A couple knew they never wanted to have a big wedding ceremony. So, from the get-go, they told their family they would elope. However, when the bride's family found out the two had already gotten married, they were infuriated, demanded a do-over ceremony, and threatened to cut them off.

A couple took it to Reddit to figure out if they were wrong for not telling their family they got married even though they knew they would elope.

The 30-year-old man and his fiancé, 28, always knew they wanted to elope and had made their families aware of the year they were planning on tying the knot. They had been together for five years and engaged for two, and between them, they decided to get married on their fifth anniversary.

They did everything the way they had planned it. The new wife shared a subtle picture about the big day on social media. The picture was of them smiling and showing off their rings. However, the photo was posted before any of the family members were notified.

So when one of the wife's cousins saw the picture, they sent it to all her family members, which caused a lot of drama. "Both her grandmother, aunt, and uncle were furious and hurt that we didn’t include them in our special day." wrote the husband.

The husband said the family called them "selfish, disrespectful, and ungrateful" and demanded a do-over ceremony where everyone would be invited. They said the couple was selfish and manipulative by getting married without including them in the occasion.

The newlyweds tried to explain why they eloped and apologized for hurting their family's feelings, but the apology did not cut it. "They said we betrayed their trust and ruined our relationship with them," wrote the 30-year-old.

According to the husband, the wife only planned on telling her family once she changed her name and did all the paperwork needed. But instead of enjoying their new chapter, they risked losing their close ones, who said they would cut them off for what they did.

As much as the 30-year-old clarified that he and his wife were absolutely happy in their marriage, he did not want them to lose their close relationships with their loved ones. So he turned to fellow Reddit users to ask if he and his wife were wrong for not telling their family they got married even though they were aware this was their plan all along.

The Readers Thoughts

From the onset, readers sided with the couple. They did not believe they were wrong for choosing to spend their wedding day the way they wanted.

People believe the family was unfair in how they reacted because the couple's marriage was not about them but about how the newlyweds wanted to celebrate their union.

Many readers saw the threats to cut them off and have a do-over ceremony as selfish. Most even predicted that the family would be angry when the wife fell pregnant and did not tell them even though the family decided to cut communication with them.

Another point made among commenters was that there was no religious obligation that the couple needed to fulfill, so eloping should not have been a problem for the family.

If there was any cultural tradition that the couple forfitted, then readers would have tried to understand the anger felt by the family. But despite that, marriage was something they could choose to embark on however they pleased.

Additionally, doing what they wanted was seen as a good way for the couple to set the tone of how they would lead their marriage. To commenters, it was a sign that the couple would always keep a united front and not allow their family to interfere with how they decided to lead their lives.

Since the family members knew that eloping was in the cards for the 30-year-old and his wife, readers did not understand why they had to be punished for doing what they wanted.
