A woman took to Reddit to explain what happened after she decided to tie the knot with her boyfriend. Before jumping to the main story, the 28-year-old shared a bit about her parents' relationship.

Years ago, her mother left her father when she was pregnant because he wanted her to quit her job and be a stay-at-home wife, while the woman wanted to pursue a PhD to help children with a specific condition. The Redditor mentioned that her father was rich enough not to work because his income was sourced through a trust fund.

Once her mother divorced him, she didn't get much money because of their prenup. She moved to another country and devoted her life to raising their daughter. The woman had a good job that allowed her to provide her daughter with a comfortable lifestyle.

The Redditor's paternal grandparents had no idea about her existence, while her maternal grandparents loved her and treated her well whenever she visited them in Canada during the summers. She also revealed:

"My father never paid the child support he should have. Like I said, it didn't really matter. My mom makes good money, and she gave me a great life as a child."

The Redditor only spoke to her father when she decided to tie the knot with her 31-year-old fiancé, whom she met while studying at her university. She thought he was a great man and couldn't imagine marrying someone else besides him.

She revealed that her fiancé's parents were from the same city as her father, leading to her paternal grandparents learning about her existence and her wedding. When they realized what their son had done years ago, they were furious and wanted him to pay for his mistake.

What Did Her Grandparents Do?

According to the woman, her paternal grandparents were so furious that they asked their lawyer to compute the amount of financial support her father owed her for all those years he abandoned her, including interest and the cost of her post-secondary education. When the figured out the amount, her grandparents gave this money to her as a gift.

However, the woman had no idea that her grandparents had taken this money out of her father's trust fund. When the man learned about it, he reacted to the huge deduction from his trust fund, which meant he had to find other ways to manage his finances.

As a result, the man contacted his daughter, asking her to return the money because it would affect his wife and children. Although the daughter did not need the money, she felt she was entitled to it and wanted to use it to pay off the debts her mother may have. She wanted her mother to live a peaceful life after her retirement.

The woman was sure she didn't want to return the money to her father, even when she learned that her mother had no debts to pay. So she decided to use the money to set up a scholarship fund for students who wanted to take up her mother's field of study.

Besides that, the Redditor intended to book a trip for her mother and her mother's special friend, who had been with her for years. "And I am going to go pay off my car," the Redditor added.

She posted her story in Reddt's "AITA" forum to ask other people if she was at fault for not returning the money to her father. Soon, people flooded the comments section with their opinions.

What Did Other People Say About the Situation?

Most of the comments the Redditor received were positive. one Netizen said, "NTA. Call it karma. It's your money. It's a lovely idea to give it to your mom." A second Redditor agreed, stating that the woman's grandparents were amazing people. The user suggested the woman reach out to her grandparents and tell them what their son is doing because that would make him stop contacting her.

A third Reddit user said, "You and your mother more than deserve it! I applaud your grandparents for doing the right thing." Another user said it was her father's responsibility to pay child support, and what his parents did was right.

"Your dad has no claim on this money as it's not his. Give it to your mom. She deserves it!" a fourth netizen commented on the woman's post. Most people thought she wasn't at fault for keeping the money.

What would you do if you were in her shoes? Do you think she should return the money to her father and forgive him for not being there while her mother raised her singlehandedly? We would love to know your thoughts on this situation.

Here is another story about a man who refused to pay for his son's wedding after learning that he wouldn't be the only one walking him down the aisle.
