I Was Changing My Niece's Diaper When I Noticed Something That Made Me Do a DNA Test – Story of the Day
Carmen is horrified to discover the same birthmark on her niece and husband. Before jumping to conclusions, she decides to do a secret DNA test that she's sure is bound to reveal the truth.
Sitting on a picnic blanket under the shade of a cedar tree felt incredible as I felt the wind blow softly against my hair.
I carefully arranged the food boxes around me, taking a mouthful of each pack of food I fancied before resting my back gently against the tree.
I wasn't alone. In my arms was Baby Sofia, cooing and gurgling like a baby should.

Sofia wasn't my child. She belonged to Fiona, my husband's sister, but that didn't make me love her any less.
My husband and I married ten months ago in a small ceremony, mainly between friends and colleagues.

I desperately wanted his family to be there just like mine was, but David told me that most of his family traveled a lot while the others lived far away.
Still, about two months after the wedding, I was incredibly pleased to meet Fiona, his sister, whom he introduced to me.
I was even more ecstatic to meet Sofia, her daughter, and discover that they had recently moved into the neighborhood.
Fiona was nice and friendly, and Sofia, her daughter, was a one-year-old I absolutely adored.
I looked down, staring at her cute and angelic face, when I heard footsteps loudly approaching where I was seated.

"Carmen, If you're tired of holding on to her, you can just let me know," I suddenly heard Fiona say as she appeared in front of me with a tired smile.
She had been throwing balls with David, and traces of sweat littered the edges of her forehead.
"No. You should clean up a little first. We are fine here," I replied with a gentle smile, drawing Sofia closer to my bosom to show how unwilling I was to let her go.
Fiona instantly chuckled at my funny actions.
"You're the best, and you're so good with her. A clueless stranger would assume you're her mother," Fiona pleasantly replied before jogging off.

She was likely headed to where David was in the distance, but from where I was seated, I could tell he had no intention of returning anytime soon.
"I guess it's just me and you," I softly cooed at Sofia, who raised her little hands to touch my face in response to what I said.
She even opened her mouth and pretended to speak, only to do nothing more than cough a little.
With her lying comfortably on the picnic blanket and well-wrapped in warm clothes, I covered the food with an extra cloth against the wind.
But before I was done, I noticed how restless Sofia was, even more than usual. The next thing I thought to do was take off her clothes.

I thought she probably had a wet diaper, so I removed her clothes to carefully change her diapers.
I'd never had to do it before, but having seen Fiona do it a hundred times, I felt it was something I could do.
Carefully, I pulled off her diapers with a new one in my hand. I wanted to change it quickly enough before she peed on the blanket, only to realize that I didn't need to.
The diapers were crystal clean and seemed to be freshly changed.
Quickly, I dropped the new one and was still fastening the old one back on her waist when I spotted it.

It was a harmless and unique birthmark.
On any random baby in the park, I would have thought nothing more of it, but seeing it on baby Sofia was like being tossed in a lagoon head first.
For the first few minutes, I found it hard to breathe as my eyes remained glued to the birthmark I was sure I had seen multiple times on my husband's back.
I could be wrong. Maybe it just looked like it, but the more I stared at it, the more confident I was that it was the same.
Sofia unexpectedly sneezed, and regardless of the uneasiness in my mind, I hurried to put her diaper and clothes back the way they were before.

When I was done, I picked her up and stared at her face more than ever.
It was apparent that she looked slightly like David, but something I previously presumed was because he and his sister were related, but this was no longer the case.
I was stunned by what I unexpectedly found, but still, I was unwilling to conclude that Sofia belonged to David, even if it answered some questions I had about Sofia.
Questions like who her father was and why Fiona refused to talk about him. Why, sometimes, she and David seemed closer to each other than even I, his wife.
"Have I been blind all this time?" I mumbled silently to myself, staring at Sofia and wondering why I never once thought of the possibility of it.

What if David and Fiona weren't actual siblings?
The wedding between David and I had been small and quiet, and only a handful of family members had attended.
Fiona and Sofia hadn't been able to come, but months later, they suddenly moved closer to the neighborhood we both lived in.
I had to force myself to look calm while holding back all the dread and anxiety I felt as I heard the low voices of David and Fiona get closer to where I was.
With a delighted smile, I greeted them and began talking normally to them, doing my best to pretend that everything was fine.

