A woman excitedly planned her big day but remained unsure for months whether she wanted her dad to walk her down the aisle. After a hit-and-run three years prior, her dad was paralyzed from the waist down and could no longer walk.

Her dad broke several bones yet powered through. He uses a wheelchair and is doing well despite his injuries.

The woman and her dad always had a good relationship. She claims her indecisiveness regarding her wedding was because she didn't like seeing her dad in pain.

She said she admittedly avoided seeing him frequently because it made her uncomfortable. Even her fiancé of four years got along well with her father.

When the discussion of who'd walk her down the aisle came up in their family group chat, she remained mum. She'd always looked forward to her dad giving her away and dancing with her at the wedding, but she didn't want to be reminded of what could've been if her dad didn't get into an accident.

The Woman Chose Her Uncle to Walk Her Down the Aisle

Without saying anything in the group chat, the woman told her mom that she chose her uncle to walk her down the aisle as they were close.

Her mom asked why she decided on her uncle, and she explained how her dad being in a wheelchair would complicate things. They'd have to widen the walkway to accommodate her dad's wheelchair, he wouldn't be able to hold her arm as they walked, and he wouldn't be able to give her a proper hug – those were the woman's reasons.

The woman's mom was enraged. She called her daughter an ableist and disowned her by removing her from their family group chat.

Aside from her mother, her aunt called and said her dad was "absolutely devastated." After ruining her relationships with the entire family, she sought opinions online.

People slammed her for how she treated her dad, siding with the woman's family. They said her narrative didn't make sense, as she only hurt her dad further by alienating him.

Internet Users' Reactions

The woman couldn't believe how many people responded to her story. People messaged her privately over her decision, and she assured them she'd talk to her father about what happened.

"If I was your fiance, I'd take this as a sign that our wedding vows would only be good until I had an accident and got disabled - then I could bet on you abandoning me because of your shallowness," one user said.

"If I found out my fiancé did this, I would call off the wedding and dump them," another agreed.

"Millions of people would die to have a father be a good man and alive to share this day with," someone noted.

Several other internet users rallied behind the woman's fiancé and how he should re-think his decision to marry the woman. A user concluded:

"You avoid him because it is hard on you? What about him? Now you don't want to accommodate him to walk you down the aisle? God, you should be ashamed of yourself. Your fiance should take a long look at who he is marrying."

People wondered where the woman's fiancé was while this was happening. They realized her reaction to her dad's disability was a big red flag and asked what she'd do if her future husband ended up in the same situation.

After a while, the woman gave the most surprising update. She apologized to her dad, and they decided to give their relationship a second try.

However, she also revealed that her wedding would not be pushing through. She and her boyfriend separated after the whole ordeal, changing the course of the woman's life forever.
