Chris Colfer on His Gay Role in 'Glee' & Fear of Coming Out
Colfer, who hails from Clovis, California, played an openly gay character in "Glee" when he was yet to come out in real life. In a November 2022 interview during an episode of the podcast "And That's What You Really Missed" podcast, he revealed why he was afraid of coming out:
"So, my hometown has come very far in the last couple of decades, but when I was growing up there, it was dangerous to be out. Kids would get beat up. [...] So, being out and proud was just not an option."
The author, whose "Glee" co-star Kevin McHale is also gay, divulged that he was ecstatic when he learned they had written the role for him. However, that feeling changed once he knew he would play a gay character. "I was terrified, said Colfer.
He played the Kurt role for six seasons, which became an essential touchstone for the LGBTQ community regarding representation at the time.
However, in the real world of show business, Colfer was called all sorts of names at auditions for coming out, especially by people in the industry.
Hence, he said when one decides to come out publicly, it can put their safety and career at risk. But regardless, he encourages those who want to come out to do it and be free.
