Late and legendary actor Heath Ledger left behind an incredible legacy when he sadly passed away. Apart from the illustrious career he established, he left behind his only lookalike daughter, Matilda Ledger, whom he had with his ex, Michelle Williams.

Though Heath died at 28, when Matilda was very young, age two to be exact, he got to be a dad for a brief time. According to his family and close friends, he loved and doted on his baby girl, who was most precious to him.

When Matilda was born, Heath took to fatherhood like a duck takes to water. Matt Amato, a longtime friend of his, shared, "He was just a natural dad. I met Matilda three days after she was born and they were just a beautiful painting together. He just held her and would wrap her in her blanket."
Even though Matilda tragically didn't get to spend much time with her dad, there is no disputing that Heath loved his daughter dearly. His family has confirmed this numerous times, especially his father, Kim Ledger, who decided to leave all his son's estate to her despite Heath having left it to him, his mom, and his sisters.
Although for the first two years of her life, Matilda had both her parents, her dad, and mom had split a year before Heath's death. According to someone a media outlet deemed a close source of the couple's, Heath and Williams' three-year-long relationship had been rocky for some time.

Matilda's parents had tried to make it work for a while but eventually decided to split amicably. When the iconic actor beloved by countless around the globe passed, Williams was left to raise her beloved daughter as a single mother.

Having lost the father of her child has naturally been tough for Williams, who still spoke about the difficulty of accepting Heath's death years after he passed. The "Shutter Island" star explained that even though she is usually a steadfast believer in accepting one's fate and things the way they are, when it comes to Heath's death, she said, "You know, that's just something that doesn't...I mean, it just won't ever be right."

Nonetheless, Williams raised Matilda to the best of her abilities, and luckily, she has the support of a village, like her daughter's godfather, Heath's "Brokeback Mountain" costar Jake Gyllenhaal. Hollywood actress Busy Philipps is also particularly protective of the mother and daughter being that she is Williams' best friend.
Phillips also knew Heath, whom she said she had seen a few months before he died and who attended her wedding with Williams.

Matilda also had the presence of another paternal figure in her life soon after her dad died. Actor and good friend of Williams, Jeremy Strong, had moved into her house with another friend and his sister to help Williams with her daughter after Heath died.
Last year, there was talk of Matilda wanting to visit her father's homeland of Australia, where his family is, to learn more about her dad.

For hours each day, Strong would keep Matilda entertained with childhood games, like allowing her to take rides on his back like a horse.
Of Strong's paternal father-figure impact on Matilda, Williams mentioned, "Jeremey was serious enough to hold the weight of a child's broken heart and sensitive enough to understand how to approach her... [Matilda] didn't grow up with her father, but she grew up with her Jeremy and we were changed by his ability to play as though his life depended upon it, because hers did."
As a loving and doting mother, Michelle Williams did her best to provide a fruitful environment for Matilda. In an effort to protect her from the harsh scrutiny of the public eye and cameras, Williams moved herself and Matilda to a farm in upstate New York where they would be less observed.

However, they moved back to Brooklyn after some time, and despite the moving around, Williams was still able to keep Matilda's routine and schooling intact without causing disruption. Matilda's mom also did all she could to give her a normal childhood, having been born to two ultra-famous parents.
Williams' child-rearing efforts have been praised by Heath's family and friends many times. While speaking about her late brother, Kate Ledger said the following about how Williams has raised Matilda: "I think that she provides such a wonderful environment for Matilda to grow up in, especially in the sort of industry that she's in."

Williams always put motherhood above and over everything else, even her career at times. She initially turned down her role in "Blue Valentine" once she found out she would have to leave Matilda to film the movie. Luckily, the director changed the location of the production to make it closer to her home, so she was still able to star in the film.
Apart from ensuring she was always there for Matilda, another milestone Williams wanted her daughter to experience was the chance to become a sibling. In fact, she previously opened up about how much pressure she put on herself to find another life partner so that Matilda could have little brothers or sisters.

As a hands-on parent who has been with her daughter every step of the way in her life, Williams could not be prouder of watching Matilda grow and blossom. Of watching her daughter come into her own as she ages, the "Venom" talent expressed, "I can't take my eyes off her. It is a glorious miracle to behold that I never thought I would witness in my lifetime."
The more Matilda has aged, the more she has grown to be just like her father in more ways than just her striking resemblance to Heath. As Matilda has matured into her teenage years, she's adopted many of Heath's personality traits and interests.
Though she is primarily dubbed her dad's lookalike, Matilda's aunt says that as she grows older, she comes to resemble her mom as well. However, Matilda is still Heath's twin, who reminds his family of their dearly missed loved one. Of Matilda's mannerisms, Kate divulged, "When [Matilda] picks up her pencil, it reminds me of Heath; when she walks, it reminds me of Heath."
Kate went on to say that even when Matilda rides on her skateboard, it reminds her of her late brother, who learned to skateboard for his role in the 2005 movie "Lords of Dogtown." Skateboarding is another hobby Matilda picked up from her dad, and years ago, when she was spotted with her skateboard, dressed in her skate attire, she was a splitting image of her late father.
Last year, there was talk of Matilda wanting to visit her father's homeland of Australia, where his family is, to learn more about her dad. Usually, Matilda's grandparents would be the ones to make the trip to Brooklyn to see her whenever they could, but they were said to be over the moon about the possibility of her wanting to visit their neck of the woods.
Before an outlet released the news of Matilda's desire to go to Australia, Kate mentioned how she would frequently tell past stories about Heath Ledger to the now 18-year-old whenever she got an opportunity to see her.
