Man Gives Woman a Ride Home, Her Husband and Brothers Come To Him Few Days Later – Story of the Day
Peter gives his secretary a lift after they end up working late. He thinks it's just a good gesture. But his kindness lands Peter in big trouble when her husband and brothers come to his house days later.
Peter often worked long hours as the marketing head of his father-in-law's firm. It was late, and all his employees had left. But when he was passing the hallway, all ready to go home, Peter noticed his secretary Eliza's cubicle was still lit.
Then it struck him that he had been so engrossed in preparing the reports for the board meeting that he had forgotten Eliza was helping him out.
"I'm the most terrible boss, aren't I?" Peter sighed as he leaned against her cubicle.
"I'm almost done," she smiled, gathering her things. "Actually, could you do me a favor? I could use a ride home. I tried booking an Uber, but no luck!"
"Sure," Peter agreed, as it was because of him that she was working until now...

"Thanks for the ride!" Eliza smiled, buckling her seatbelt. "The reports should be done by the week's end."
"Do you always just talk about work?" Peter chuckled as he started the car. "I know you're one of the most dedicated employees in the company, Eliza. But let's keep work to the office, yes?"
Eliza was five years younger than Peter and a very sweet girl. While several men in the office tried to seduce her, she always maintained a respectful distance from all her male colleagues, sharing very little of her life with them. But Peter…was different.
He made her feel so comfortable that she quickly opened up to him. Soon, they were chatting like good old friends, exchanging jokes and even discussing their colleagues.
"Well, you're not what I expected you to be," Peter said. "You sound...like an incredible person."
"Was that a compliment?" she laughed. "I'll take it anyway. Thanks. You're also very different…and quite attractive."

"The same goes for you…" Peter trailed off. But his and Eliza's eyes locked briefly before Peter turned his attention to the road. Ten minutes later, they were at Eliza's place.
"This is the house, right?" he asked.
"Why don't you come in and check?" she replied, looking at him.
"I think you should leave, Eliza," Peter averted his gaze. "I-I need to be home."
"You want me to leave? Really, Peter?"
There was an awkward pause as they locked eyes again. The next moment, Eliza was in his lap, kissing him. Peter couldn't resist her at first. But seconds later, he pushed her onto the passenger seat.

"No! We-we can't do this! I've got a wife...and I love her! Please leave!" He opened the car door for her. "Have a good evening!"
"I'm-I'm sorry. Yeah, uh, you too…" Eliza replied hastily and got down.
Peter drove away immediately, and minutes later, he was home. He cursed himself for the stupidity he was about to commit as he grabbed the coffee cake from the backseat.
"Hey, honey—" he started as his wife opened the door, but before he could finish, she cut him off.
"You finally remembered you have a home and a wife?" Amanda sneered, crossing her arms.
"I'm sorry, honey. It's just this report—" Before he could hug her, she marched inside angrily.
"It's got to stop, Peter! You come home late every day!" she yelled as they stopped in the living room.

"I know, honey, and I'm sorry. It's just the workload…it's driving me insane."
"Give me a good reason why I should forgive you! And don't you dare bring up work again!" she barked.
"Will this work?" He lifted the cake box. "We can always fight later! I called the cafe and asked them to make it for my lovely wife…The coffee cake, your favorite."
Amanda was furious, but she softened a little. She approached Peter for a hug, but it wasn't long before she scrunched her nose in disgust. "Are you cheating on me?" Amanda sniffed his shirt and was sure she caught a whiff of a female's perfume.
Blood drained off Peter's face as he recalled the car scene and Eliza. Two years ago, Peter was indeed cheating on Amanda, and their marriage was headed for a divorce. But Peter couldn't afford history repeating itself, so he told her he had given his jacket to a female colleague who was cold.
Amanda didn't believe his story, though.
"I don't believe you!" she said, looking away. "Just tell me if there's another woman involved!"

"Hey, hey, I'm not cheating on you, OK?" He cupped her face and looked her in the eye. "You can check the CCTV at work. I was in the office all day, and when I got off work, I returned home to my wife! I love you!"
Amanda didn't totally accept Peter's story, but she felt more at ease when he asked her to check the cameras at work.
Several days passed. One night, Amanda and Peter were watching a baseball game together, her head resting on his shoulder. Suddenly, Peter's phone buzzed with a message.
"Come out! Don't tell your wife anything!"
Peter frowned. Who was this unknown number texting him at this hour? He almost jumped to his feet, but Amanda was right beside him. He checked on her. She was in a deep sleep while the TV blared in front of her.
Peter balanced her head on the backrest of the couch and went outside. A group of burly men stood in his driveway.

"Who the hell are you guys, and what are you doing on my property?" he asked angrily as he ran down the steps.
A man stepped forward and scanned him from head to toe. "You gave my wife a lift a few days ago. They are her brothers!" he said, jerking his thumb over his shoulder to point at the other guys. "We've come to settle scores!"
"What—Eliza?" Peter gasped. "You're Eliza's husband?"
"Good that you remember stuff…Now, did something else happen that day?" the man asked.
"Something else?" Peter swallowed thickly. "I-I don't know what you're talking about! I just dropped her home!"
"Look at you cooking up stories!" the man scoffed. "But I've got a better one! Take a look!" Peter's gut twisted with strange anxiety as the man showed Peter pictures of how he was making out with Eliza only a few days ago.
"$200,000, and this stays with us, or your wife learns how 'faithful' you've been," the man warned him. "So…do you think you can save your marriage?"

