Ayo Edebiri's Parents Had Advice When They Learned of Her Wanting a Comedy Career – Meet Helen & Dele Edebiri

Ayo Edebiri's parents are immigrants from different countries. Although not in the entertainment industry, they are proud of their daughter's career and once gave her advice about becoming a comedian.

Actress and stand-up comedian Ayo Edebiri has been making waves in the entertainment scene. She receives much support from her parents, who have been open to her career since she was in college.

Ayo Edebiri, who has a similar personality as her dad, is Helen Edebiri and Dele Edebiri's only child. Although her parents keep a low profile, there are some known details about their lives.

Ayo Edebiri's Parents Are Christian Immigrants

Helen and Dele Edebiri are both immigrants, with her hailing from Barbados and him from Nigeria. Although they only have one child, the couple have a large extended family. They also have a family in their church as devout Christians.

They raised Ayo in a religious Pentecostal home, ensuring that the comedy she watched was Christian-related. Despite restrictions, Ayo said her upbringing was not "a rigid experience without joy or anything just because there were rules."

Helen Edebiri and Dele Edebiri Are Private People

There are not many details publicly disclosed about Ayo's parents. However, it is known that Helen was a social worker while Dele worked for the state of Massachusetts.

The couple leads a private life and rarely makes public appearances. However, they used to be featured on Ayo's Instagram posts years back. In 2018, the duo's daughter shared a glimpse of their family during Christmas alongside a funny caption. She also shared photos in 2019, writing:

"Believe it or not… Dele initiated the poses!"

Ayo would also share throwback photos, funny conversations, and tributes on occasions like Father's Day. Dele has his own Instagram profile but rarely posts pictures.

As of writing, he has only shared two photos on the social media platform. However, in the comments section of his daughter's post, he once admitted, "I don't even know how to use this medium."

Helen Edebiri and Dele Edebiri Support Their Daughter's Career

Although Ayo chose a path different from her parents, Helen and Dele supported their daughter's career. Still, Helen doesn't laugh much at Ayo's jokes unless it has a Bible reference.

Helen and Dele's daughter wanted to do comedy at a young age. As Ayo recalled, she tried doing improv and immediately liked it. However, she didn't tell her parents and instead focused on the idea of being a doctor for about eight years.

It wasn't until she was in her senior year of high school that she mustered the courage to tell her parents she wanted to be a comedian. Fortunately, her parents didn't object. When she finally decided to pursue the craft, Helen and Dele advised her well.

"My parents are very practical people, and they told me, 'If this comedy thing is an actual career and a job that you want, then you have to treat it like that,'" Ayo shared. Ayo has since taken every opportunity to perform.

She has been making strides in her career, appearing in AppleTV+'s "Dickson" and writing for Netflix's "Mulligan." Ayo Edebiri focuses much on her career as she is not in a relationship. However, she once revealed she wanted to date a 40-year-old.
