Williams on Motherhood & Having ‘Mom Guilt’
Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, welcomed their first child, Olympia, in September 2017. In an April 2019 interview, the proud mom discussed the teachings she would love to pass down to her daughter.
The celebrated sportswoman previously talked about the double standards female athletes face, and her fashion line celebrates all types of women.
Williams expressed that when one is successful, others should be inspired to do better, something she wants to pass down to her daughter Olympia:
"We should be proud of each other, support each other, and be inspired by each other, and that's what I like to teach Olympia as well."
Williams, whose sister is Venus Williams, has also openly talked about balancing motherhood with work. In an April 2022 interview, the 23-time Grand Slam champion admitted:
"Mom guilt is real. I always feel so guilty when I'm doing something on my own. I don't know if I'm a good mom, and I don't know if my method works, but I'm very hands-on with my daughter."
The doting parent further explained that she had set boundaries and that she would directly go to her child when she came off from work.
Williams Had a Second Child with Her Spouse
Williams became a mother of two when she and her husband, Ohanian, welcomed their second daughter in August 2023. The family patriarch announced the news on his social media alongside photos of the happy family of four.
Ohanian shared a picture of him and his beaming wife and eldest child, featuring the newest addition to the family. Another shot showed the proud dad introducing the firstborn to her new little sister, and he said that he would forever cherish that moment.
The father of two penned a heartfelt tribute to the mother of his kids while introducing their new bundle of joy to his 800,000 Instagram followers, writing:
“Welcome, Adira River Ohanian. I'm grateful to report our house is teaming with love: a happy & healthy newborn girl and happy & healthy mama. Feeling grateful. @serenawilliams, you've now given me another incomparable gift — you're the GMOAT."
Williams Is Married to a Millionaire
Williams and her beloved husband, Ohanian, crossed paths by chance in May 2015 at the Cavalieri Hotel in Rome. She was sitting with her team at an empty restaurant when he came and plopped right next to them.
Williams revealed in a June 2017 interview that she and those she was with tried to get rid of Ohanian, but he would not take the hint until she started conversing with him.
She later invited him to go and see one of her matches. That evening, the world-famous tennis star was set to play her first match in the Italian Open.
On the other hand, Ohanian had never watched a tennis match until he met his future wife, Williams. His little to no knowledge about the sport was evident when he excitedly shared a picture of her playing in the Italian Open, which showed her foot faulting.
The lovebirds went on their first date in Paris, where they strolled the streets for six hours. The couple later learned they were expecting their first child together in January 2016.
Williams, a Michigan native, reportedly gave the Brooklyn native a bag with six positive pregnancy tests the day before she had to play at the Australian Open.
Nearly a year and a half after their first meeting, Ohanian asked Williams to marry him in December 2016. They two officially walked down the aisle in November 2017.
While Williams is widely known for playing tennis, her husband Ohanian is known for being the co-founder of the website Reddit, which reportedly has 234 million unique monthly users.
Ohanian co-founded the popular online platform alongside his college friend, Steve Huffman. A year later, they sold Reddit to Conde Nast for a reported $10 to $20 million, making him a millionaire in his early twenties.
The internet entrepreneur previously spoke about his immense success after ditching his law classes to turn his focus to software development. He said:
"I was really lucky. I sold Reddit at 23, and we made more money than my folks had made their entire working lives, and I thought I don't want to screw this up, which is a good first impulse."
The tech giant has also openly talked about money mistakes he has made so far, and that includes hiring a financial advisor. In a 2021 interview, he said he did not want to remain "indebted to someone else's expertise."
In addition, the investor shared that his wife advised him not to work too much. She told him that overworking does not necessarily "sustain greatness," making a prime example of her field of work as she spends much time "recovering, regrouping" as much as she trains and practices. He emphasized that one cannot be their best all the time.
