Why Donald Trump and JD Vance Didn't Attend Dick Cheney's Funeral

Despite the absence of the president and vice president, attendees at the funeral honored Dick Cheney's legacy and praised his contributions.

On Thursday, November 20, political leaders gathered in Washington, DC, to honor the life of former Vice President Dick Cheney. As high-profile figures paid tribute to one of the most influential Republicans of his era, the absence of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance quickly drew attention.

Trump and Vance No-Show at Cheney Farewell

Cheney, a central force in conservative politics who served as the 46th vice president under President George W. Bush, passed away on Monday, November 3, at age 84.

His funeral drew two former presidents, every living former vice president, and a long list of Washington officials. Despite the broad turnout, the nation's two current top officeholders, both Republicans, were not in the pews.

A person familiar with the arrangements said that Trump and Vance were not included on the funeral's guest list. Not being invited marked a noticeable break from long-standing tradition.

While it isn't mandatory, sitting presidents traditionally attend the funerals of former presidents or vice presidents who pass away during their time in office.

Trump Silent, Vance Speaks

Trump was scheduled to receive his intelligence briefing at 11 a.m. on the day of the funeral, which coincided with the start of the service at the Washington National Cathedral. The event also did not appear on his official public schedule for Thursday.

Furthermore, Trump has not made any public remarks about Cheney's death or offered condolences, though White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on it.

She noted during a briefing, "I know the president is aware of the former vice president's passing. And as you saw, flags have been lowered to half staff in accordance with statutory law."

In contrast, Vance paid tribute to Cheney on Thursday, describing him as "a guy who served his country," adding that he wished the Cheney family "all the best in this moment of grieving."

A Star-Studded Farewell Fit for a Powerhouse

Cheney's memorial service at the cathedral included full military honors and was limited to invited guests.

Among those present were former Presidents Joe Biden and Bush, alongside former First Ladies Jill Biden and Laura Bush. Former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle were also in attendance.

Several members of the Supreme Court took part in the service, including Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Elena Kagan. Numerous former and current Cabinet officials from both Democratic and Republican administrations joined them.

Congressional leaders were also present, representing both parties. Those at the somber event included Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and former Senate leader Mitch McConnell.

A Final Goodbye Surrounded by Loved Ones

When Cheney died, his family released a statement explaining that he passed away surrounded by loved ones, including his wife, Lynne, his daughters Liz and Mary, and other relatives. The statement said Cheney died "due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease."

Before becoming vice president, Dick Cheney held several major federal roles, such as secretary of defense, White House chief of staff, and Wyoming's representative in Congress.

His vice presidency lasted from 2001 to 2009, marking him as one of the most influential political figures of the early 21st century.

His family reflected on his years of public service, commending the impact he made on the country. They noted, "Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing."

The family added, "We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man."

From Reluctant VP Pick to Political Powerhouse

Bush also remembered his former vice president as a dependable and dedicated public servant who raised the bar for everyone who worked with him.

He emphasized that Cheney's competence was obvious without any need for self-promotion. Bush also noted that Cheney's judgment and discipline always outweighed personal ego.

The former president then recounted how Cheney ended up as his vice president. Cheney was originally brought in to assist in the search for a running mate during the 2000 presidential campaign.

However, after reviewing the list of potential candidates, Bush realized that Cheney was the strongest choice for the role.

George W. Bush also recalled that when he first proposed the idea, Cheney listed several reasons why he should not accept the position, demonstrating his characteristic caution and humility. Eventually, Cheney served for two terms under Bush.

Among the honorary pallbearers at his funeral were members of his Secret Service team, his former chiefs of staff David Addington and Scooter Libby, and photographer David Hume Kennerly.

In addition to his daughters and his wife of 61 years, who was also his high school sweetheart, Cheney is survived by seven grandchildren.
