Openly Gay Actor Andrew Scott Does Not View His Sexuality as a Political Statement

Scott came out as gay in his early 20s. Despite a Catholic upbringing, he was relieved that his parents were liberal, accepting, and supportive.

However, the actor feels the term "openly gay" does not reflect who he is, as he doesn't like to be defined as one particular thing. He refuses to see his sexuality as a political statement:

"Sexuality isn't something you can cultivate, particularly. It isn't a talent."

Scott firmly believes his sexual orientation does not hinder his ability to portray heterosexual characters convincingly. His acting is a testament to this belief. His off-screen sexuality didn't chip away at the credibility of his on-screen romance with Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character in "Fleabag."

The actor's captivating performance was every bit as authentic, proving once again that talent transcends personal identities. In a candid discussion with fellow openly gay actor Ben Whishaw, Scott affirmed that on-screen chemistry has little to do with actors' sexual orientation. He said that it instead requires "eros, a sense of playfulness, an idea of imagination."

Andrew Scott Was in a Discreet Long-Term Relationship with Writer Stephen Beresford

Despite his high-profile career, Scott prefers to keep his private life out of the media. He believes that speculations about his love life emerge only when he discusses it publicly. Hence his self-imposed rule: he doesn't talk about it.

For years, he managed to keep the identity of his partner under wraps, only admitting that he worked in the same industry. Later, it was revealed that his partner was none other than playwright Stephen Beresford, renowned for his work on "The Last of the Haussmans" for the National Theatre and films like "Pride" and "Tolkien."

The couple had reportedly been together for about a decade before they decided to part ways in 2019. Interestingly, Scott and Beresford were seen together in 2022, suggesting their separation was amicable.

Andrew Scott's Dating Life Is a Mystery

After his split with Beresford, Scott has managed to avoid any dating rumors. Given his reluctance to discuss his love life, whether he is single or not is uncertain.

In 2020, he admitted he once found it challenging to live alone the first time he tried it. Although it was a tough transition, he was proud of himself for facing the challenge head-on. He remarked:

"I feel like I have a good relationship with who I am. I really enjoy my work, really enjoy my life. I feel like I know myself a lot better."

The actor also said that his attitude towards relationships and sexuality changed. On the podcast, he also discussed some of the terms people use around sex, including how people use "casual sex" to make others feel shame about their sex lives.

Scott believes casual relationships could be meaningful because learning from someone does not come from how much time you spend with the person. He also believes people should be able to make mistakes and discover who they are.
