The actor suddenly became a star in Hollywood and appeared in several hit films such as "North Dallas Forty," "48 HRS," and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills." Even with this newly-found fame, Nick was still a mess. He noted:

"My career as an actor had skyrocketed to heights I had never imagined. But instead of finding peace and a degree of meaning in my success, I continued to find life offstage and away from the cameras challenging."

In 1992, Nick was named the sexiest man alive by People Magazine. However, ten years after this, the actor said, "he looked to all the world like a madman."

The trauma he had carried all his life led him to drink to deal with anything difficult, including failed relationships and projects. "I started using harder drugs to close off the pain and suffering of life-in other words, to escape life," he revealed.

Nick's search for love and acceptance was in vain, as he was married and divorced three times before meeting his current love. The actor is now in a long-term relationship.
