Little Girl Asks Lady Adopting Her Brother: 'Do You Want to Be My Mom Too?'
A young girl discovered a couple wanted to adopt her younger brother. Fearing they would be separated for good, she asked the adoptive mother a question that left her thinking for months.
While not all callings are the same, many people believe that, more than anything, life is worth living with family. Some people have it easy and conceive children right away, while some struggle with infertility and have to undergo several treatments to try and have kids.
Regardless, the end goal is always to have a child, or children, to make the most out of life. For a couple in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this has been their life-long dream.
Struggling to Conceive
After five challenging and heartbreaking attempts to have biological children, Fabiana Perez and Norberto Vega decided to find other ways to start a family. They had gone through painful miscarriages, a case of thrombophilia, and several sessions of highly complex treatments that led to nothing.
The couple was devastated and saddened to discover that nothing worked despite all their efforts to have a child. At first, adoption was not an option because they wanted biological children like their siblings. Perez said:
"For me, adoption was never a possibility. I wanted to go through the pregnancy. I saw my sisters: they were both younger than me, and they both had twins, and I wanted to experience that."
A Change of Heart
When they realized the clock was ticking and their chances were slim, the couple started to consider adoption slowly. However, it was not an easy decision, as they feared that if they adopted a child, someone would one day take that child away.
Despite all the doubts they were feeling, the couple decided to register for adoption. Like many other applicants, they wanted to adopt a child who was, at most, three years old.
This was because they believed raising a child who has not yet developed their personality would be easy. Perez and Vega's application was received, but they were suggested not to wait and find their children by visiting several homes.
The Fateful Trip
At the time, the couple had several friends in Misiones who invited them to come and visit the place, where there were several homes with children longing for parents. Thus, in 2012, instead of hitting the beach and the falls, they visited Misiones to search for their child.
Upon arriving, they couldn't help but notice the scorching heat, but they were willing to endure it if it meant completing their family. They entered a home and were immediately greeted by a young boy named Ezequiel. He was eating a lollipop and wearing a diaper when he approached Perez and Vega.
The young boy gave them the biggest hugs and kissed them without knowing who they were. The couple looked at each other, and they both knew. "It's him," they both said.
The following day, the couple wasted no time and contacted a lawyer. They filed the paperwork to adopt the boy but never heard from the court for months.
Perez's adoption fears started to linger again. She worried other people were also trying to adopt Ezequiel, which was why it was taking long.
However, they would later discover the reason they were holding off on the adoption of Ezequiel was they were waiting for parents who were willing to adopt both him and his five-year-old sister.
A Difficult Decision
Perez and Vega realized that if they wanted to adopt Ezequiel, they would also need to adopt his sister Betiana. However, it wasn't an easy decision because Betiana needed medical attention due to severe burns on her face from a fire.
The couple was told that Betiana didn't have formal schooling to avoid being bullied for her appearance, so they were even more fearful that if she was being protected from bullying in such a small town, she may experience worse if they took her home to Buenos Aires.
But despite their worries, something happened that made the decision easier. They were visiting Ezequiel when Betiana sat on Perez's lap. While Perez rocked the child, the little girl suddenly asked her: "Don't you want to adopt me? Don't you want to be my mother too?"
That was all Perez needed to hear, and she decided to adopt both children. But the road wasn't easy. The court didn't want to grant the adoption.
Convincing the Judge
In April 2013, Perez spent her birthday with the children. At the time, the keepers at the home were already allowing the couple to take them to the park or the square.
That day, though, Perez and Vega decided to take them to the judge. "What else do you need to see?" the desperate woman asked the judge. At the time, Betiana's condition was worsening as she could only breathe with her mouth, she was constantly drooling, and her teeth were getting bad.
To their surprise, the judge gave them a strange answer: "Well, take them if you already took them out." But Perez refused to accept this answer and pushed to adopt them legally because she wanted to be their mother and not steal them.
Perez stayed by the children's side for months while the court processed the adoption papers. She left her business with her mother, and Vega went home to Buenos Aires to work.
When October came, and the judge still had no decision, she begged them to sign the papers. Her sisters even created a petition, which over 12,000 people signed. Thanks to the petition, the supreme court finally took notice of their case and granted the adoption.
Caring for Betiana
Two months later, Betiana finally got the medical care she needed. She also started going to school. The young girl fit in perfectly with her peers and was even chosen as the top student at one point.
The couple took Betiana to a psychologist because they wanted her to grow up without traumas. But after several sessions, the psychologist deemed her fit and no longer needing help. She was already starting to overcome her trauma thanks to the love she was receiving.
Although they have a long way to go, with many more challenges to overcome as a family, they are optimistic for as long as they're together.
