Robert de Niro’s Grandson Found Dead Sitting in Chair: Boy ‘Didn’t Deserve to Die like This,’ Mom Says
On July 3, 2023, Robert De Niro's adopted daughter took to Instagram to announce that her 19-year-old son had passed away. She shared her heartache that her beloved son had passed on so early.
Robert De Niro's grandson, Leandro De Niro, passed away over the weekend, with his mother Drena De Niro sharing the news on Instagram. The young man's death was announced just weeks after his grandfather welcomed his seventh child.
As tributes to the family poured in and fans shared their condolences with the family, Drena grieved privately without sharing any further news. Until now, there had been no news about how or where Leandro died.
Law enforcement officials revealed what they believe to be the cause of death after Leandro was found sitting in a chair in a one-bedroom apartment at the Cipriani Club Residences on Wall Street.
Initially, a friend was concerned when he hadn't heard from Leandro in a couple of days. He went to check on him but found him dead. Law enforcement officers did not see any obvious signs leading to his death.
However, a later examination revealed that Leandro was surrounded by drugs and drug paraphernalia when he was found. Leandro's death is now being investigated as an overdose.
Since her first post, Drena has shared another. She shared a black and white photo of her laughing son on Instagram and expressed her feelings, saying:
"You didn’t deserve to die like this, but I can only believe that God needed a strong, powerful angel in their army."
Grandpa De Niro Seen for the First Time Since Leandro's Death
After Leandro's passing, his grandfather released a statement saying he was "deeply distressed" that his grandson had passed away. He added that while the family appreciated the outpouring of love and condolences they had received, they would appreciate privacy during this difficult time.
That evening, De Niro was seen out for the first time since his grandson passed away. He was spotted at a funeral home in New York City wearing a cap and surgical face mask.
De Niro was not alone. He was accompanied by his daughter, Drena, and Leandro's father, Carlos Rodriguez. The trio arrived at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home just streets away from De Niro's apartment.
Drena shared statements from her family on Instagram, saying how shocked they were at Leandro's death and how much they loved and would miss him now that he has passed away.

How Does De Niro Keep the Family Together?
Although De Niro has seven children and several grandchildren, he shares a special bond with each of them and is considered the reason that the family remains so close even though there are so many members.

De Niro adopted Drena as a little girl when he married her mother, Diahnne Abbot, in 1976. Drena then took De Niro's surname, and the pair formed an unbreakable bond. Talking about how he keeps his family close, De Niro shared:
“I try to keep us all together as a family. Have things to do together. Have everybody have awareness of the family thing, so they look after each other, especially after I’m not around anymore. It’s a fragmented family. But I try my best to keep everybody together.”
Some of the things that Drena and her father have done together include working on films. Drena is an actress and a singer and has worked with her father on "Joy" and "Hands of Stone."
According to Drena, her father has always had a knack for separating his personal and professional life. Drena has confirmed that she has learned how to do this because of her father and values all the lessons he has taught her and her siblings throughout their lives. She knows that no matter how much of her life is public, she has something to protect at her core.
