It was half past eight when Ryan, 10, tiptoed out of the school games room. The usually bustling corridors were oddly grave and silent, and he was heading toward the restroom in the senior's block when he heard muffled voices from Principal Wilson's office.

"Principal Wilson is still here?" Ryan peeked inside the room through the slightly ajar door and saw his principal talking to a gang of dangerous-looking men.

"I already sent an innocent person to jail. What more do you want for me?" He saw older Principal Wilson begging the gangsters.

Ryan understood the men were up to something wrong, and Principal Wilson was involved with them. So the young boy discreetly positioned his phone and hid behind the door, recording their entire conversation...

"Everything will be over in two days, Principal Wilson! Just two days! And this town will forever remember us!" a nasty voice boomed from the principal's room, sending chills down Ryan's spine.

Two days later, Principal Wilson was taken into custody. He sat in tears in the interrogation room, his hands cuffed.

"Please believe me, Officer," he pleaded with the detective. "I was set up. I didn't want to do it. They barely left me with a choice."

"There is always a choice, sir," Detective Rudolf remarked, sitting across from him. "Now, how about you tell us everything? Right from the point it all started? Yeah?"

Principal Wilson hung his head, recalling the fateful day that brought him behind bars.

It was a Sunday evening when Principal Wilson's son, Nick, returned home looking defeated.

"Nick? What's wrong, son?" Principal Wilson had just started when several tall, muscular men with tattoos crawling up their arms and necks poured into the house behind Nick.

"Who the hell are you? Nick, who are these people?" Principal Wilson jumped to his feet in shock. Nick looked terrified and didn't utter a word, but a man from the gang—the leader—made himself comfortable on the couch and placed his gun on the living room table.

"Sit down, will you?" He glared at the principal, and the older man gulped, looking from his son to the man.

"Wha—what do you want? Don't hurt my son, please." Principal Wilson stuttered.

The gang leader smirked. "If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time asking questions, principal! Your son lost $5000 to us in a card game last night at a pub."

Principal Wilson heaved a sigh of relief. $5000 was a small amount for getting these men out of the house. But the gang leader wasn't done yet.

"Calm down, Mr. Wilson, will you?" the thug laughed, seeing the scared father pull money from his wallet. "Your son already paid us that money. You do remember that robbery that shook the town, don't you? Well, guess who my accomplice was…your dearest son, Nick!"

Principal Wilson stared at his son in his disbelief. "You do as we say, or else the video of his involvement goes viral."

The thug played the video, and Principal Wilson's blood drained from his face. He couldn't let Nick rot in jail.

"Oh, God! What…what do you want me to do?" he asked, defeated.

"Now that's like a good father, Mr. Wilson," the thug chuckled. "Now, here's the plan." The man asked him for $100,000, but Principal Wilson didn't have that kind of money.

"Well, well, don't worry! We got a plan B!" He then asked Principal Wilson to hand over the school's computer lab's keys so that the gang could rob the new batch of computers that had arrived at school.

Principal Wilson didn't have a choice. He handed them the duplicate keys. And then the surveillance camera password for deleting the robbery footage. But the following day, when he arrived at school, he learned the security guard Joseph was arrested for the robbery.

"Sheriff, listen, there must be some misunderstanding," Principal Wilson said, approaching the cops. He'd guessed the gangsters had something to do with it, but he pretended not to know anything.

"We got an anonymous tip, sir," the officer said. "And we retrieved two boxes of stolen computer accessories from his house."

Before Principal Wilson would say another word, his buzzing phone distracted him.

"Don't you dare open your mouth to the cops, Mr. Wilson," the gang leader's voice appeared on the other end of the line, and Principal Wilson sidled past the sheriff to a quiet corner.

The gang leader warned him that he was watching every move and that if Principal Wilson made one mistake, Nick would end up in jail. To save his son, the principal played along. He felt guilty for sending an innocent Joseph to jail, but there was little he could do.

Principal Wilson was at least relieved the gangsters won't bother him or Nick again. But one day, when he was leaving for an important conference call, the thugs barged into his office and surrounded him.

"What are you doing here? This is my school! Please, go away!" he hissed.

The gang leader laughed. "Lower your voice, respected principal! Even walls have ears. You don't want everyone to know what you did, do you? You gotta do something for us, or our lips won't be sealed!"

"I already sent an innocent man to jail. What more do you want from me?" Principal Wilson asked angrily.

"Well, well, my boys hit the jackpot in town tonight...at the antique store. The cops are on high alert, so we need someone to help us escape this place undetected. You're a respected man, aren't you? So nobody can do this job better. They won't suspect you. And yeah, just so you don't act too smart, your son Nick will ride with us in the same car until we're out of this town."

Principal Wilson sank onto his chair, feeling helpless. He listened to the thugs' plan and nodded hesitantly. "I hope this will be the last favor I'm doing," he said, not even looking up.

"You're one hell of a businessman, SIR! Of course!" The gang laughed and left. Principal Wilson burst into silent sobs, looking at his son's photo. After his wife's death, Nick was all he had, and he would go to any length to save his son.

So as per the plan, on the fateful Friday night, Principal Wilson pulled over his minivan outside the children's park and waited for the gangsters and his son. He snapped to the moment as three gangsters jumped into his van with the loot and Nick.

"Drive! What are you waiting for?!" One of the men ordered, and Principal Wilson hastily drove away. The men, Nick, and the loot were obscured with blankets in the backseat, and Principal Wilson had stashed empty cardboard boxes on them to make it appear he was driving with household items in the backseat.

Principal Wilson was careful enough and took the diversion to the rundown road passing through the woods, though it wasn't a part of the plan. He knew it was his only way to drive the thugs out of town without falling in the cops' eyes at the main checkposts.

But Principal Wilson's fate wasn't on his side, and as he looked up suddenly, he saw cops checking vehicles passing through the checkpost bordering the woods.

"Please step out of your vehicle, sir," an officer approached Principal Wilson's van and asked him to lower the car window. "We need to check it."

"Oh, Sergeant Davidson!" he forced a grin. "Didn't you recognize me? I'm the district school's principal. I taught your son! You know me!"

But the officer remained hostile and insisted Principal Wilson get out of the van. With a feigned gesture, Principal Wilson pretended to open the van door, and just as the officer stepped back, he slammed hard on the gas pedal, launching the minivan forward with full throttle.

The vehicle plunged into the muddy path, breaking the barrier at the checkpost. The startled cops ran after the minivan while some alerted the control room and checkposts in all directions.

Principal Wilson didn't know where he was heading and kept accelerating faster. Eventually, he lost control of the wheel and rammed into a tree with a deafening crash.

The last thing he saw before passing out was a fresh trail of crimson oozing on the deployed airbag due to the deadly collision. And the last thing he heard was deadly cries emanating from the backseat, especially his son's.

"...And that's how it happened, officer," he finished narrating the incident to Detective Rudolf. Then he looked out the window in the corridor and saw Joseph's handcuffs being removed.

"Oh, that boy!" he cried as he saw Ryan running up to Joseph and hugging him. "He's a third-grade pupil in my school."

Right then, an officer entered the interrogation room and whispered something into Detective Rudolf's ears.

"Uh, well, that boy is the security guard's grandson, Principal Wilson, who brought us evidence against you," Detective Rudolf cleared his throat. "By the way, I'm afraid we have bad news. We just received word from the hospital, and your son, Nick…He died."
