The young actor said he decided to speak publicly because informing people individually had become too difficult, and he hoped to focus on spending meaningful time with his wife and their daughter.
"Hope Street" actor Finnian Garbutt shared that he was approaching the end of his life, telling followers that his cancer had advanced quickly after he was taken into hospital for tests.
The 28-year-old, who played Ryan Power in the BBC daytime drama, posted the update on Instagram on 1 March 2026. In the message, Garbutt said he had been dealing with pain in his back and hip, which prompted his cancer team to admit him for observation and scans.
"Unfortunately the scans have shown that the cancer has progressed rapidly in my body, and I am now entering the last stages of my life," he wrote. Garbutt was first diagnosed with skin cancer in December 2021 and underwent surgery to remove it in early 2022.
The update prompted an immediate wave of emotion online, with many focusing on the cruelty of the news and the life milestones Garbutt had celebrated.
Eventually, he said, the speed of the disease's progression had changed his reality in a matter of weeks, and he wanted to be open about that shift for a simple reason — telling people one by one felt overwhelming.
"I'm putting this out there, as it is really difficult to tell people individually. And I hope, now that it's in the open, I can enjoy the time with my amazing family and friends," he said.
Even as he delivered the bleakest of updates, Garbutt reflected on what he had managed to build since his diagnosis — both on screen and at home. He shared:
"Since being diagnosed four years ago, I have achieved so many of my life goals. 30 episodes in a TV show, being the lead in a movie (that should be out soon), buying my own house, marrying my best friend and becoming a father to the most incredible baby girl who never fails to make me smile."

Garbutt was married to his wife Louise and was a father to their daughter Saoirse. He ended his post by thanking those who had supported him and his loved ones, while also extending an invitation to anyone hoping to see him in the time he had left.
"Thank you to all [who] have reached out over the years and supported me and my family. If anyone wants to meet up for a pint, coffee or general bit of craic, please reach out and we can try [to] make it work," the actor concluded.
The update prompted an immediate wave of emotion online, with many focusing on the cruelty of the news and the life milestones Garbutt had celebrated. "Life can be so cruel. Everything to live for. God bless you and your family," one person commented.
"O my How bloody cruel life can be My heart goes out to you and your family xx A truly brave person to share this with everyone x [sic]," another person wrote.
A third added, "This is such sad news I love hope street he's way to young to suffer this awful disease [sic]." A final netizen shared, "So sad poor man that's the last thing he wants, to hear just got married and had a baby, how awful for that to happen to him my, condolences to his wife and family [sic]."
Not long after, that grief turned into mourning. Garbutt passed away on 17 April 2026, with his family confirming the news in a heartbreaking statement shared on Instagram.
"We're absolutely heartbroken to announce that Finnian passed away yesterday after a sudden decline in his condition," his loved ones said, adding that the actor had passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, as he had wished.

"We will always love and miss you, Finn. You were the greatest husband, father, son, brother, and friend we could ever ask for, and knowing that you’re no longer in pain gives us all comfort, despite our own immense pain at losing you," the statement continued.
The announcement prompted a renewed outpouring of grief online, as many reflected on both his on-screen presence and the life he built off camera. "Life is so unfair at times. He was far too young. Sincere condolences to all his loved ones. Rest easy Finnian," one person shared.
"I'm devastated. He was one of my favourite characters on Hope Street. Such a terrible sad tragedy for someone so young and his wife and little daughter. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP [sic]," another wrote.