At that very moment, I decided to wait and confirm my suspicions before confronting them.
I had to be a hundred percent sure that, indeed, he was cheating on me with Fiona, whom he called his sister.
The picnic lasted until late evening when we all said our goodbyes.
Fiona headed home, and David and I also did the same.
After we got home, apart from being quieter than usual, nothing about my actions seemed strange, even when it was time for us to sleep.

I treated David well the way I usually did and even more when he came out of the bathroom, having just taken his bath.
"Let me help you dry your back," I told him, hugging him from the back with a large towel in my hands.
"I like this kind of Royal treatment a lot. It would be nice if a bathing service could be added next time," David teased as he sat on the bed, allowing me to dry his back.
But while he laughed, I could my eyes burn as hot tears slid down my cheeks as I stared intently at the birthmark on his back.
I continued rubbing his back and stared a little more, trying to convince myself otherwise of the truth that stared back at me.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
It was clear that it was the same birthmark. There was not a single difference to be found.
At that moment, I couldn't take it any longer. I dropped the towel in my hands and ran straight to the bathroom, falling to the bathroom floor the second the door was closed.
The tears wouldn't stop falling even as I heard David's voice from behind the door.
"You should have at least warned me that the kingly treatment was only for a few seconds," He loudly teased as I heard him getting on the bed.
Try to breathe, Carmen. You're not sure yet. Maybe-somehow-possibly this is all a coincidence, I thought to myself.

The thought that David had been lying to me for years hurt too much to think about.
Much calmer after sitting in the bathroom and thinking for a few more minutes, I finally decided on the best thing I could do.
It was to do a DNA test between the two of them.
If everything else was cloudy and confusing, a DNA test was bound to reveal the truth.

"I need to know if Fiona is his mistress, and all this time, I'd been nothing but a fool," I whispered in a low tone as I got to my feet, wiping my face to go back out.
I was restless and unsettled for three days while waiting for Fiona to visit me. Sometimes, I even contemplated calling before deciding against it.
I couldn't look too eager or seem strange in a way that would make them realize that I knew their dirty little secret.
But still, the day Fiona decided to visit, I couldn't" help it as I ran towards her and took Sofia from her.
"At this point, Sofia and I might as well move in," Fiona laughed as she entered the house.

I was sure she would have spotted the stiff frown on my face if she wasn't walking in front of me.
"Of course. We are all family," I responded with a light chuckle, even if the look on my face told a different story.
If both of them were to move into the house, then the only thing left for me to do was to move out.
Was this her plan all along? To get close to me before tossing the bomb in my face.
"I'll head to David's study. There are a few things I want to discuss with him," Fiona said right after as she headed up the stairs.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
Instantly, whatever hint of a smile on my face dissolved into nothing as I watched her leave. I no longer trusted her with David, but I couldn't let her know.
The second Fiona was gone, I didn't hesitate to have Sofia slobber playfully into a small bottle I used to store as much saliva as I needed.
On the other hand, I had a different plan in store for David as I waited until Fiona left before executing it.
"OUCH!" David yelled in pain.
"What was that?" he asked, a second after I pulled a few strands of his hair from the root, a way of taking my anger out on him.

It was only slightly satisfying.
"Relax. I just helped you pull something out of your head," I responded with a gentle smile, ignoring the suspicious looks he sent my way as I hurried off.
The next day, after getting the needed DNA samples, I visited a forensics center to submit the samples and request a test.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
There was a small waiting room with a small number of people in front of the office one would enter to submit the samples.
I had barely spent five minutes in my seat admiring the young couple in front of me and the child between them.
The man was dark-haired, but the woman had short blonde hair that got to her shoulders.
Beside them was another woman who looked like a sister to the blonde woman. The tense atmosphere between all of them was glaring.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
I wonder what they're here for, turning my attention back to the office's main door as it swung open to reveal a man with a lab coat.
He came out to usher all of them in. With the papers in his hands, it was clear that he was about to announce the results to them.
"I think everything's" going well," I murmured aloud, only to realize I spoke too soon as I watched the office door open.
A woman ran out, and another ran after her, with a man running after the both of them with the child in his hands.
"Katherine, you're my sister, and I trusted you. Not only is the child yours, but you also lied and made me adopt him!" The blonde woman screamed.

