No breakup is ever easy, especially when there are other people involved. It becomes extra tricky when an ex maintains a strong relationship with their estranged partner's family.

A woman found herself in a frustrating situation after discovering her parents had financially supported her ex-boyfriend for five years after they had broken up. They had dated for over a decade, and he became a part of the woman's family during their time together.

It was the kind of love they thought would never end – the woman thought she and her boyfriend would be together forever. So, when the two broke up, the whole family was stunned.

The two people most affected by the breakup were the woman's parents. They were devasted, as they loved her ex-boyfriend like their own child. At first, no one knew that the pair broke up because the woman had met someone else. While it wasn't love at first sight, she couldn't deny the connection between her and the new man.

At first, she detached herself from her long-term boyfriend before her feelings became too strong, and she eventually decided to end things. The breakup was hard on everyone, but it hit her parents the hardest.

"They didn't understand how I could leave someone whom they thought was perfect for me," she explained. Despite everything she insisted she had to follow her heart, and they let the issue go. At least, that's what she thought. Five years after the breakup, she discovered something infuriating: her parents had supported her ex-boyfriend financially after they split up.

She knew the reason they kept giving money was because they felt guilty about how she left him for another man.

The woman met with her parents to confront him on why they were still in contact with her ex. She was in disbelief, given she'd moved on with her life and hadn't spoken to the man in five years. She tried to understand why her parents felt obliged to help her ex-boyfriend. They explained that they "felt like they owed him because he had been such a wonderful boyfriend."

Her parents also revealed that the man was in a difficult situation financially, and they didn't want to see him suffer. To the woman, these were all cover-ups. She knew the reason they kept giving money was because they felt guilty about how she left him for another man.

The woman felt betrayed. As parents, she thought they'd supported her decision, although they didn't necessarily agree with it. She ranted:

Deep inside, what frustrated the woman most was that she felt he didn't deserve it. "What had he done to deserve financial support for the last five years?" she asked.

The woman admitted that she had paid for everything in their twelve years as a couple. Even the most basic things like groceries and rent, she had offered to pay on his behalf. Ultimately, she wished her parents had known this so they didn't feel obliged to give him any monetary support.

The woman sought answers online asking whether or not she was being unreasonable for arguing with her parents. All she wanted was to understand why they seemed to value her ex-boyfriend more than they valued her.
