A mother was devastated when her daughter was asked to leave prom because she was in violation of the school's dress code.

Mireya Briceno was a senior at Muskegon High School and had attended Muskegon Public Schools since kindergarten. Her Mother, Connie Briceno, said her daughter was unfairly kicked out of prom.

Muskegon High School's principal, Brad Perkins, said he had been praised for the decision, which was made by another staff member. However, Perkins said he did not know why the dress was determined to have violated school rules.

Perkins also said the school ensured students knew the dress guidelines before they purchased prom tickets. He added that a video showing the do's and don'ts had been playing in the school media center and his office.

Muskegon High also provided students with written guidelines and a form they must sign to show they understand the dress code before they can purchase prom tickets.

Despite Mireya being kicked out of prom, her mother insisted that they read the school's guidelines and ensured her daughter's dress met them.

Connie noted that she had messaged Perkins to explain to her why her daughter was told to leave prom. "What's done is done. All I wanted is for him to call me and give me an explanation," Connie emphasized.

Mireya also spoke out, explaining what her dress looked like and what happened when she got to prom until she was kicked out.

Mireya Is Kicked Out of Prom for Her Dress

Mireya chose a long, backless, short-sleeved dress from her prom. The dress was blue with white polka dots. Her mother felt her dress was beautiful and appropriate and had followed the school's guidelines.

As per the school's guidelines, backless dresses were acceptable. Connie even revealed that when they went shopping, they ensured the dress they chose followed the school's dress code. "We looked at the rules, and we picked the dress together. I thought she looked beautiful," Connie added.

Mireya went to her boyfriend's prom in a different dress. Her boyfriend attended Reeths-Puffer High School.

So, Mireya went to prom, and she had no problem getting in as she was wearing her boyfriend's jacket because it was cold outside. While at prom, the student took pictures with friends and the cheer coach. She drank punch and hung out with her friends.

However, after an hour at prom, the vice principal approached her and asked her to stand and turn around. When she did this, the vice principal told her, "You have to leave; you're in dress code violation."

According to Connie, Mireya's boyfriend and her date asked the teacher if the student could wear his jacket. However, the teacher said Mireya could only wear her own jacket or go back home and change her dress.

Mireya then left the prom and called her mother from the parking lot. Connie said Mireya got into the car and started crying. Mireya's mother was devastated and wondered why other girls who were wearing dresses like her daughter's and some even more revealing outfits weren't asked to leave:

"Other girls were wearing similar style dresses, like dresses with cutouts and dresses with sheer lining on the midriff. Why were they allowed to stay and my daughter wasn't?"

Two other female students who were asked to leave because of their dresses found something to cover their outfits and returned, but Mireya didn't.

The school also never explained why Mireya was kicked out while other girls with dresses similar to hers were allowed to stay. However, Perkins said, "I feel bad Mireya wasn't able to make it back into the prom."

Mireya also shared this incident on Facebook alongside pictures of herself in a gorgeous prom dress. She said she was kicked out because her dress was too revealing and apologized to her boyfriend because they didn't get to dance or take a picture:

"My senior year of prom was ruined, but I still have his in 2 weeks. I felt pretty, I had my amazing boyfriend on my side & that's all that matters."