I would have liked to hear the full story, but I couldn't, as they ran out of the center, and I was called in right after.
Still, I learned a valuable lesson that even family members couldn't be trusted.
Gone was the slight guilt I previously felt about doing the DNA test as I dropped off the samples, convinced that I was doing the right thing.
I was given the option of having the results sent to me, and I instantly agreed, even if it would take a few days to get them.
The day after was a weekend, and I wasn't surprised to see Fiona show up with Sofia since it was something that she usually did.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
But unlike other times, I was annoyed and frustrated about her presence, but I kept to myself.
Seeing her smile and try to talk to me only made me feel like she was mocking me, and both she and David were in on it.
The mere sight of her and Sofia made me feel like my marriage had withered even before it had a chance to grow.
Fiona tried talking to me, and in order not to have to respond, I pretended to be sick as I lay in the sitting room watching TV.

It was Saturday, and to my annoyance, David and Fiona soon joined me in the living room as they began discussing the movie I was watching.
I didn't mind and gave out one-word answers to show how reluctant I was until they finally took the hint and began talking to each other.
But everything changed a few minutes later when, instead of talking about the movie as they did, they suddenly began to talk about Sofia.
While they talked, Sofia kept babbling and making baby noises, which made them shift their attention to her.

"Sofia is going to be two years old soon. I wonder what her first words would be," David said with a rare smile as he looked down at Sofia's face.
"Oh, I can't wait for her to say her first words. I'm sure it'll be Mama," Fiona proudly said.
"Carmen, What do you think?" Fiona asked me, but I wasn't in the mood.
"I don't know. It could be poo-poo for all we know," I replied with a straight face, one that was wholly missed as they both roared in laughter.
"I think it could be dada," David confidently replied, pushing his chest out like a proud dad.

Surprisingly, that singular action was all it took to push me off the edge.
Breathe, Carmen, breathe, I mentally whispered, realizing how angry I felt at watching their loving interaction.
"No, It's definitely going to be Mama," Fiona said again.
"I bet it'll be Dada," David replied, shaking his head vehemently like what he said was a law bound to happen.
At first, I had previously decided to wait and only confront them with the proof in my hands, but suddenly, I no longer saw any reason to wait.

If David could so easily take me for a fool and call himself Sofia's father in front of me, why should I pretend to be clueless?
In one swift motion, I pulled off the blankets over me and jumped on my feet to face them.
I was furious, and the pain and anxiety I'd felt since I found the birthmark on Sofia poured out with every word that left my mouth.
"Tell me the truth, Sofia is your child!" I yelled at him, confronting David with what I knew to be the truth.
"Don't even try to deny it. I saw the birthmark on your back on Sofia," I continued, even more pissed by the tears I felt streaming down my face when I talked.

"I-I've never met any of your family members, and suddenly, the sister you introduced to me has a baby who looks like you," I cried, trying not to stutter as I wept and talked at the same time.
"Every time I try asking about Sofia's father. I never get answers. Just tell me the truth!" I screamed at him, only to be devastated at the expression of shock on David's face.
Fiona wasn't any different.
I expected them to speak or at least defend themselves, but they just sat there with shocked looks, almost like they were surprised I actually found out.
My vision was slightly blurred with tears but not bad enough for me to be unable to make out the direction of the door as I grabbed my purse and ran towards the door.

"Carmen, wait!" I heard him yell after me as I got into the car, but that was the last thing I intended to do.
Driving away, the last thing I saw was David trying to get into his car and chase after me, only for Fiona to stop him.
God! How blind could I possibly be not to see it? I admitted to myself as I drove off, wiping the tears on my face to ensure I could see the road.
The first thing I knew I needed was some time to myself, so I lodged in a quiet hotel, one that was far enough from David and Fiona.
"Ma'am, are you okay?" The receptionist asked, and all I could do was smile and nod, realizing how miserable I must look to him.

"I'm fine. I just need a room," I quickly told him, relieved to see the fast service I got right after that.
The room I rented was small since I didn't have much money, but it was still enough to last a few days.
After taking a bath, I was sure I would feel better, but I didn't. It took a while before I stopped crying enough to order food and try to watch a few movies to distract myself.
But I had just taken a few spoons when I suddenly felt the urge to throw up.
At first, I thought it was just a brief feeling that would pass, and I continued eating, only to jump off the bed and run to the bathroom the next second.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
I threw up everything in my stomach and more.
"The food is alright. Is there something in it that I'm allergic to," I wondered aloud, wondering if it was the food or my body itself that was sick.
I cleaned up and returned to the room to "sleep when I unexpectedly froze on the spot.
A frightened look of horror flashed across my face the second the idea popped into my head.
"No!" I yelled.

