Am I Wrong for Telling My Teen Daughter to Leave My Home after What She Did?

A mother admitted that she was devastated when she found out that her 15-year-old daughter was pregnant. But she supported her and helped raise her grandson. However, when her daughter dropped another bombshell on her, the mother felt giving her a harsh lesson on reality was necessary.

A 45-year-old mother opened up about a situation that led her to ask her 19-year-old daughter to move out of her home. Her daughter, Josie, became pregnant with her first child when she was 15.

The Original Poster (OP) admitted that she and her husband were shattered when they found out. They tried their best to give Joise the proper education about sex, but it was too late, and the only thing they could do at the moment was support whatever decision their daughter made.

Once Josie's son was born, the grandparents were there to take care of him. They allowed their daughter to continue living with them and asked her to return to finish high school or get a job. Josie opted for a job and reasoned that her main priority was caring for her child, so the 19-year-old found a part-time job at a hair salon.

The father of her child was also the same age and lived in the same city. He would send $100 monthly for anything the baby needed and visited his son every few months. The OP did not think the father was present enough in his son's life, so she was shocked when Josie told her she was pregnant with another child of his.

The news of the pregnancy made the OP and her husband angry. "How can she get pregnant by that boy for the second time when he was very obviously not consistent or helpful with their first baby," reiterated the mother.

The 45-year-old thought about how her daughter already lived rent-free in the house and how she and her husband were helping her take care of her son while she worked. Another addition would mean they would be left raising two children while Josie is out working.

After much deliberation, the OP and her husband agreed that they would ask Josie to move in with the father of her children. However, Josie told her they were not together and got upset at her mother's request. She said, "You're never satisfied with anything I do. You told me to get a job, so I did, and now you're complaining that you had to raise the baby. You wouldn't have had to if I didn't have to work. I can't do both things at once."

The mother emphasized to her daughter that she tried her best to give her the tools to not find herself in the same situation again after her first pregnancy. "You clearly haven't learned a thing, and it's not our job to keep picking up after you. So before your baby arrives, discuss living arrangements with the father and figure something out," said the OP to Josie.

Josie has since been crying and giving her parents the silent treatment. She told both sets of grandparents about the situation, which has left the OP and her husband with too much criticism. The Redditor's in-laws told her she was being too harsh and punishing her daughter for something she could not change.

Her in-laws also offered to take in Josie and her son, but the 19-year-old did not want to move too far from the father of her children. This left the Redditor with mixed feelings because she felt sorry for her grandson.

It was also not helping that her in-laws had warned her that she would regret abandoning her child when she needed her the most. Now the OP wondered if she was wrong for asking her daughter to move out and turned to other Redditors for advice.

Most readers thought the OP was right for what she did. People agreed that punishment might seem harsh but thought Josie needed to learn to take responsibility for her actions. Redditors were convinced that if the 45-year-old did not take action, she would be welcoming baby number three soon.
