Boy Hears Mom Crying "Please Help Me," Races Downstairs & Sacrifices Own Life To Save Her

Katarzyna Bastek was on the phone with a friend when an intruder let himself in. She heard a noise behind her and saw a man standing with his back against a wall, staring at her blankly.

Bastek immediately knew who the intruder was, even with a surgical mask covering his face. It was Suleman Altaf, who had been stalking her home for several hours before finally finding a way to enter.

"Please, I beg you, don't do nothing wrong (sic)," the mom-of-four implored. Bastek instantly recognized Altaf because the pair had dated previously. They were together since 2012 and eventually split in 2015 when things got toxic.

Bastek and Altaf first met in 2012 through the Internet. The young mom was still living in Poland before moving to the UK to be with Altaf. The ex-couple shared a son. After their split, he didn't have custody over the boy and resented his ex for it.

After repeated cries for mercy, Altaf lunged at Bastek and stabbed her repeatedly. The panicked mom yelled at her friend to call the police as she struggled for her life.

As she yelled for the man to leave her alone, she suddenly called for her son Jakub, who was upstairs when the attack happened. "Kuba, please help me!" she cried out.

What Did Jakub Do to Help His Mom?

Upon hearing his mom, Jakub ran down and saw a horrific scene. Bastek was bleeding heavily from her stomach, and her head was bleeding. The boy could instantly identify the attacker after seeing him with the bloodied knife in his hand. The blank stare was one he's seen around the house for years.

Jakub lunged at the man, hoping to protect his mom. Instead, Altaf punched the teenager in the face, and he fell to the floor. Moments later, Altaf did the unthinkable. He returned to the living room, where he shoved Bastek with a smile. "I can leave you now," he said smugly.

Fearing the worst, Bastek crawled toward the hallway and was devastated at what she saw. Jakub stood in the bathroom before turning to look at his mom. Slowly, he sank to the floor, choking on blood.

Struggling, Bastek moved towards her son as he slowly closed his eyes. "Kuba, open your eyes," she begged. "Don't close them, please!" Jakub lost consciousness before help arrived. By the time their family members came home, Altaf was already on the run.

What Did The Murderer Do Next?

Altaf headed home before driving south to get on a dinghy in the English Channel. He was spotted the following day and asked to surrender to authorities. The man initially planned to sail to France before heading to Portugal. Instead, he abandoned his plan and agreed to surrender to the police in Manchester.

Bastek was rushed to the hospital following the traumatizing incident. She had wounds to her face, chest, and stomach, complicated by a collapsed lung. Altaf was given life imprisonment for Jakub's murder. Despite the fitting sentence, Bastek admitted there was nothing more painful than losing a son:

"Losing a child is difficult for any mother to bear. He came into my house to hurt me, this, he did, not only physically but also the horrific injuries he inflicted on an innocent 15-year-old boy, which resulted in his death."

Jakub wanted to become a builder. The family recalled that the boy was filled with dreams and aspirations. After the incident, Bastek keeps a lock on the house door, and her sons routinely check to see whether the safety features are in place. To them, Kuba is a hero who offered his life to save his mom.

Last December 2022, a selfless 10-year-old boy saved three kids from drowning in a frozen lake before losing his life. He was hailed as a hero by his community for the way he courageously stepped up to save others.