"Please- I can't get pregnant for that chronic cheater and liar," I pleaded as I lay on the bed, trying not to burst into another round of years.
I would have gone out that night if I thought it was still possible to do so. The fear of it kept me awake until dawn the next day.
Having a child with a husband who wasn't mine alone terrified me. It was clear that Fiona was more important to him.
He had called hundreds of times in the night, and I also saw a few of Fiona's calls, but I didn't even think to pick them up.
The very next morning, the first thing I did was go to the closest pharmacy store where I could get a kit.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
I tried dressing up and combing my hair as best as I could, even though inside of me, I felt like a huge mess.
"I'd like a pregnancy kit," I told the pharmacist, in a bit of a hurry to get it and leave, but it was clear that the woman had other plans.
"What brand would you prefer?" she asked in return, returning to bring a few boxes for me to see.
At that moment, I regretted not finding a mart nearby, knowing I would have been able to pick one off the shelf and pay without answering multiple questions.
"It doesn't matter. I'll take any brand," I replied, only to hear the gentle voice of a middle-aged woman speak behind me.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"Young Lady, of course it matters. Some can be less reliable, while others are spot on. It's good to be sure early on," she said, with me nodding to her every word.
Meanwhile, all I wanted was to disappear entirely from there.
"I agree; give me what you think is the best brand," I hurriedly said with a small smile, trying hard not to glare at the person in front of me.
The moment I got what I came for, after having to wait a couple of more minutes to listen to the older woman tell me to read and follow the instructions written there, I bolted out of there.
The second I got back to my room, I wished I had gotten more as I used the only one I had, feeling my heart race heavily in my chest as I waited to see the results.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
I saw two lines, and I knew I was in trouble.
My hands trembled as I held on to the result, staring at it and willing it to change. I couldn't help but wish it was all a dream and none was real.
The rest of the day was spent trying to decide whether or not I wanted to keep the baby, even with the current circumstances I found myself in.
David kept trying to call me, and I still refused to pick up. It was clear that there was nothing for us to discuss.
But within a few days, the money I had with me ran out, and it didn't help that my card and all my clothes were left at the house.

