Melanie Griffith gained early recognition in the entertainment industry through her versatility in both comedies and dramas. Her roles in films such as "Working Girl," which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, solidified her status as a Hollywood icon.
Despite her successful career, Griffith has opened up about the challenges of working in her industry. She noted that if one becomes complacent, they risk being considered boring and easily replaceable.

The pressure to preserve her professional reputation pushed Griffith to take some of these uncommon roles. In her older years, the actress also wanted to prove that despite a flagging film career, she could still offer a lot at her age. She confessed:
"I wish that I could make more movies."
Griffith also had a personal reputation to maintain as the tabloids weren't interested in her career but in her rounds with rehab and cosmetic surgery. She felt that this affected her career as people were only keen to look at the lines on her face. The actress lamented:
"It's not because I lost my talent or I became deformed. It's only because I am older. And that's really sad. It's something I do feel a passion to fight."

Griffith revealed that in the Hollywood industry, when a woman hits her 40s, she is forgotten and only a few women are strong enough to change the perception. The actress found the industry to be brutal, tough, and full of criticism, judgment, and opinions, unlike how glamorous it was always portrayed.

Some of the criticisms come from online, from people who judge Griffith's physical appearance. The actress confessed, "Most people are telling me I look horrible," adding, "The tweets I get are really nasty."
The Oscar nominee has admitted to resorting to cosmetic surgery and not realizing how bad it got until people started criticizing her looks. "I was so hurt I went to a different doctor and he started dissolving all of this [expletive] that this other woman doctor had put in, " she revealed. To her relief, she felt like she finally looked normal afterward.
Medical issues also contributed to Griffith's altered appearance, and the actress has admitted that her medical procedures took a toll on her too.
Griffith's Skin Cancer Removal Surgery
In August 2018, Griffith shared that she underwent medical surgery to have some skin cancer removed from her nose. The actress's spokeswoman, Robin Baum, further revealed that the medical procedure was carried out early enough to prevent future complications.

On her Instagram account, Griffith posted a picture where her nose had a bandage. Griffith had just undergone dermabrasion, the final step to fix her removed basil cell skin cancer. She advised people to get checked out by their dermatologists and be tested for skin cancer cells.
The skin cancer surgery was scary for Griffith because, as an actress, she depends on her face for work. Before the effect of the procedure healed, she would put Band-Aid on her nose, which turned out fine but ended up looking dark. She also developed a black eye due to the procedure.

In January 2023, years after her skin cancer battle, Griffith was spotted with a large scar on her left cheek. A tiny part of the scar had a laceration, which looked like it was sewn with stitches and was open and healing.
A few months later, in May 2023, the actress was spotted leaving the Melanie Grant skin care clinic, which specializes in facials and clinical treatments, such as laser facials and depigmentation. On this appearance, the actress had bruising on her hand and left cheek. Her left hand and knuckles were dark purple, and a tiny section near her ear appeared to be discolored.
Griffith has always been concerned about her appearance, and as she got older, she believed she was "not that beautiful" and that Hollywood had changed for her. Still, she worked out every day with a trainer to remain healthy and fit.
