Marlli separated from her husband when Maluma was only ten years old. At that time, her son was only a young boy dreaming of becoming a soccer player with a growing interest in music. With her husband's absence, Marlli's only boy felt that he had to step up and care for his mother and sister. He recalled:

Marlli's son paid tribute to his family through his moniker in the music industry – a combination of the first two letters of their names, Marlli, Luis, and Manuela. The name symbolizes his unconditional love for his family.

Maluma has the name inked on his left leg and credits his sister for helping him get the tattoo at 14. Manuela took him to Premium Plaza Shopping Mall in El Poblado after she got a tattoo of the name.

Marlli is supportive of her son's career and has been seen with him multiple times, including the Univision's 13th Edition of Premios Juventud Youth Awards in 2016 and the premiere of "Maluma: Lo Que Era, Lo Que Soy, Lo Que Seré" and Premios Juventud in 2019.
