The new era for James Gunn's "Superman" officially began with a new face portraying Clark Kent and Lois Lane. However, supporters of the franchise expressed their displeasure with the new cast.

After a long search, James Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran ultimately found their new Superman/Clark Kent in David Corenswet and Lois Lane in Rachel Brosnahan to headline "Superman: Legacy." The hunt concluded after filming screen tests over the weekend of June 17, with Gunn confirming the news in a tweet.

Nicholas Hoult and Tom Brittney reportedly contended for the leading role, while Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor vied for the role of "Daily Planet" reporter Lane.

Corenswet is set to be the fourth actor to don the cape on the big screen, following Christopher Reeve in 1978's "Superman," Brandon Routh in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," and Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel."

However, fans were skeptical about the casting. One Facebook user opined, "I have no great love for Superman, but if they have no plans to involve Cavill, and just got a younger replacement that looks like him, that's insulting and makes me care even less about this film."

Another DC enthusiast quipped, "That's like Great Value Superman." At the same time, someone else posted, "Rachel is the perfect Lois Lane, but Cavill, IMO, is the only one fit to wear the cape worn to perfection by Chris Reeve. Period!"

Yet, a few fans were willing to keep an open mind. "He has the look, she isn't conventionally pretty and neither was Margot Kidder, so let's give them both a chance," one fan remarked, while another hoped Corenswet and Brosnahan wouldn't regret joining the DC universe.

Gunn and Safran's franchise takeover caused a stir when they officially parted ways with Cavill in December 2022, contrary to earlier reports of his return. Insiders divulged that the pair allegedly looked for a younger face, leading to Cavill's exit.