The next day, I finally decided to go back and pack all my things. I considered going to my parent's house and staying for a while before getting a more stable place to live.
On getting to the house, after knocking on the front door, I wasn't even shocked to see Fiona open the door instead of David.
"Why am I not surprised?" I hissed at her the moment my gaze landed on her as she stood there.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
Seeing her already staying in my home just pissed me off even more.
"Carmen, I'm glad you're back. There are so many things we—" she began to say, but I simply shoved my way past her without even trying to hear her out.
I no longer cared whether they were real siblings; all I knew was that I wanted to put some distance between them and myself.
"Carmen, It's not what you think. I and —" I heard her try to explain, but I continued walking up the stairs, hoping not to see David before leaving.
Annoyingly, I had just gotten to the top of the stairs, walking straight towards the bedroom, when I saw him standing there with a welcoming smile as he carried Sofia in his arms.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
I was gone for days, and Fiona's presence in the house made it clear that she meant more to him than I ever did.
Even the way he carried Sofia in his arms showed that he loved and cherished her like she was his own, probably because Sofia was.
When he looked up from feeding Sofia to see me, I was tempted to turn around and walk away.
To forget about the things I came to pick and walk away and never return. It didn't help that I found out I was pregnant, which only made me even more furious than I already was.
But instead of waking out of the house, I gritted my teeth and walked straight into our bedroom to start packing my things.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"Carmen!" I heard David shout as he walked towards me, but I completely ignored him with no intention of saying a word until I left the house.
"Carmen, it's good that you're back. I've been trying to call you—" David talked, but I made it clear that he was speaking to himself as I continued to pack.
"Listen to me, Fiona is my sister!"
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"Even if she is. It's not like it's unheard of," I muttered under my breath, without caring whether or not he heard me, but surprisingly, he did.
"Carmen," he loudly called my name, trying to get my attention, but at that moment, I felt I had endured enough.
I threw the clothes I was folding straight into my bag and jumped on my feet with an enraged expression.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Unsplash
"David!" I yelled back at him, glaring as I turned to face him.
"I swear to you, Fiona is my sister, and Sofia is my niece. Trust me!" He began speaking before I could.
"I don't know why you would think Sofia is mine, but I can assure you she isn't. I would never cheat on you," David gently said, but I was past caring.
"If it looks like a rat and smells like one, what the hell am I supposed to call it?" I asked, bending down to zip up the bags I managed to pack.
Seeing that I was about to leave, I wasn't surprised to see David move in front of me to stop me, even with Sofia in his hands.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"If you don't believe me, how about a DNA Test?" David offered, but I shook my head.
"I already took one in secret," I replied, wondering what else he could say, only to see an astonished expression on his face.
"And what was the re—" he began to ask after getting over the shock he felt but was interrupted by Fiona's arrival, who immediately walked up to me when she entered.
"Don't even bother saying anything. I always wondered who Sofia's father was and why you never talked about him, but now I know," I told her to her face.
"You don't come for the wedding but suddenly move into the neighborhood a few months later. Was marrying me to hide the affair between the both of you?" I asked them.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"I saw the birthmark! I KNOW THE TRUTH!" I yelled as the floodgates of my eyes tore open, and tears streamed down my face.
I tried to be calm, furiously wiping it off my face, but I only felt it worsen as my entire body shook from the pain I felt.
My current situation was like all those dramas I watched on TV. The only difference this time was that what was happening to me was real.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Unsplash
Who would believe it if I told them my husband was having an affair with his sister? He had a child and, to cover it up, decided to marry me instead.
I had just finished speaking and wondered what else they could say as I clenched my luggage tightly and prepared to leave.
Only for me to see Fiona suddenly start to unbutton her top.
"What do you think you're—" I wanted to ask, only to watch her turn around and bare her shoulders for me to see.
"I have the same birthmark," Fiona told me, her back turned towards me.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"Everyone in our family has it," David added, and for a few seconds, I was stunned.
I raised the edges of the long-sleeved top I wore and used it to wipe the still vibrant tears on my face.
My eyes were tinged red but wide open as I focused all my attention on Fiona, who continued to speak.
"I'm sorry for not explaining that Sofia's Father is a commissioned officer who was deployed to another country but died there," Fiona said with a sad look.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"I don't like talking about it because it makes me sad. He died just before Sofia was born, and I can't help but hate him a little for leaving," Fiona sincerely continued.
"He died without seeing his child, and Sofia, too, would never get to meet him."
It was clear that it wasn't something she liked talking about, as the pain she felt could be seen from the expression on her face.
"Trust me. Fiona and I are only siblings. I only treat Sofia like my own because Fiona wanted Sofia to have a close male figure in her life," David explained.
"Jerry is Sofia's real father, but he will never be in her life. I just wanted to make sure that Sofia would never miss out on anything,"
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Unsplash
Hearing how genuine and sincere David and Fiona sounded, I couldn't help but want to believe them.
I began to feel like I blew things out of proportion and that if I had asked them from the beginning, maybe the situation wouldn't have escalated as it did.
But regardless, I still had doubts.
What if they had enough time to go through their stories? What if all these were well-constructed lies? It didn't help that I had never met any of David's other family members.
I could tell they knew how skeptical I was when I stood there without saying a word, even after all they had said.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
Not knowing what else to do, David began explaining a little more.
"Sofia was sick around the time of our wedding, and I asked Fiona to move closer to prevent her from being alone."
Fiona also felt a need to speak.
"David told me that you liked children and you wouldn't mind having Sofia around, which was why I came around so often," Fiona added, yet I still had a slight tingling feeling in my chest.
"What about your other family members, David? Not one of them came for our wedding." I said in a way that clearly showed how strange it was.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Unsplash
"Most of our family members rarely stay in one place while others live in different countries. If not, they would have made it," Fiona explained before David could.
But instead of making me feel more relieved, it only made me have more doubts than before.
Their stories were synced up perfectly, without a single error.
Finally, I relented, sighing deeply before opening my mouth to speak.
"I did a secret DNA Test. I'm yet to get the result on my phone, but I'm sure the hard copy of the result must be ready," I told them while focusing on Fiona.

I expected her to get angry when I told her about getting a sample from Sofia, but she didn't.
"I don't mind. As long as this misunderstanding is resolved," Fiona said, with David nodding in agreement from beside her.
Sofia surprisingly took that exact time to coo, drawing all their attention to her, which slightly lessened the tension in the air.
I looked at her and couldn't help but smile a little as I watched her move her little fingers and hands, trying to touch David's face as he held her in his arms.

