A TikTok user named Randi Mashton took to TikTok to answer a question posed by another user, "What's the worst thing your mother-in-law (MIL) has said to you?"

In her response, Mashton revealed that she was married to a military man at age 18. Her husband was then deployed on his first mission, and on the day he returned, he got off the ship and hugged his wife.

The original poster's (OP) mother passed when she was 19, and the heartbreaking news was hard for her because she and the late parent had been best friends. Mashton noted that her husband's mother kept calling during that difficult time.

OP informed her MIL that her son would call her back as they had just found out some bad news about her mother. The TikToker's MIL told her that she is her husband's mother and could die at any time before demanding to talk to him.

Mashton couldn't handle the older woman at that time and dropped the call because she had a lot on her plate and didn't know what to do. Not taking kindly to being brushed off, her MIL left her a three-minute voice message telling her how disrespectful and selfish she was for not allowing the older woman to talk to her son on the day he returned from deployment.

"He could have called her later."

Her husband's mother continued, saying as his parent, she demanded respect and "nobody was worried about my mother passing." Surprisingly, Mashton's post received mixed reactions from TikTok users. Those who thought she was in the wrong in her incident gave their opinions.

One person wrote, "Your mother just died. I would think you would allow a free minutes (sic) for him to speak to his."

"No ma’am as a mother I can say you definitely should have let him speak to his mother," replied another viewer.

"I am a military wife (23 years) I would NEVER deny my MIL access to her son. Even if I had personal issues. That is her son. I’m sorry for your loss," stated a TikTok user.

Someone else sympathized but chastised OP writing, "Ooof sounds like an AWFUL situation to be in but give her grace bc (because) it probably wouldn't (sic) have spiraled out of control if you just let her talk to him."

To which Mashton replied, "Agree to disagree …. I lost my mom… I think I was okay to break down and not deal with her mess."

Another person added, "I am very sorry for your loss. But returning from deployment is a huge deal. He definitely should’ve talked to his mom."

Leading OP to respond, "Nahhh she was fine .. she knew he was okay."

However, several others thought Mashton wasn't in the wrong, with one TikToker noting, "That’s the problem with all parents for the most part. They think they are important in their kids (sic) marriage. What destroyed my 1st marriage."

Mashton replied to the comment saying, "I have heard this so many times…. It’s really sad .. I have a big family I wanted a big family but not crazy."

"He could’ve called her later. He just got back. Shouldn’t be going anywhere and you experienced trauma," thought another viewer.

"oo ooh if she would of pulled that shot on, me with my mom uh ya she have hell I don't play when it comes to my mother and my husband will stop everyth[ing] (sic)," revealed someone else.

A fourth supporter held space for OP writing, "That's awful! I would never treat my daughter in law (sic) like that. I'm sorry for your loss."

Grateful for the positive response Mashton replied, "Thank you.. I appreciate that… she loved me at first then we said I do and it completely changed."

"Idk (I don't know) what happens to some women when they have a boy but it’s like they forget everything about their own MILs," stated someone who'd watched Mashton's clip.

OP thought the person's statement was hilarious, writing, "Bahaha I will never she taught me everything NOT to be."

Sadly, Mashton posted her clip hoping to get some sympathy from viewers, but instead, some people made her feel like she didn't act accordingly just after losing her mother. However, the messages of support perked her up and left her feeling vindicated.
