All About David Bowie and Iman's Only Child
Born into immense fame as the daughter of a music legend and a fashion icon, her parents chose to wait before starting a family, ensuring they could devote their full attention to her when the time came.
David Robert Jones, famously known as David Bowie, and supermodel Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, known simply as Iman, shared one child together — Alexandria 'Lexi' Zahra Jones. Over the years, details about her life have emerged, from the special meaning behind her name to the close bond she shared with her late father.
David and Iman joyfully welcomed Alexandria in the early morning of August 15, 2000. She weighed just over seven pounds. David was by Iman's side throughout the delivery and even helped cut the umbilical cord.
The couple, who had been married for several years at the time, each already had children from previous relationships — David's son, Duncan, and Iman's daughter, Zulekha.
When David was asked whether he had already thought of names for his children when he first met Iman, he admitted that his attraction to her was instant and overwhelming.
"I couldn't sleep for the excitement of our first date. That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal. I'd never gone after anything with such passion in all my life. I just knew she was the one," he gushed.
Over the years, the couple had floated several potential names for their future children, but when they discovered they were expecting a daughter, the conversation became more intentional and focused.
"The very first names we picked were Alexandria and Zahra. Then we went through a cycle of maybe another 20 or 30 alternatives. But in the end, the day before the birth, we arrived right back at our first choices," David divulged.
The English singer also discussed the meaning behind their daughter's name, sharing that he had long favored the name Alexander. By coincidence, when he and Iman began talking about baby names, she suggested Alexandria if they were to have a girl, inspired by the Greco-Egyptian city.
She hadn't known how similar it was to his own choice, and with just a slight change in letters, they found the perfect name. "Many things like that happen between us, though, so I shouldn't have been surprised. The name Zahra was to have been lman's own name at birth, but a senior member of the family changed it to lman at the last minute," added David.
David explained that Zahra, though uncommon, is the Arabic form of Sarah. "Depending on where you go for a definition you'll find some of the following: inner light; luminous; fair and beautiful; blossoming; or even shining," he noted.
As he shared these details during an interview, Iman entered the room carrying baby Alexandria, who looked peaceful and almost smiling in her mother's arms. David remarked that the name suited her perfectly.
Alexandria looked fair and beautiful — with light skin, hazel eyes, thick dark hair, and long legs, she already bore a striking resemblance to her dad.
"It happened with my son Duncan as well. We look so much alike it's spooky. Sometimes I look at him and see myself again at his age. Of course, he's a lot more sporty than I ever was. He's really buff. Very thickset and muscular," the singer said.
Even the doctor at Alexandria's birth had joked that David had passed on his entire gene pool to his daughter. Iman added with a laugh that during their daughter's first bath, her hair curled up tightly when wet — a sweet sign that more surprises about her little one were yet to come.
Asked whether their daughter was a good baby, David proudly shared that she hardly ever cried unless something genuinely needed attention. The singer joked that otherwise "it's all whine and dine with spit-ups as cabaret."
Iman went on to say that their daughter was already very lively, constantly stretching, kicking, and trying hard to straighten her little legs.
Reflecting on parenthood the second time around, Iman recalled that when her daughter Zulekha was born, she had been at the height of her modeling career. At the time, she struggled to balance motherhood with a demanding professional life.
However, when they welcomed Alexandria, both she and David were in a place where they could control their schedules rather than be ruled by them.
David Bowie explained that they had been deliberate about ensuring the right conditions before deciding to expand their family. During the first six years of their marriage, having another child wasn't possible as Iman was focused on building her cosmetics company while he continued touring frequently.
"We had to be in a position where nothing could take us from home for at least the first couple of years. So, in reality, we had only been trying for Alex for a year or two before Iman got pregnant," the acclaimed songwriter divulged.
Once they received confirmation of the pregnancy, the couple decided to share the news personally with their children. Iman called her daughter Zulekha at university, while David reached out to his son Duncan in London the same day.
Alexandria lost her father on January 10, 2016, a devastating moment that came after years of sharing the close bond David had always hoped to build with her. Though he is no longer with her, the music legend's daughter continues to honor his memory in heartfelt ways.
In 2023, she posted a touching throwback video of herself as a little girl dancing to nursery rhymes with her dad at home — a moment lovingly captured by Iman.
"My forever sunshine ❤️," she wrote in the caption, showing David in a rare, relaxed moment away from the stage, completely present with his daughter.
On the second anniversary of his passing, Alexandria marked the occasion with a tattoo in his memory — a crescent moon encircling the words "Daddy xxx" and the years "1947–2016."