Fear gripper Peter. He knew Amanda would never believe him if he told her he had eventually pushed Eliza away. Peter had no choice but to give in to the demands.
"I-I'll get the sum," he sighed in defeat. "But please, I need time!"
The men gave Peter a week to arrange the money and left. Peter returned home and sat alone in his study, contemplating the next move. After paying off the house mortgage, the savings were gone. He didn't have a friend who could loan him such a big sum, and if he asked the bank for a loan, Amanda would find out everything.
So the next day, Peter stopped by his company's chief accountant's office. Peter and Will were good friends and colleagues, so Peter was going to leverage his connection to swindle the company's company.
"I don't have to remind you that's a crime, Peter!" Will said sternly after Peter asked him to write a check worth $220,000.

"Come on, man. Just this one time," Peter whispered, leaning against the table. "And yeah, you keep the $20,000. I'll cover it for you…And I promise I'll get all the money as soon as possible!"
Will relented after much persuasion. But Peter could've never guessed that Eliza was right outside the door, eavesdropping on his conversation with Will. After receiving the check, Peter drove to the bank to get the money. Then he left a text to Eliza's husband, Arnold, and they decided to meet at a cafe.
When Peter arrived, Arnold was already seated at a window table. He slid onto the seat across from Arnold.
"I have the cash. Delete the photos!" Peter told him, but Arnold laughed.
"I know you defrauded your company, Peter!"
"What difference does it make? You have the money, so delete the photos!"
"Oh, it does make a big difference!" Arnold smirked. "What if I ratted you out? You'd be in prison! So…let's clean this mess, alright? Help me and my boys rob your father-in-law's house. That old man founded your company, so he'll have some good money at home, won't he?"

Peter was shocked. He couldn't do this. But Peter also knew that if he didn't, he would lose Amanda, his job, and his entire life. So he agreed.
He assured Arnold that he would disable the alarm system at his father-in-law's house on the night of the robbery. However, Peter still needed to find a means to keep his father-in-law out of the house. Moreover, Arnold had asked Peter to accompany him to the robbery.
"What's wrong, honey? You look tired!" Peter slumped on the couch as he arrived home, feeling exhausted. He couldn't face Amanda after what had happened, so he told her he was tired and began leaving.
"But Peter, what about Dad's birthday? It's coming in two weeks, and I want you to be there!"
Amanda's words stopped Peter in his tracks. A brilliant idea crossed his mind. He decided to send his in-laws and his wife to Miami for a three-day vacation, and by the time they returned, Peter would've cleaned the mess!
"What? No way, Peter! I'm not going alone! And Dad will notice you're missing!" Amanda exclaimed. "I thought we had agreed that family is the most important thing!"

"Honey, come on, he's a businessman. He understands the importance of my job! And he'll just love it when you surprise him with a three-day trip to Miami! You can't get him a better gift!"
Finally, Amanda agreed, and Peter heaved a sigh of relief. He did feel bad about what he was doing, but he consoled himself by saying it would all be worth it.
Two weeks later, Peter was at the airport, dropping off Amanda and her parents.
"Is everything fine, honey? You seem tense," Amanda noticed Peter looked nervous. And she was right because it was the night Peter would help Arnold in the robbery.
"Oh no…It-it's nothing," He wrapped her in a hug. "Just going to miss you. Have a fun trip!"
"You're too eager to send me away!" Amanda teased him, and Peter went pale for a moment. However, he convinced her everything was fine.
Soon, Amanda and her parents disappeared through the airport crowd. Peter waited until he saw them heading to the check-in, then turned around and left. What he didn't know was Amanda never checked in for the flight. She sensed something was off, so she followed him.

That night, a van pulled onto the street across from Peter's father-in-law's house. Peter exited the vehicle first, his face obscured by a mask, and disabled the alarm system. Then Arnold and his men joined him.
"Any cameras in here?" Arnold asked.
"Only in the front yard, but they don't work," Peter explained.
Arnold and his guys took off their masks. Then they followed Peter's directions to the gold and jewels in the house and began dumping whatever valuables they found in their bags. Suddenly, Arnold heard the front door click open.
He pulled out his gun and motioned for everyone to be silent as he hid behind a door on the first floor, opposite the front entrance. When he heard footsteps on the stairs to the second floor, he jumped out from behind the door, his gun drawn.

Arnold thought the intruder was a man…until the person turned around.
"Please! Don't kill me!" Amanda cried.
Peter didn't know what he was thinking as soon as he saw Amanda, but he raced up to Arnold and knocked the gun out of his hands. But in the moment of tension, a gunshot rang out. Arnold accidentally pulled the trigger. Amanda plopped to the floor and passed out.
Except for Peter, all the robbers fled the house with the loot, terrified for their lives. Peter raced to Amanda and scooped her head in his lap.
"Hey, honey, wake up!" he said tremblingly. "You'll… you'll be fine, Amanda! I'm… I'm dialing 911!"