I was relieved that regardless of my doubts, the test was bound to clear them or confirm my suspicions.
Leaving behind my packed luggage, I wanted us to head to the center at that moment.
I was impatient to know the DNA results, but Fiona wasn't. She insisted on feeding Sofia first before we headed out.
No matter how much you stall, we're still going to go to the center, I thought, waiting impatiently for Fiona to feed Sofia.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
David tried talking to me in the meantime, but that was the last thing I wanted to do.
Depending on the results at the center, I would then know if my baby had a father or if David was nothing more than my ex-husband.
Finally, Fiona was done feeding Sofia, and immediately, we all headed towards the center where I previously submitted the samples and requested a DNA Test.
On getting there, the line was a little long, and I was surprised to see another dramatic event happening there even before we sat down.
A man stood yelling at his wife as he held the result they had just given him in his hand. Surprisingly, none of the four children standing beside him was his own.

"How dare you! How could you! How—" he yelled, only stopping when he realized he had nothing more to say.
The woman kept wailing, trying to plead with him, but the man didn't care.
He was about to open his mouth to continue yelling at her when some security agents appeared and led them out of the center.

"Is this place always this lively?" Fiona asked me, and I nodded, slightly shocked about how calm she and David were.
From their demeanor alone, I slowly began to admit that I might have been wrong all along, seeing how confidently they waited for our turn.
We didn't have to wait long before we were led into an office where a middle-aged man sat waiting with a heavy expression on his face the moment his eyes landed on the three of us.
"Regardless of the results, I'd like to think all of you would try to act composed when you see it," he said as he slowly opened the file.
I could feel my heart racing, but David and Fiona still looked calm and unbothered.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
This made me feel less worried, but that was until I heard the man's following words.
"The two samples that were tested are indeed biologically related. There's a 50% match,"
A 50% match. My eyes rapidly blinked from the devastating shock of it.
I felt the ground at my feet shake as I heard the results. I needed to hold on to the arm of my chair to steady myself.
"That's impossible!" David responded, first jumping on her feet, as Fiona looked equally stunned.
For illustration purposes only. | Source: Pexels
"You all seem shocked, so I'm guessing that's not the result you were expecting," the man continued with a pitiful look as he turned the file he was staring at to face us.
I quickly grabbed it, wanting to confirm it with my own eyes. Tears had only begun to fill my eyes when I spotted a strange name at the top of the paper.
When signing up for the result, I used Sofia's and David's names, but on the paper were two completely strange names I had never seen before.
I instantly pointed out the error, only to watch the attendant apologize profusely and remove a different sheet from the file.
The moment he passed the real one over, I expected the same result but was surprised to see that it was completely different.

"It's good to know that the first test was wrong," David chuckled with a breath of relief after he saw the second test.
"It's clear that I'm not Sofia's father," he continued, waving the paper as I stood there, not knowing what to say.
"Even if the second test said that David was the father, I would have insisted that we do another one," Fiona said, getting on her feet and showing her intention to leave.
The drive home was pretty quiet, but the moment we got inside, I furiously apologized to David and Fiona for doubting them.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry," I said, knowing how big of an issue I made, especially since I refused to believe them even when they kept telling the truth.

"I should have believed you when you—" I continued, only for David to interrupt and stop me.
"It's my fault. I made you have doubts and didn't clear all your suspicions even when you kept complaining about not meeting my family," he said with an understanding expression.
"We are family. I should have also told you about Sofia's father," Fiona mentioned while moving closer to hug me with a big smile.
"Look on the bright side. Now we have a good excuse to drag all our family members in for a family get-together," she said, looking over at David to see if he agreed.
"Of course. I'll drag them here myself If I have to," David replied as he also moved closer to join the hug.

We stayed in that position for a while until we heard loud baby noises from Sofia, who was still in Fiona's arms.
"Waaa!" she cried, and we all separated and laughed, knowing that Sofia was most likely asking for more attention.
I was beyond happy at realizing that my family was still intact, and they were even more pleased when I told them I was pregnant.

Months later, after delivering a baby boy named Zara, I was shocked to see the number of cars parked in front of our house as many people trooped in.
There were many camera people amongst them with no choice but to wait on the edge of our property.
"I didn't know your family members were this popular," I whispered in David's ears as I held Zara, who was fast asleep in my arms.

"You should wait until you meet them. I can assure you you'll be a little amazed," David whispered back with a huge grin.
He wrapped his arms around me, and with Fiona standing behind us holding Sofia, we got ready to meet the rest of the family.
