Emily Hampshire Comes Out as Pansexual
Several years after her divorce from Smith, Emily Hampshire came out as pansexual in a May 2019 Instagram post. She posted a clip from the sitcom "Schitt's Creek" wherein she played Stevie Budd alongside Dan Levy, who portrayed David Rose.
In the video, the two were discussing different types of wine, and her character told Rose she prefers red wine, adding the day before, she thought he, too, liked red wine because she realized that was not the case.
He responded, "I see where you're going with this. Um... I do drink red wine, but I also drink white wine. And I've been known to sample the occasional rose."
Her character interjected and stated that meant he was into all wines, to which Rose replied, "I like the wine and not the label. Does that make sense?" And she said, "Yes, it does."
In her caption, Hampshire explained that years before shooting this particular scene, she had no idea what pansexuality was, adding:
"CUT TO: 5 years later, I find myself regularly explaining my own pansexuality to people with, It's like, I'm into the wine, not the label."
Hampshire opened up more about her sexuality in a June 2021 interview, saying she was happy to be a role model for the LGBTQ+ community but does not label herself not keen on being considered an icon:
"I could never. I'm Canadian, I could never see myself [that way], or say that I am an icon within this space."
