Catharina Lodders Faced Challenges as Chubby Checker’s Wife
Catharina Lodders is a former beauty queen from Holland who had difficulty adjusting to life in the States after marrying Chubby Checker. The couple also faced discrimination as an interracial couple in America in the '60s.
Chubby Checker is an African-American performer widely known for popularising a few moves on the dance floor. The musician was only 22 and at the peak of his career when he and his wife, Catharina Lodders, said "I do" at a Lutheran church.
Despite being hopelessly in love, the couple faced many obstacles as a Black man and a White woman during a racially tense time in America. However, Catharina Lodders' husband insisted their marriage would succeed "come Hell or high water."

Catharina Lodders Is a Former Ms. World Title Holder
Lodders is originally from Haarlem, the capital of North Holland, and in 1962, she represented her home country at that year's Miss World beauty contest in London, England, and won. She said:
"I don't think I'm the most beautiful girl in the world... I am the most beautiful girl here."
Lodders eventually left her home country and relocated to the States, where she not only grappled with life on foreign soil as an immigrant but has one half of an interracial couple. "I tell her to 'keep your eyes and your ears open, and you'll learn a lot,'" Chubby Checker shared.

Catharina Lodders and Her Husband Faced Discrimination for Their Interracial Relationship
Following their December engagement, Chubby Checker and his wife said "I do" on April 12, 1964, in the Temple Lutheran Church. The young couple were both 22, and the ceremony was officiated by Reverend George L. Garver.
However, their special day proved to be the beginning of a long journey for the couple, who faced discrimination at every turn. After tying the knot, Lodders and her husband struggled to find a home.
"I want so much, however, to have our own home," Lodders revealed. However, her husband insisted they would find a home they liked and could afford, and they would do it with dignity.
Lodders and her husband's marriage has since stood the test of time.

Further complications due to their interracial relationship arose between Lodders and her mother-in-law, who was not thrilled her son had married a White woman.
During an interview, Lodders' husband revealed there had been a misunderstanding between the former beauty queen and his mother due to their communication barriers when Lodders was still living with his family.
However, the singer assured, "There is no problem between my family and my wife." Lodders' husband added that their marriage would succeed "come Hell or high water." The singer also shared that he was thoroughly enjoying life as a newlywed, revealing:
"We get along well and have a ball together. We are merely two people with the same outlook on life."

Catharina Lodders' Appearances with Her Famous Husband
In 1960, Lodders and Chubby Checker stepped out together wearing beaming smiles in London, and three years later, they posed for the camera following their engagement.
A year later, the young couple were a picture of happiness as they were photographed on their wedding day. Lodders and her husband's marriage has since stood the test of time. Over forty years later, they were spotted together during one of Chubby Checker's concerts in New York.
Lodders has since strayed away from the spotlight. On the other hand, her husband recently made a surprise appearance at the WGN studios in March of this year. In August 2023, Chubby Checker attended the Erie County Fair opening, where he taught his famous dance, The Twist.
