King Charles III is reportedly weighing a surprising gesture toward Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex — one that could place the California-based couple back inside the Windsor estate in a property long associated with controversy.

Six years after the pair's now infamous royal exit that reshaped the modern monarchy, the reported proposal comes as signs of reconciliation between the monarch and his younger son continue to emerge.

A Symbolic Gesture From the Monarch

According to royal columnist Rob Shuter, the monarch is considering offering Royal Lodge, a large residence on the Windsor estate, to Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

The property, which has 30 rooms, was previously occupied by the former royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his wife, Sarah Ferguson, before the King ordered his brother to vacate the residence in 2023.

The reported proposal surfaced in Shuter's Substack newsletter on March 2, 2026, where palace sources suggested the move could serve as a gesture of reconciliation toward the Sussexes, who now live in Montecito. One insider claimed:

"This would be the ultimate olive branch. Charles wants unity. Offering Harry a significant Windsor property would send a powerful message that the door is still open."

Royal Lodge itself is not a simple offering. The Windsor property has sat empty since Andrew left the estate and relocated to Wood Farm Cottage in Norfolk, a far more modest residence.

Maintaining the historic home is reportedly expensive, and it requires significant repairs after years of use. Yet beyond its physical condition, the property carries a complicated reputation due to its previous occupant.

As one source noted, "The optics are tricky," pointing to the controversy that has surrounded the residence in recent years. "Moving Harry and Meghan into Andrew's old house ties them to a property that's become synonymous with scandal. That's a lot of baggage."

News of the reported proposal has sparked strong reactions online, with many weighing in on whether such a move would be appropriate given the royal family's recent history.

Still, insiders suggest the King's thinking is focused less on property logistics and more on family dynamics. Another source explained the aim is "about keeping family close — geographically and emotionally."

Whether Prince Harry and Meghan would accept such an offer remains unclear. The couple have built their lives in the United States and have not publicly indicated plans to resume royal duties.

A Gradual Thaw in Father–Son Relations

The reported housing proposal arrives amid growing signs of reconciliation between King Charles III and Prince Harry, following several years of strained relations. In September 2025, the Duke of Sussex travelled to London for a private meeting with his father — their first in more than 18 months.

The meeting followed weeks of intense speculation about whether the encounter would take place. When the day finally arrived, photographers captured both King Charles III and Prince Harry arriving separately at Clarence House within minutes of each other.

Their discussion lasted about 55 minutes, but observers widely interpreted the meeting as a positive step forward. Soon afterward, the Duke of Sussex appeared at an Invictus Games-related event, where he was asked about his father. He responded simply, "Yes, he's great, thank you."

Online Reactions Pour In

News of the reported proposal has sparked strong reactions online, with many weighing in on whether such a move would be appropriate given the royal family's recent history. Some comments were sharply critical, as one person typed, "Has he lost his mind!!!!!"

Another commenter questioned the fairness of the decision, writing, "Pardon, I understand a parent trying to repair damage in the family but Harry & MEGHAN caused the problem. And if he does that for Harry & M then he should do the same for Andrew too."

Another person criticised the idea as well, writing, "After they talked about countless things regarding the royal family,They're going to be rewarded,That's why Meghan already feels like the next queen, hahaha [sic]."

Others suggested that William, Prince of Wales, could play a role in whether such a move would ever materialise. "He better be checking with William first," one person commented, while another added, "Hahaha, William won't let that happen, so don't hold your breath!"

Meanwhile, Andrew continues to face legal scrutiny.

Yet some voices urged the family to prioritise reconciliation. "It's time to let go of the family drama, it is a time as life slips away fast , too late when something happens and can't be reversed [sic]," one netizen shared.

Another echoed that sentiment, writing, "Proof that Blood is Thicker than Water Family is More Important No One is Perfect [sic]."

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Remains Under Scrutiny

While speculation about the future of Royal Lodge continues, the controversy surrounding its former occupant has not faded. Andrew has largely remained out of public view since relocating to Wood Farm Cottage in Norfolk following his eviction from the Windsor estate.

However, earlier this week, Richard Benyon — the Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household — was seen leaving the property after reportedly spending around two hours inside.

As the most senior official in the royal household, the Lord Chamberlain oversees more than 1,000 staff members and acts as a key liaison between the monarch and the House of Lords. The purpose of the visit has not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, Andrew continues to face legal scrutiny. Thames Valley Police arrested him last month on suspicion of misconduct in public office, holding him for roughly 11 hours before releasing him while the investigation continues.

He has denied any wrongdoing, and the inquiry remains ongoing. Despite staying on the same Norfolk estate, reports indicate that King Charles III has not visited his brother and currently has no plans to do so, even though they are said to be only a few kilometres apart.

However, for now, attention remains on the future of Royal Lodge and what could be a notable step in King Charles III's efforts to repair family ties, even as questions remain about whether Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, would ever consider returning to a royal residence in the United Kingdom.
