Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton have a close relationship that goes back to the "Hannah Montana" star's father. The country legend is the godmother of Cyrus. Parton said she became the singer's godmother due to her closeness to her dad, Billy Ray.

Over the years, Cyrus and Parton have been there for each other, spoken lovingly about their relationship, and supported each other's careers. In 2019, the "I Will Always Love You" singer narrated how Cyrus became her goddaughter.

Parton said she worked a lot with Billy Ray when he released "Achy Breaky Heart" and collaborated on some shows they did back then. Billy Ray opened some of Parton's shows, and they got to know each other. She even featured him in a video of one of the songs she wrote, "Romeo."

When Cyrus was born, Parton and Billy Ray just said the "Wrecking Ball" singer would have to be Parton's fairy goddaughter. The pair have a great godmother-goddaughter relationship that they even acted together on "Hannah Montana," a Disney sitcom.

How Parton and Cyrus Have Supported Each Other over the Years

Parton was asked to guest star in "Hannah Montana" after Cyrus recommended her. The country singer felt nice being there as Cyrus' fairy godmother. She enjoyed sharing the platform with her goddaughter and spending time with her and noted that they worked really well:

"For me, watching her being such a pro, she didn't know it, but I was watching her like a proud mama, thinking, you go, you little thing, I am so proud of you, and I have always been so proud of Miley, she's so talented."

The "Jolene" singer said she got lots of new young fans following her and listening to her music thanks to Cyrus' influence. Young people who were fans of the Disney show, artists on the show, and Cyrus' fans all followed Parton.

In March 2022, Cyrus shared via her Instagram that the plane she was in was caught in a major unexpected storm and struck by lightning on her way to South America.

Parton also supported Cyrus when she did sensational and spectacular things to break away from her "Hannah Montana" image. Cyrus wanted to be herself, but the world wouldn't let her as they were so used to the young girl on the Disney show.

However, Parton said a determined Cyrus resorted to extreme measures, which many people didn't like, but that she pulled it off and became a pop star. The country singer hit back at people who were complaining about all the things Cyrus has done in her career, including rebranding herself.

Parton said Cyrus was just like her because she was doing all these things to find her own space. She added that she doesn't always have to agree with the "Flowers" singer but that she'll always love her. When Cyrus did her version of "Jolene" in her concerts, Parton supported her and said she saw her singing it really well on TV.

Cyrus has also had positive things to say about her godmother. She noted that Parton has taught her how to treat people really well and say hi to individuals who are easily ignored. Parton has kept Cyrus grounded even when the fame and money came at a young age.

When Parton was awarded "MusiCares Person of the Year," the "The Climb" singer said her godmother was a kind person and someone she has looked up to as a woman in the entertainment industry. Parton has also taught Cyrus not to judge people by their outward looks. The singer also pointed out that some of their best moments are when she sings "Jolene" with Parton at concerts.

Cyrus has learned from Parton not just by what she told her but by what she has done. The singer said her godmother had taught her not to be afraid through the way Parton doesn't hesitate to laugh at herself and push the boundaries for country music. She added that there was no one who had been able to make country music more sexual than her godmother.

The "We Can't Stop" singer has also shared hilarious moments between her and Parton. One time, Cyrus told Parton she wanted to change the color of her hair. Cyrus noted that Parton looked so scared when she told her this that it felt like she had given her the worst news ever.

Cyrus never got to dye her hair. Parton told her she couldn't do it because then she wouldn't look like her. Cyrus recalled Parton telling her, "You can't do that. You are me," and the younger singer concluded, "So I'm somehow some extension of Dolly Parton," and she kept her blond hair.

Parton and Cyrus are so close that the country singer wanted her goddaughter to play Jolene in a project about her song "Jolene." Netflix released the anthology series "Dolly Parton's Heartstrings" in 2019. Unfortunately, Cyrus couldn't play Jolene because she was doing other things at the time. In March 2022, Cyrus shared via her Instagram that the plane she taking was caught in a major unexpected storm and struck by lightning on her way to South America. "My crew, band, friends, and family who were all traveling with me are safe after an emergency landing," she wrote.

The singer apologized to her fans and said she wouldn't be able to fly to Paraguay, where she was headed to a music festival. The pop star shared a scary video alongside her message, which showed her cabin window and the turbulence outside.

Cyrus' sister, Brandi Cyrus, was also on the plane. She shared a video saying, "I'm going to try not to be dramatic, but we almost died." Another passenger on the plane posted a video showing lightning flashing outside the plane's window.

Cyrus, her crew, band, friends, and family landed safely because the pilot made a quick decision to make an emergency landing. The singer, who said the experience was terrifying, didn't reach her destination that day, but she was safe after a close touch with death.
