Man Goes to a Festival — He Finds Himself Buried Alive ‘As a Sacrifice’ the Next Morning
Víctor Hugo Mica Alvarez had a wild night out drinking at the Mother Earth Festival and woke up the next day in a coffin. The 30-year-old was convinced he was used as a human sacrifice, but police found his theory hard to believe.
Víctor Hugo Mica Alvarez, 30, attended the Mother Earth Festival in El Alto, Bolivia, but woke up horrified at what had happened to him the next day.
Alvarez was at the opening of the festival and had a bit too much to drink. To his surprise, he found himself 50 miles away inside a casket in Achacachi.
The Mother Earth Festival is based around giving thanks to Pachamama, a goddess of earth and fertility. During the month of August, Indigenous Bolivians give the goddess offerings, also known as "sullu."
It is believed that Pachamama "opens her mouth" when given offerings, and these can include anything from sheep, eggs, cocoa leaves, and sweets.
The ceremony is reportedly a way to give thanks to Mother Earth after giving to humanity. To thank Her, the followers burn wood with animal fat and sweets. However, it is believed that a ceremony of human sacrifices is held in secret.

Knowing what goes down at the festival and waking up 50 miles from where he started the night, Alvarez was shocked to realize that he was buried alive.
Alvarez's Reaction to Waking Up in a Coffin
After his drinking bender the night before, Alvarez confessed that he did not remember anything. What he did remember was waking up thinking he was in the bedroom and needing to urinate. But he quickly realized he was in a confined space and could not move.

The 30-year-old explained how he was able to escape. He said, "When I pushed the coffin, I was able to break a glass that it had, and that way, I was able to get out."
His hands were hurt from the glass, and he complained about how much his body ached. Alvarez came out of the coffin, certain he had been offered as a human sacrifice. "They wanted to use me as a sullu," he added.

During his interview, Alvarez looked confused and shocked. His clothes were covered in dust; he had blood stains on his forehead and a swollen eye. He looked like he was trying hard to tell reporters what happened while also trying to figure out how he ended up in this position.
After escaping the coffin, he went straight to the police. However, the police reportedly did not believe him and thought he was too drunk to know why he actually ended up in a coffin. But despite the terror, Alvarez came out of his wild night alive.
