One day, a man received a call from a friend and learned something heartbreaking—the girl he had a crush on from high school had been in an accident. When he visited her in the hospital, he didn't recognize the person he saw. But at that moment, he felt something profoundly heartwarming.

Sunitha Atinus hailed from Coimbatore, India, and described herself as someone people envied. Because of her beauty and charming demeanor, she never found it hard to be in a relationship and was used to boys craving her attention and time.

Still, life wasn't easy for Sunitha. She lived with her family in a small house and saw her parents struggle to put food on the table. Growing up with a drunkard father and a difficult childhood, Sunitha longed for a better life and was determined to turn things around.

An Unimaginable Occurrence

After finishing grade 12, Sunitha moved to Bangalore, where she began studying physiotherapy and found a job. In August 2011, she was on her way home with friends who volunteered to take her when something unimaginable happened.

During that period, Sunitha said she learned eye-opening lessons about relationships.

A Terrible Accident

Sunitha felt her friend's tears fall on her arms sometime later as he pleaded with her not to leave him. It turned out that while she was asleep in the back of the car, it toppled over three times, crashing straight into the divider.

Because Sunitha was by the window when the car rolled over, her hair got entangled and her face was thrust out of the window, and she was terribly hurt. Shortly afterward, she was taken to the hospital; unfortunately, nothing was left of her face.

Suffering Severe Injuries

Sunitha suffered severe facial injuries and required multiple surgeries to fix her eyes, nose, and jaw. For a long time, she was advised to avoid mirrors so she wouldn't catch a glimpse of her disfigured face.

But one day, she accidentally saw her reflection in the glass elevator door. Sunitha was disheartened and frightened and couldn't recognize the person staring back at her. From 2011 until 2014, she underwent 27 surgical procedures.

Recovering from the Ordeal & Learning New Lessons

Sunitha also lost her senses of taste and smell and was told her tear glands had malfunctioned. She had difficulty closing her mouth and eating food.

During that period, Sunitha said she learned eye-opening lessons about relationships. While some people reciprocated her pain, others walked away, and some weren't courageous enough to see her.

After leaving the hospital, she spent some time in Tamil Nadu before returning to Bangalore. There, she reconnected with a man, Jay Prakash, who had liked her since she was a teenager.

Finding Love & Strength

One thing led to another, and the duo decided to stay together for the rest of their lives. Following January 2012, Jay accompanied Sunitha for all her doctors' visits. Regarding her beautiful relationship, Sunitha expressed:

"To him, my accident, my surgeries, my tough childhood, nothing mattered. We got married in 2014. People even told me not to have babies because they'd have my face, but we laugh these things off."

Furious, frustrated, and shattered by everything she had experienced, Sunitha gradually learned to change her perspective. Instead of hating herself and avoiding her reflection, she found strength in her survival. "I am told that I am blessed, and I am a miracle," added Sunitha.

The Pain of One-Sided Love

Jay also narrated his version of the story to "BeingYou" in September 2017. In 2004, he was 17 when he saw a girl walking past his classroom and fell in love with her at first sight. He had never seen someone like her and became instantly smitten.

As time passed, Jay befriended the girl, but whenever he saw her with someone else, his heart couldn't take the pain. He didn't have much hope for his unrequited love, so he thought it best to keep his distance. The girl moved to Bangalore, and he never met anyone like her since.

The Heartbreaking Visit

Jay and the girl connected briefly on his birthday in 2007 but soon became occupied with their lives. Four years later, in November 2011, a mutual friend called him and said the girl had been in an accident.

Before visiting her in the hospital, Jay talked to her on the phone and didn't recognize her voice. But when he saw her in person, he was taken aback. Right before him was a girl with no hair, a distorted face, no mouth, nose, and teeth, and stumbling like a 90-year-old.

The Message That Changed Everything

Jay was baffled and lost for words. While he struggled with emotions, it dawned on him that he loved the girl wholeheartedly. He picked up his phone when he returned home and sent her a message. He wrote:

Unbothered by Criticism

Things worked out between the duo, and in January 2014, Jay and the girl, Sunitha, got engaged. Soon afterward, they started their wedding preparations. Although they faced many problems due to their financial situation, they didn't despair.

Jay said he was in shorts cleaning the place on the morning of their wedding reception. People reportedly questioned his urgency for a wedding; some even told him not to have kids with his fiancée because of her face.

Even after their marriage, Jay said people looked at Sunitha and pitied her, thinking he had done her a huge favor. But Sunitha's husband couldn't be happier because he married her out of love, and she changed his life for the best.

The Real Definition of Love

As of 2023, the couple is happily married and parents to two kids, Atmia and Amik. They wake up every morning with gratitude and love in their hearts. Through their union, Jay learned that love wasn't about materialism or physical beauty but a lovely connection between souls.

Regardless of people's opinions, what mattered to Jay was only one thing—being with Sunitha felt right, and he loved her beyond infinity!
