oscar — sorry."
Mangalindan posted an opinion piece on March 13, 2023, and explained that when the actress' name was called at the Sunday ceremony, they immediately looked for Angela Bassett's reaction. Angela Bassett was also nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda on "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
She had already snatched the Golden Globe for it, so many netizens hoped she would win her first Oscar. All viewers noted that the actress didn't seem to react well when Curtis' name was called. She didn't clap, and her face was not pleased.
All the other nominees were clapping and smiling for the "Halloween" actress. At the very least, they were faking happiness, but Bassett refused to do that. Mangalinda called it "the most honest moment of the three and half hour telecast." They also wrote:
"There were more deserving nominees in the best-supporting-actress category, to be sure."
Among the other actresses nominated in the category was Stephanie Hsu for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" as well. She was in the film more than Curtis, and according to Mangalinda, delivered a more emotional performance as Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki.
Hong Chau was also nominated for "The Whale," however, the article's clear favorite was Angela Bassett, whose performance more than made up for Chadwick Boseman's absence after losing a long battle with cancer in 2020.
Her win would've also been a historic moment for Marvel movies, as it was the first any actor from the franchise had been nominated for major awards. However, Mangalinda doesn't question Jamie Lee Curtis' talent.
Instead, they claim that her role as the IRS tax collector Deirdre Beaubeirdre, as well as her characters in the multiverse of that story, might have been funny, but it wasn't deserving of an Academy Award.
Most actors fake their reactions when they lose such a coveted prize, but Bassett's face went viral, and Twitter had a field day, praising her for being honest. Political activist Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu wrote on Twitter:
"I'm glad she didn't fake a reaction to entertain idiots telling us how a Black woman should handle Hollywood once again throwing awards at White women."
Meanwhile, Mangalinda argued that this award for Curtis wasn't just for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" but for her entire career in Hollywood. The Academy had done similarly in the past, including when Leonardo DiCaprio won for "The Revenant" after years of being snubbed.
Regardless, all actresses nominated for the 2023 ceremony could've won after such impressive performances in all film genres. Only one person can take home the golden statue; it was Jamie Lee Curtis' turn.
Her Husband Is Right Behind Her Even if Others Aren't
Despite the viral reaction and comments on social media, Curtis won't let anyone take away her joy after this career achievement, especially because her husband, Christopher Guest, is right by her side. He cheered and clapped as she accepted the biggest award in film.
They glammed up for their red – champagne – carpet, and Curtis rocked a Dolce & Gabbana dress filled with rhinestones. The previous day, the actress took to Twitter and wrote: "Apparently, at the @TheAcademy. Oscars, their carpet is going to match my drapes."

Her husband appeared in a black tuxedo with a nice bow tie to match. During an interview with Laverne Cox on E!, the actress talked about what they did while getting ready for the ceremony, revealing the nice gesture from her husband earlier that day.
"My husband made me a little breakfast. That was what he offered," she explained. Curtis also said, "My goal in life as an old lady is just to say: 'Relax, you are enough. This is a perfect moment right now.'"

During her speech at the Oscars, she also thanked her husband. "I know it looks like I'm standing up here by myself, but I'm not. I am hundreds of people," the actress began emotionally. She added:
"We just won an Oscar together!"
She and Christopher Guest have been married since 1984 and have two children: Ruby and Annie. When asked about her secret for a long-lasting relationship, the actress recommended not leaving because things will always improve.

"There's a recovery phrase that says, 'Stay on the bus…the scenery will change.' You think you're having a bad week but stay on the bus because one of these days, you'll look out the window, and it'll be beautiful. I think it can apply to almost anything where you feel unhappy in that moment. I'm not a wild romantic. I'm a realist. I respect him. And I just don't leave."
The actress added that he is her "one and only" because she never had big expectations of what romance is genuinely like, although she likes to think of herself as a "serious romantic." They try to be supportive and lovely-dovey when possible, such as writing him a song for their 35th wedding anniversary.

The lyrics revealed how safe she feels with him, how he is her home, and how happy she is when she arrives at their house and he is waiting for her. The actress added:
"That's the long marriage. It's the safety of knowing his car is in the garage, that I'm not alone, and that he's here."
